Today is Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event first held on April 22, 1970. It now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. Above all, Earth Day is the "people's day" for doing something to take care of the Earth. That "something" can be local, national or global. It can be a solo action or involve a crowd.

What better day for me to remind you about one of our range of recycled and environmentally friendly text and cover papers...

Creative Print is a range of 100% recycled, uncoated text and cover materials.
The paper has an uncoated, natural surface and is produced on the "Rolls Royce" of papermaking machines - a twin wire machine which ensures even-sidedness which improves printability over other inferior products. The range is available in two shades, Diamond and Champagne and the weight range is 90, 120, 170, 210, 270 and 350gsm.

Creative Print is manufactured by Euler in Germany, which is part of the Koehler Paper Group. The range carries the "Blue Angel" certification. Introduced in 1978, the Blue Angel scheme is the oldest ecolabel in the world, and it covers some 10,000 products in some 80 product categories. After the introduction of Germany's Blue Angel in 1978 as the first worldwide environmental label, other European and non-European countries followed this example and introduced their own national and supra-regional environmental labels. The common goal of these labels is to inform consumers about environmentally friendly products thereby giving global support to product-related environmental protection - perfect for highlighting on Earth Day!
If you would like a swatch of this range, just drop me an email Justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

2021 Calendar using Creative Print

The United Nations declared 2021 as the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour. This UN International Year will provide an opportunity to address the challenges posed by COVID-19 and to accelerate progress towards the goal to end child labour in all its forms by 2025. It will also propel momentum towards the Global Conference on Child Labour that will take place in South Africa in 2022.

This calendar was conceived by the creative heads of advertising agency LMF based in Thüringen. They organised a collaboration with Quedlinburg DRUCK GmbH (printer) Koehler Greiz GmbH & Co KG (Paper) and Druckerei Erdenberger (UV print/finishing) to produce a calendar to highlight this special year.

Size of the calendar is 810x 280mm is wiro-bound at the head and has 14 leaves, one for each month plus an introduction page and cover.

The calendar is printed on our Creative Print, Diamond 210gsm, which is a 100% Recycled paper which we launched on World Environment Day in 2019. The range also is accredited with the "Blue Angel" environmental mark - which is fact the oldest environmental ecolabel, first awarded in 1978.

The print result is absolutely superb on this 100% recycled paper - sadly what it isn't possible to show here is the range of UV print finishes, with glitter, high build, textured and matt finish - because it isn't easy to photograph - particularly not with my limited photography skills!

I have been given a number of these individual calendars for the readers of this blog. They are available on a first come first serve basis, so if you would like a copy, please email me justin@fennerpaper.co.uk ...but you'll have to hurry!

2021 Koehler Calendar

I have just received some copies of the Koehler Paper Group's 2021 calendar. Koehler make a wide variety of papers and supply us with Creative Print amongst others. Koehler pride themselves on producing an individual calendar every year, which is always produced locally and this 2021 calendar is no exception.

The calendar is produced by Selina Haas Design. Whilst a student in 2014, Selina produced a successful advertising campaign promoting the Black Forest area. After graduating from university in Freiburg, she set up her own studio, next door to her parent's cuckoo clock factory in Schonach.
The calendars are 500mm square in size and are printed on a variety of the different plain and embossed uncoated boards produced by Koehler.
The images are all compositions showing features of the Black Forest area, the trees, the animals and lots of cuckoo clocks! Printing is by Druckerei Herbstritt.
I have been given 10 of these individual calendars for the readers of this blog. They are available on a first come first serve basis, so if you would like a copy, please email me justin@fennerpaper.co.uk ...but hurry!

Creative Print Launch

Today is World Environment Day. This event is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. Above all, World Environment Day is the "people's day" for doing something to take care of the Earth. That "something" can be local, national or global. It can be a solo action or involve a crowd.
What better day for us to launch the latest addition to our range of recycled and environmentally friendly papers...

Creative Print is our new range of 100% recycled, uncoated text and cover materials.
The paper has an uncoated, natural surface and is produced on the "Rolls Royce" of papermaking machines - a twin wire machine which ensures even-sidedness which improves printability over other inferior products. Women's World Cup 2019...

Following the success of the Typographic Wallchart that we produced for the last years World Cup, we have now produced a new wallchart for an even more important event - the Women's World Cup!
This A1 size typographic wallchart is very simply produced in just two colour offset litho and is printed on our new Creative Print, Diamond 90gsm from German paper manufacturer Euler and is made using 100% recycled fibres..
To accompany the wallchart, we have produced a ready made "sweepstake kit" so that studios can easily run a sweepstake and get everyone involved - the sweepstake idea came about at the suggestion of our friends at Carter Studio - an excellent thought and our thanks to Joe and Phil.
Design of the wallchart and sweepstake kit is by David Coates, who also happens to be a member of the ISTD board (International Society of Typographic Designers) and my thanks to Dave for making it all happen - a perfect way to combine his love of type and football! Printing is by Typecast Colour in Paddock Wood.

We will be sending out some of these wallcharts in the post, but if you want to make absolutely sure you get a copy, you can email me Justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

Printweek Live!

Last week Fenner Paper had a stand at the at the PrintWeekLive! exhibition held at the Wasps Arena in Coventry. This was the inaugural event and was acclaimed as a success, with over 2,000 visitors across the two days. Visitors were attracted by combination of a show floor featuring the latest technology, workshop theatres and a conference schedule boasting several inspirational speakers.
On the Fenner Paper stand we showed all our product ranges including those from Cordenons, Favini and Koehler and many more. Fenner Paper is now the UK distributor for all the graphical ranges produced by the Reflex mill in Germany, including Zeta, Efalin, Spectral, T2000, Medley etc... all of which were displayed.
...also on our stand, we launched our new luxury direct food-contact paper from James Cropper, called Dolcelicious and we even had cakes and chocolate on the stand!

Visit to Greiz Mill

Last week, together with Mr Fenner himself (!),  I was fortunate enough to visit the mill in Germany that makes our Colorset paper. Greiz Mill is part of the Koehler group of companies which is still a family owned papermaker. The group is mainly involved with the production of thermal coated and carbonless papers, but the mill we visited specialises in producing recycled products.

Greiz is a very attractive, ancient town in Thuringia in eastern Germany, close to Leipzig and is unusual in having two castles. The mill can trace it's history back to the 1590's, with the current machine at the mill being installed in the 1960's.

You can see from the picture here, how seriously they take their recycling (and it is stacked very neatly)

...and here I am, shivering, in front of the bales of recycled fibre (see the snow on the ground!)

Mr Mallon, the Technology and Quality Manager, taking us through the various stages of the recycling process:

...and below is the picture that shows the reason that Colorset is such a well made sheet of paper. What you are looking at is a picture of a "twin-wire" paper machine, which is generally regarded as the best type of machine on which to make fine paper.
Effectively, the machine starts by making two seperate webs of paper which come together in the papermaking process making a superior, even sided sheet of paper (not to be confused with duplexing).

...and here (above) is the magic piece of equipment manufactured by Escher Wyss, called a "top former".

Here I am standing by the paper machine, which is making our Colorset Magenta, with a smile on my face knowing that our lovely coloured paper is made on a machine with a superior twin wire, while the coloured paper made for that other well known, Hull based paper merchant, is only made on a single wire machine!

I would like to thank everyone at Greiz and Koehler who made our trip very worthwhile and enjoyable.
