Happy Valentines Day!

What better day than to look at this superbly produced book, titled 'Arrows of Love'...  This superb book was originally published to accompany the Quentin Blake exhibition titled Arrows of Love which took place in 2018 at the House of Illustration. This was an exhibition of Quentin Blake’s rarely-seen nudes consisting of 18 exuberant pencil drawings depicting women avoiding or embracing Cupid’s arrow. The original works are pencil on paper and were drawn circa 1974.

Having opened on Valentine’s Day, this exhibition reveals Quentin Blake's personal reflections on the joy, folly and sorrow of love with his characteristic humour. You can read about the exhibition here.
The size of the book is 265x220mm, portrait and comprises of 64pp plus endpapers. The text pages are printed on our Omnia, Natural 120gsm which gives the book a 'toned' look but which sympathetically reproduces the pencil illustrations.

The books starts with arrows...

Modernism on Sea

The De La Warr pavilion is on the seafront in Bexhill in Sussex and is an iconic modernist building by the architects Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff which opened in 1936. Following a major renovation in 2005, the pavilion hosts many shows, exhibitions and cultural events.
This is the booklet to accompany a talk titled 'Modernism on Sea' given by Stewart Drew, who is the current Director and CEO of the pavilion and who has overseen the recent development and transformation of  the Pavilion. The booklet documents the original concept for the building, the history, construction and events throughout the decades.

Size of the booklet is A6 (148x105mm) portrait and is saddle stitched. It is a 16pp self cover printed on Omnia Natural 120gsm.
The publication is digitally printed by Typecast Colour, based in Paddock Wood, Kent. It was printed on their Xerox digital press and the result is excellent. The great thing is the job just doesn't look and feel like a digital job, which is mainly down to the choice of substrate.

The 16pp, saddle stitched format, sits nice and flat.

The publication is designed by Playne Design who have studios in London and Hastings. Creative Director is Clare Playne with production handled by Simon Hack. Print is by Typecast.

Abram Games, Designs with Type

Abram Games is acknowledged as being one of the 20th Century's greatest image makers, his work is now a fascinating record of social history. For over 60 years he produced some of Britain’s most memorable images including the war years as Official War Poster Artist producing over one hundred posters. He was the designer of the Festival of Britain emblem and his clients included the United Nations, London Transport, British Airways, Shell, the Financial Times, Guinness and of course book jackets for Penguin books. He also created the first animated BBC on-screen ident in 1953.

This small booklet was designed to accompany a talk by his daughter, Naomi Games, to the Wynkyn de Worde society.
The size of the publication is A6 (148x105mm) portrait and is saddle stitched. It is a 16pp self cover and is digitally printed (HP Indigo) on our Omnia Natural 120gsm.

The work in this booklet is a combination of his work before WW2, during WW2 (as the only official War Poster Artist) and his work in peacetime.

It's also just worth pointing out that the work of Abram Games, along with many other pioneering Jewish émigré designers is being shown in the 'Designs on Britain' exhibition at the Jewish Museum in London until  15th April

Caramel Spring/Summer 17

Eva Karayiannis, founded Caramel in 1999. Originally from Greece, she came to London to study the history of Art at Sotheby's, eventually establishing a business selling and ultimately designing children's clothes. Caramel is known for its fresh silhouettes, distinctive colour ways and intricate attention to detail.

This is the look-book for the Spring Sumer collection. The format is a very simple 16pp broadsheet, which opens easily to read and displays a large poster type area, when fully open.
Size is 594mm x 420mm  folding to 210x148mm. The birds eye view below should give you the best idea of the format and the way it works.
The paper chosen is our Omnia Natural 120gsm because it would work with the intricate detail that is present in the images but that would give a natural look and tactile feel. It is printed offset litho in four colour process (CMYK) and as you can see from images, some of the images have dark areas, but there is no loss of detail, which is what can often happen printing on an uncoated paper. The neutral shade of the Omnia Natural works just right with these images.

The below image demonstrates the amount of detail that is retained in the shirt and the vibrant colours.
Art direction and design is by the in-house studio at Caramel based in London.  Printing is by Gemini Print, based in Brighton.
