New A4 sample service launches today!

Very exciting news today!

Some readers of this blog may not even remember the humble Fax machine, but for many years they sat in the corner of the offices and studios of the land, humming away and allowing us to receive communications across the miles, before the internet...
So why am I telling you about these outdated office machines? Well, with the recent updating of the  UK broadband network, increased bandwidth and faster speeds, technology company Looflir PA has developed a program which enables paper samples to be delivered directly via the fax machine to your studio. Not only does this mean you can get your samples straight away, it also saves the environment as we will no longer have to send A4 samples by post or courier...
So now is the time to look out for those old fax machines in store cupboards and under desks and get them plugged in! And the good news is that even though Fenner Paper is the one that partnered with Looflir PA to pioneer this new concept, the new technology will be rolled out to the rest of the industry including other paper merchants and paper mills, which will make receiving samples from other parts of the world much easier.
Above is a sheet of our Colorset 100% Recycled, Bright Red 270gsm arriving on a Samsung machine during testing. Please note that there is a limit to the weights that can be sent and currently we are unable to send anything 1mm or over, so sadly we cannot send our SUMO range.

To sign up for the new service, please email samples@fennerpaper.co.uk and we will send you the relevant information and the download procedure.

April Fool from the past...

Given the current Corona shutdown situation, I don't think many people are in the mood for an April Fool joke. However, regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by.

So I thought I'd let you see an April Fool that I posted back in 2011, which had many people fooled...

Royal Wedding beckons!

This morning, I can reveal that I've been invited to the Royal Wedding on 29th April - how exciting is that!
...and as you can see below, I've already been for my morning suit and hat fitting (in the Fenner Paper van!
Sadly, it's not because I have "blue blood" running through my veins, it's strictly a work related reason....
Most readers of this blog know that many people call me for recommendations about what materials to use, so I'm used to speaking to a wide range of people but even I was surprised when I received a call from Buckingham Palace!  Flight Lieutenant "Loof" Lirpa, the Prince's secretary and assistant, introduced himself by saying that I'd come highly recommended and he'd even checked out this very blog!

Due to security protocols, I can't reveal too much (or in fact anything) about the materials or processes used, or even the printer who did the job, so this isn't going to be a particularly revealing post - although I can say it's printed on a very white board.

As part of William and Kate's outreach programme, they wanted to invite some "ordinary" people and where better to start than some of the "tradespeople" who have been involved in all apects of the wedding and I was lucky enough to be one of the chosen ones.
Needless to say, I shall be checking out the paper used for the order of service sheets on the actual day!
Lady in waiting, Rt Hon. A.P. Rilf-Ool, sending out the invitations
...all I have to do now is remember the date!

Parliamentary Select Committee

I can now report that yesterday I was privileged to have appeared before MP's at the Houses of Parliament before a  sub-committee for Culture Media and Sport.

The committee wanted to hear from people in the industry about the effect of digital communications on the paper industry and I was invited because I'm on the board of  the Alliance for Paper Related Industry Legislation (APRIL).

It was an interesting and somewhat overwhelming experience but nevertheless, a great honour.

The hearing was chaired by Flora Pilo, the Welsh MP for Rialofpol and below is the official picture - I'm the one on the far right with my left hand up (...had to be an official photo as "selfies" aren't allowed!)
I appeared alongside Joe Kerr, the Managing Director of print company Polar Foil and Haime Jester, consultant from paper industry research specialists Head Heaven Buoy (HHB)

As this is only a minor sub-committee, the notes in Hansard (parliament's own publishing house) will not appear until later in the month and I'm not permitted to discuss the hearing until publication, but the report being compiled by online editors, Opal Firlo, should make for interesting reading - I'll let you know when it's published.

April Fools...

As usual, there were some great April Fool's day gags around this year. John Dowling of Dowling Duncan forwarded the below spoof Creative Review article claiming that the use of non approved typefaces would be subject to a government charge in order to reduce the budget deficit.  It's a great piece of work and I particularly like the line "most of the regeneration of Shoreditch is built on the use of Helvetica"!
...and thanks to all those who wished me well on my invitation for the Royal Wedding, especially Pali at Johnson Banks who was first to spot it. I take my hat off to you all!
