Justin is a papermaker, as well!

I was going through some stuff last night and found this picture. It's a Polaroid (remember them?!) of me making paper by hand ...back in 1997!

For those unfamiliar with the process, I have dipped my frame which has a wire mesh over it, into the stock (pulp fibres in water) and am attemting to shake it to evenly spread the fibres. I recall this wasn't too successful as I ended up with a sheet of paper that was about 400gsm one end and about 60gsm the other - but you can't say I didn't give it a shot!

This was taken at the old Stora Papyrus Gryksbo mill in Sweden in their hand-made paper studio.

Heart

Many of you will probably have already received this lovely set of promotional pieces from illustration agency HEART. They have produced this series of A4 concertina folded items to

promote illustrators such as Ben Kirchner, Barry Falls and Nick White, both in the UK and USA.

They are all printed on StarFine White 240gsm. Illustration is not always the easiest thing to get right, printing on uncoated materials, but if you've seen these, I think you'll agree, they are really well produced.

Roksanda Ilincic for Whistles

This is a lovely mailing piece from fashion retailer Whistles.

It is A5 size and the pages are formed by a long perforated concertina which fold into the cover. Printed on Omnia 280gsm.

It is designed "in house" at Whistles by designer Jess Hilton and photography is by Ben Weller.

....and thank you for the flowery note from Jess and Kate which is hand illustrated!

The Birds by Paul Farrell

Thank you to Paul for sending me this lovely new collection of cards, all using our Colorset recycled board.

They are not printed (in the traditional sense) but all foiled using coloured foils - this is very interesting as few jobs I see involve printing colour on colour (as I guess designers can be unsure of the outcome) let alone colour foil on colour material.

As part of the London Design Festival, Paul has an exhibition at The Old Sweetshop Gallery (in SW18) which runs until 27th September.

Hero - Issue1

Here is a new zine which is aimed at bringing fresh new international model talent to the fashion world - "THE FACES OF TOMORROW'S FASHION"

Designed, edited and published by James West & Fabien Kruszelnicki. The list of photographers is too long to list unfortunately but there are some really superb images in this job.

And here's for the boring bit ...it is 210x275mm, portrait, perfect bound with a 4pp cover and 98pp text. It is printed on our lovely uncoated StarFine White 270gsm and 115gsm.

Erika's Cards

I first met Erika when she was working at Pentagram in John Rushworth's team back in the mid nineties (I know that's quite a long time ago now!). Even though Erika returned to Sweden with her young family we have still stayed in touch and she now lives and works in Stockholm.

Below are pictures of a fantastic range of cut out letter cards which is an idea that she had years ago and she has finally produced them - and I think they're great (...they aren't even on our paper and I still think they're great!)

Packaging First for Flaxprint

This article was in the latest issue of Grafik magazine.

It describes the design and production of the perfume packaging for a new fragrance called DAPHNE.

Design is by David Hitner and Guy Marshall at Small and it describes how they worked closely with production house Nirvana CPH to create a very unique packaging.

It is of particular interest because it utilises one of Fenner Paper's more unusual products called FLAXPRINT which is a litho printable bookcloth (yes it's a genuine white bookcloth that you can litho print onto!)

Invitation

Now some people might have expected me to title this post using some crude pun (such as "Flocking Lovely Invite") but I know I am addressing a particularly sophisticated audience, so I'm sure that even my best Flocking jokes wouldn't raise a titter!

...anyway, this is a particularly beautiful wedding invitation produced on our Flockage Colours, in Bright Red 400gsm.

The inspiration for the colour of the invitation is from the colour of the hassocks (that's the name for the cushions that you kneel on in church) which are red in this particular church together with the "burlesque" themed entertainment at the reception. The Fleur de Leys device which is also used is another feature in the church.

The invitations are A5 in size and foiled in one colour using Red Metallic Foil by Benwell Sebard

Incidentally it's probably worth noting that when I spoke to Chris Allen he made the point of telling me that it was a "cost effective" use of the material. Flockage is an expensive material, but because of the small quantity and the fact that only one process was being used on it (and waste is therefore minimal) a luxury, high impact impression was achieved for relatively low cost.

Arts Council - Annual Review 2009

In the early summer I started to put together dummies in various formats for Intro for the Arts Council annual review - and last week I received the finished article ...and very nice it is too!

Size is 215x270mm Portrait. It has a 4pp cover and a 50pp text.

and now for the paper plug! ...it is printed on our lovely OMNIA 200gsm and 120gsm with a 12pp gloss section on Millennium Real Art 130gsm.

Photography is all great, as you would expect given the various arts subjects covered, but as there are 49 photography credits, I've decided not to list them!

It's printed by Seacourt (based in Oxfordshire) using waterless offset

This is a lovely self promotional piece from Neil Tinson Studio who are based in Cornwall (...so for those people that think we're Londoncentric, think again)

It is A2 size folding to A5, printed in two special colours.

It is printed on our Clervaux [1 sided] 110gsm which is uncoated but smooth one side and toothy (roughish) on the reverse. CMYK Board!

Have a look at this lovely self promotional piece for freelance designer Alex Parrott.

It's made up using 8 layers of COLORSET 270gsm (that's 2160gsm!) in CYMK colours and foiled in white.

It uses four COLORSET shades: Nero, Light Blue, Magenta and Solar.

It was produced by Downeys who have made a lovely job of duplexing the sheets and foiling in white on front and back.

It's worth making the point that although we (at Fenner Paper) don't offer a duplexing service (as another well known paper merchant based in Hull does) ...there are printers and finishers that offer this service at quite reasonable rates!

A paper mill actually opens in the UK!

I've just returned from holiday to some good news!

Now many people will have heard me say about how paper manufacturing is virtually dead in the UK (which, sadly, in many ways it is) but here is a brand spanking new paper mill which has just started production here in the UK.

Now I don't want anyone to get too excited because it won't actually affect most of us in our sector of what is generally called the "fine papers" market as this new mill only produces recycled newsprint - just tonnes and tonnes of it - (just one grade and pretty much all the same weight and certainly no sheets! ...but it does at least give us in the paper industry some good news.

For those paper geeks out there, the technical information is as follows:
It is the world's largest recycled newsprint machine. The mill is called Palm Paper, a subsidiary of Germany-based Papierfabrik Palm. The paper machine was started at its King's Lynn site in Norfolk on 21 August, 3 weeks ahead of schedule (that's the Germans for you!)
The machine, which has a net width of 10.63m, is set to produce 400,000 tonnes of newsprint – all from 100% selected recycled fibre.
