Jobs from the past - Number 168

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by - this project is from 2016.

Paul Smith - Spring/Summer 2016
The Paul Smith brand (and person) has become synonymous with classic British tailoring and style. Renowned for well-made, good quality, simple cut clothing with interesting fabrics which is easy to wear. There is often a splash of vibrant colour, a floral print or the signature multi-coloured stripes. Paul Smith now has 19 shops and concessions in the UK and 200 shops worldwide with the business still based where it was founded, in Nottingham.

This is the lookbook for the Spring Summer 2016 collection. The finished size is A5 (210x148mm) portrait and it is a 16pp 'closed double gatefold' making the flat size 210x880mm.

It is printed in CMYK offset litho on our Omnia, White FSC 280gsm and is printed and finished beautifully. Birds eye view below:
The material chosen is our Omnia 280gsm which gives it that dead matt, tactile feel but with great reproduction.

...and here's the plug for the paper!  - As you can see from these images, there is lots of colour and images with CMYK dark areas - loads of ink going down and it looks great on the Omnia, reproducing bright vibrant colours, whilst retaining detail in the dark areas (in my opinion- but I would say that wouldn't I?) See the detail in the bag image below
Although this is a simply produced publication, it's often the simple jobs which don't get the attention to detail. This is well creased and folded square which is just perfect
Creative direction and design is by the in-house design team at Paul Smith. Printing is by Leicester based Greenshires with Richard Dalby handling the project. Beautifully printed and finished - a really well produced piece.

Landmark

Landmark is a Samuel Heath collection consisting of two Bauhaus-inspired designs and this is a superb piece of literature produced to show the restrained minimalist design and to fully communicate its craftsmanship and depth of inspiration.
I cannot describe the project better than on the Sanders website..."The challenge of this project was to present the product collection in a clear and precise manner, whilst ensuring design language and ease of use remained true to the Bauhaus principles that inspired the initial sketches of the product design. The use of carmine colouring boldly compliments the pure white texture throughout and the photography used has minimal shine and shading which bequeaths an understated confidence and stays true to the industrial aesthetic established. Implementing both of these themes we stayed true to the Bauhaus brilliance used to formulate the original design"

... and this is quite true! It is one of the most beautiful and well produced pieces of literature to appear on this blog (in my opinion!)
Size of the brochure is 297x245mm, portrait and is saddle stitched with a 4pp cover and 16pp text. It is printed on our lovely Omnia 320gsm (cover) and 200gsm (text). The carmine special colour is flat, matt and tactile just like you would want it and with a real depth and intensity of colour.
As the Sanders introduction states, the design had to be simple and superbly executed and the cover is the perfect demonstration. Along the spine there is a 45mm band (front and back cover) which is printed in the Carmine and blind embossed, perfectly simulating a cloth binding tape. The result is simply stunning...
Our Omnia was chosen which gives it that dead matt, tactile feel but with great reproduction, the solids are quite simply stunning.
As you can see from the images, there is lots of colour and images with CMYK dark areas - loads of ink going down and it looks great on the Omnia, reproducing bright vibrant solids, whilst retaining detail in the dark areas (in my opinion- but I would say that wouldn't I?)
The outside back cover - with the 45mm embossing running parallel to the spine.
Creative direction and design is by Sanders Product Design & Branding and the designer on the project is Jameila Thomas. Printing is by Leicester based Greenshires with Rob Hughes handling the project. The publication is printed offset litho in CMYK plus a special red. Printing and finishing are superb - a really well produced piece.

A Suit to Travel in

The Paul Smith brand (and person) has become synonymous with classic British tailoring and style. Renowned for well-made, good quality, simple cut clothing. Paul Smith designs are renowned for a splash of vibrant colour, a floral print or the signature multi-coloured stripes but they are equally known for the fabric. A suit to travel in is 100% wool and has stretch and crease-recovery properties that mean the suit will always look good, whatever the journey.

The finished size is A5 (210x148mm) portrait and it is a 6pp gatefold folding out to a finished size of 210x441mm
Below image showing outside, spread out flat...

There is a piece of the fabric tipped in on the centre panel.
Birds eye image below showing the format...
The material chosen is our Omnia 320gsm which gives it that dead matt, tactile feel but with great reproduction, especially with the mono images and cool flat grey

You can see in the image below, how the Omnia has retained all the detail in the dark areas in the jacket...

Colefax and Fowler Collection

I've written many posts on this blog which includes the phrase "...just the cover makes the difference!" None of the previous posts can compare with the cover on this superb piece of literature.
The cover alone is quite simply stunning. It has the most amazing embossing which is present over the entire front and back cover. This fine piece of embossing just exudes quality and is a fine introduction to the wallpapers, fabrics and trimmings in the collection.
The size of the publication is 280x220mm, portrait and is saddle stitched. The 4pp cover is simply hot foil blocked in matt white foil and beautifully embossed on our Colorset Dark Grey 350gsm (which is also 100% recycled). The 20pp text is printed on 150gsm "house silk".

Hopefully you will be able to see from the images below just how crisp, detailed and deep the embossing is.
The embossing is based on one of the new collections in the Colefax and Fowler range called "Sinclair". This fabric design has been redrawn and reinterpreted to works as an embossed finish and it has translated delightfully.
The text pages certainly don't disappoint, with beautiful room settings and photography.
The below image shows the full extent of the emboss over the front and back cover.
This image below shows the cover from the inside and hopefully you can make out the depth of the embossing.
I hope I have done this piece of literature justice. Colefax and Fowler are renowned for epitomising the very best of English style. Investing in printed publications of this quality demonstrates a confidence and belief in their brand which will surely ensure their longevity.
Creative direction and production is handled in house at Colefax & Fowler. The designer on this project is Rachael Ashley. Print production, including the incredible embossing, is by Greenshires based in Leicester.
