The Marshes

Hackney Marshes are city and wilderness. They are wild and grubby, empty and teeming with rubbish and stories. 'The Marshes' brings together images by Josh Lustig and text by Samuel Wright, in an unconventional design that lets the photographs and writing interact and interweave throughout.

'The Marshes' is the first publication from Tartaruga Press. As sprawling and untamed as its subject, this is a book designed to be explored, played with, and re-read.
The size of the publication is 240 x 165mm, portrait. The 4pp cover is printed on our Flora Avorio, 240gsm, silkscreen printed. For those that aren't familiar with it, Flora is a 50% recycled paper with natural deliberately visible inclusions and fibres. The 52pp main section printed on Shiro Echo, Bright White 120gsm (our 100% recycled). Their are two smaller "insert" sections 220x145mm (1x24pp and 1x28pp) printed on Offenbach Bible 60gsm.
Somewhat surprisingly, but with amazing effectiveness, the images on the main text are all printed single colour, offset litho and the halftone reproduction of the monochromatic images is superb.
There is also a single sheet loose leaf letterpress on the Flora Avorio, 100gsm (below)
It's also worth pointing out that it's beautifully bound. It's "three hole sewn" in black thread which suits the publication perfectly.

The inset sections on the Offenbach Bible 60gsm are printed in 2 colours, black and a special green ( printed offset litho).
James Cartwright, posting on www.itsnicethat.com, writes "Beautifully printed and bound, The Marshes is a wonderful example of a work that utilises print to the very best of its capabilities, bringing writer, photographer and designer together to make something uniquely tactile and extraordinary"

Design is by Daisy Lumley. The cover was silkscreened by hand in two colours by Max Bondi. Litho printing and finishing is by Paul Martin at Jigsaw Colour. Thanks to Josh and Max for sending me file copies and for their kind note. This is their first publication (limited edition of 300 copies) and I can't wait to see the next one....

It's Nice That is 5

Last week, It's Nice That, celebrated their 5th birthday with the launch of their new site. Designed by INT Works and built by With Associates, the new site is the third generation of the It’s Nice That site.
Do have a look... www.itsnicethat.com

It was great to be invited to share in their celebrations - they asked friends, collaborators and anyone who's helped along the way, to the pub to toast their birthday. So last Thursday evening after work, a pretty sizeable gathering met up at the Barley Mow in Curtain Road to celebrate.

Not the best picture of the year, but it gives you the flavour... it was such a balmy evening, nearly everyone was outside!
Congratulations to everyone at Its Nice That, especially to Will and Alex who had that dream 5 years ago, got their heads down and stuck to it ...Happy Birthday

It's Nice That #6 - out now!

Yes, the eponymous It's Nice That #6 has hit the streets. Under the editorship of Alex Moshakis, it is packed with the usual superbly selected content featuring George Lois, Lawrence Weiner and Asger Carlsen, essays by BAFTA-award-winning animator Mikey Please and publisher David Bennewith. There's also an excellent profile on artist Keith Haring by Lucia Davies.
Issue #6 remains the same size as previous (210x275mm portrait) but has modified the materials again utilising a recycled offset for the Work section (Cyclus offest, I think) and our Marazion Ultra 90gsm for the Features/Interviews section. The cover is provided by that other paper company ( ...you know, the one based near Grimsby) with a Brocade emboss. The whole publication has a great feel about it.

The pre-order copies come with a fantastic print (pictured here) designed by artist, Andy Rementer. Size is (735x525mm) printed on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm. http://andyrementer.com/

It is now available to buy online for £10 and you have the chance to sign up for a 12-month subscription, which means you also get the exclusive prints. Print is by Push.

DesignWeek - a newsworthy event

It was announced yesterday that the publisher Centaur Media is to axe the print editions of Design Week and New Media Age.

The last editions of the magazines are expected to go on sale this week, with both titles going online-only after that.

The "death of print" has often been mooted but it seems to me that there are more and more independent magazines starting off and setting up (in print) than ever before, it's curious as to why this is and why traditional publishers such as Centaur magazines are pulling away from print. This is especially strange given the parallel that the uber succesful www.itsnicethat.com blog, having run a great blog started to put it's work "in print". I guess the thing is that people only want to read good stuff, it doesn't matter whether it's in print or on line - if content is good people will want it.

It's Nice That #5

It's Nice That has rung the changes with some changes in format and materials and is available to buy right now!
The fifth issue, appropriately named It's Nice That Issue #5 (!) has changed quite a bit with the introduction of a gloss coated section and white uncoated section (not supplied by us) together with the Redeem 100% Recycled 100gsm used on the previous editions. Sadly the cover is provided by that other paper company ( ...you know, the one based in Hull) with a Buckram emboss - but hey, we can't have it all at Fenner Paper!

This 128pp (advertising free) issue includes interviews with Erwin Wurm, Matt Pyke, Isabella Rozendaal, Wilford Barrington and Rob Ryan, as well as various features and work pieces.

It is now available to buy online for £10 and you still have the chance to sign up for a 12-month subscription, which means you also get an exclusive screen print by Letman. Print is by Push. (http://www.push-print.com/).

So there you go, not entirely a Fenner Paper piece but there's still a nice flavour!

This blog makes the top 50!

Best Blogs: Design is a chart of the most inspirational design blogs from around the world and part of the Best Blogs Network and believe it or not this very blog comes in at Number 50!
http://www.design-blogs.co.uk/blog/justins-amazing-world-at-fenner-paper/
An initial top 50 has been compiled through a set of criteria that includes design and content, Alexa and Technorati ratings, Twitter followers and curation from an expert team alongside known industry insiders.
I've checked it out and it comes as no surprise that 'It's Nice That' is the current Number 1.

Anyway, I'm flattered to be on there  ...thank you! (and thanks to Alex Parrott http://www.alexparrott.co.uk/ for letting me know I was on there!)

Future:Content

The guys at It's Nice That are very excited about the launch of their first ever one-day conference, Future:Content.  It's Nice That have always believed in doing things differently and I'm sure they'll follow this lead with Future:Content. The event looks at how people involved in design and communication engage with, define and present content across a number of platforms. It will be a chance to hear the opinions of carefully curated industry specialists on their areas of expertise.
The conference will take place at the intimate Shoreditch Studios on 10th November. Speakers include Deyan Sudjic (Design Museum), Russell Davies (Ogilvy & Mather and RIG London), Phil Clandillon & Steve Millbourne (Sony Music), Sanky (AllofUs), Francesca Panetta (The Guardian and Hackney Podcast) and Anna Gerber & Britt Iversen (Visual Editions) and more speakers to be announced soon.

If You Could Collaborate ... Private view

Wow, this has got to be the most successful Private view ever!
Yesterday evening, it was the "if you could collaborate" exhibition launch, held at the A Foundation Gallery in London E2.

The RSVP e-mail had suggested wrapping up warm and being patient as the response to invitations had been high and so it was....
I arrived at 6.30 and already the queue was about 30 deep and in another ten minutes there were at least a hundred...

Unfortunately due to the size of the gallery and the numbers, they were having to work a "one in, one out" system.

Sadly I had to get home so never actually made it into the exhibition but I spoke to a number of people on the way out and apparently it's really good, so I shall be going next week (it's on until 24th January).
It meant that I didn't get to see the catalogue which is printed on our Redeem 100% Recycled ...which according to Alex and Will is another Redeem triumph! - thanks very much for the lovely note. http://www.ifyoucould.co.uk/

Rob Ryan Screenprint

Last week I picked up my file copy of the Rob Ryan limited edition print produced for advanced subcribers of "It's Nice That 2" and it's lovely! Silkscreened in just one colour, this is a great example of the way Rob combines words and illustration which makes his work really special.

Silkscreened in one colour on our Redeem 100% Recycled 315gsm.

Don't forget you would only have received one of these if you pre-ordered your copy of It's Nice That 2 ...so if you don't want to miss out next time, don't forget to pre-order!
