Letterpress on Shiro

A few weeks ago I received an email with some pictures of a letterpress printed invitation from designer Joe Hales on our Shiro Echo, saying "thought you might like to know it prints wonderfully in metal!"
The invitations were printed at Kingston University, where they have newly cast Univers in all composition sizes. The technician who helped Joe print them is Freddy Williams.
The 99x210mm invitation is printed on our Shiro Echo, White 160gsm. The private view invite was sent out with an A2 poster which was folded to A5.
Shiro Echo, White is a natural shade recycled paper made from 100% Post Consumer Waste (PCW) and carries FSC accreditation.
Thanks to Joe for sharing.

Letting in the Light

Letting in the Light is an art exhibition which was showing earlier in the year. The exhibition set to illuminate the streets of Stratford with a series of large light boxes, featuring images of paintings, drawings, digital and mixed media work by artists including Bobby Baker, Dolly Sen, Jan Arden, Phil Baird and George Harding. Produced by Bobby Baker’s pioneering Stratford-based arts and mental health organisation Daily Life Ltd, the exhibition showcased extraordinary work made by artists with personal experience of mental health issues.

This is the promotional leaflet for the exhibition. It is A5 (210x148mm) a 6pp format but with the front flap cut short at just 99mm wide, as I hope the image below demonstrates:

The below image shows the outside and inside folded out flat.
This piece of literature is printed on Omnia 200gsm, which means that rather than feeling like the vast majority of mass produced leaflets printed on a bit of 130gsm silk or gloss, this has real character and value - it feels superb - it also works superbly with the images. Printed CMYK offset litho.
Design is by Joe Hales, who runs his studio in Dalston, East London. It is printed by the Orphans Press, based in Leominster, Herefordshire.

La Dolce Vita

This is a typographic project by student Cissy Lott-Lavigna and Rosie Werrett, second year students at Kingston University.

Joe Hales, a part time lecturer at Kingston University, suggested that they contact me as their project was an re-interpretation of a film subject in the form of a bible and he suggested our Offenbach Bible paper.

As you can see from the end result, it was entirely successful. It was produced on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm and it was printed on the in house printers at Kingston Uni.
Although only produced as a 4pp, it has been hand sewn with thread - side sewn, as I would describe it.
Cissy Lott-Lavigna's portfolio caption reads "a double page spread encapsulating the themes of Federico Fellini's film 'La Dolce Vita'. Set in post-war Rome with declining religion but a prosperous decadent society, where 'The Sweet Life' seems unobtainable. We resonated with the traits of a bible by using 60gsm Offenbach Bible paper and sewn binding."
A fantastic example of what can be achieved by using the right materials, even with a very limited budget.
