Invitation to Void

Presented as part of last year's London Design Festival, VOID is an installation by photographer Dan Tobin Smith and creative studio The Experience Machine, a multi-sensory spatial installation at Collins Music Hall, Islington.

A selection of Mozambican rubies and Zambian emeralds from their supporter Gemfields’ mines, which date back millions of years, were brought to life through photography of tiny microcosms magnified to become abstract, galaxy-like structures.

This is the beautifully produced private view invitation. Size is A5 landscape (148x210mm). The invitation face is is printed on our Colorset, Dark Grey 270gsm, heavily debossed (see above) and hot foil blocked in metallic black foil. Below, shows the detail of the hot foil blocking 

The invitation is triplexed, with the Colorset Dark Grey on the face, our Sumo Black 1.5mm in the centre and a HP Indigo printed reverse, giving an overall thickness of 2mm.

Different images from the installation were used on the reverse of the invitations, the below image shows two of the images...

Design is by Sandra Zellmer. The superlative print and finishing is by Brighton based Generation Press, who are unusual in having litho, digital, letterpress and hot-foiling all in house.

Birdwatching Map

The 2012 Graphic Design Walk, organised by Graphic Birdwatching is a combined open studio walk and design exhibition celebrating the work & practise of both local & international female creatives.

This year's walk took place over two days in September during the London Design Festival and there were 12 studios in East London who opened their doors alongside a design exhibition at the 71a space on Leonard Street.

 

When you registered to go on the walk, you were given this lovely map to navigate your way around the studios. Size of the map is 544mm x 800mm folding down to 136x200mm.


On the reverse of the map is information and work of the various studios. The map was printed and finished by Newgate Concise who sponsored the printing. The map is printed on Redeem 100% Recycled in CMYK on both sides and we sponsored the paper for the map, as we did last year.

 

The map is designed by Catherine Nippe, who is also one of the organisers of Graphic Birdwatching.

Graphic Design Walk

On Friday, the very first "graphic design walk", hosted by GraphicBirdWatching took place. The walk round East London involved 15 studios of acclaimed female designers working in the fields of typography, print-making, illustration, photography and film-making. By opening their doors, the studios allowed a unique insight into their working environments and practices.

...and over 300 maps (tickets) were sold, so the event was an amazing success. Good weather, meant that people could actually walk as well as cycle to make their way around the studios. It was a lovely day which ended up with a celebration at the base camp venue which had many installations and exhibits. I enjoyed being there and it was great to be involved.

It was a great day and congratulations to all those involved, especially Catherine Nippe, Lisa Sjukur and Joana Niemeyer.

What are you doing this Friday? ...go for a walk!

During the London Design Festival, GraphicBirdWatching is hosting an exclusive graphic design walk through East London’s graphic design studios, celebrating the work and practices of London’s female designers and I'm pleased, in our small way, to be one of the sponors.

This Friday, 23rd September, 15 studios of acclaimed designers working in the fields of typography, print-making, illustration, photography and film-making are opening their doors, allowing a unique insight into their working environments and practices. The ‘base camp’ will host special installations, exhibitions and workshops and will also be the starting and finishing point for the walk.

Visitors can buy tickets in form of a map for £5 at the ‘base camp’ on the day of the event. This detailed map allows visitors access to all the open studios as well as visiting the stalls at the ‘base camp’. In the evening all contributors and visitors are invited to celebrate with music and drinks at the base camp venue, giving everyone a chance to meet and share their experience of the day.

Anti Design Festival 2010

Now I'm probably a bit behind the times but I didn't know that there was a rival to the London Design Festival and I certainly wasn't aware that there was so much dissatisfaction with it!

The following information has been taken from the Anti Design Festival site:

Created initially as a direct response to the pretty commerciality of the London Design Festival, the festival will shift the focus from bums-on-seats to brain food, and from taste and style to experiment and risk. The festival will provide a rare space for unhindered exploration and creative opportunity, where ideas may fail as equally as succeed. At multiple venues around Redchurch Street in London’s Shoreditch area, the festival will incorporate exhibitions, installations, workshops, performances and talks in Art, Design, Product, Film, Sound, Fashion, Performance, Print and Interactive.

Events and exhibitions will be curated by the likes of Daniel Charny, Terry Jones, James Payne, Harry Malt, Stuart Semple and Neville Brody. To date, contributors include Stefan Sagmeister, Jonathan Barnbrook, Yugo Nakamura, Yomi Ayeni, and Mark Moore.

The main venue is the Londonewcastle Project Space at 28 Redchurch Street. The Royal College of Art will host a one-day intervention, as will the London College of Communication. British illustration collective Le Gun will be part of a collective show curated by Bare Bones’ Harry Malt, and at the Aubin Gallery, Stuart Semple will host the first UK show by the radical French illustration group Bazooka. The Anti Design Festival has some pretty fancy sponsors and is being supported by Taschen, Londonewcastle and Arts Council England, with additional support and contributions from USE Architects and Epson.

...anyway, the reason that I got to hear about it is that the publication produced for Goldsmith Art Writing that I was involved with (with Ken Kirton and Clare Acheson) which was printed on the SHIRO Alga Carta 90gsm, has been selected to be a part of the Anti Design Festival exhibition:
