Bally Women's S|S 2017

Bally was founded by Carl Franz Bally in the mid nineteenth century as a handmade shoemaking business which soon developed into factory production in the Swiss town of Schönenwerd. It is a brand which became internationally renowned with  shops in Montevideo Buenos Aires, Paris and London by the late 19th century.

Bally has extended its offering to include clothing, handbags and leather goods for both men and women and is now a truly global, luxury brand with retail outlets in Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Lebanon Singapore, Australia, and Turkey.

This is the latest look-book for the Spring Summer collection 2017.
The size is A4 (297x210mm) portrait and has section sewn binding with a limp cover that is printed on Brossulin Xt 360gsm. The cover is printed four colour process, offset litho, using oxidising inks together with a panel which is hot foil blocked in matt white foil - looks superb!

Here is the description about the range from the Bally website: A vision of vibrant style and bold sophistication, clothes and attitude embodying all the carefree joy of a never-ending summer day. Dazzling display of ice cream tones, shiny metals and pops of 60s ultra-colour: flared trousers and satin blouses in pink; a crushed velvet backpack and kabuki platforms in bright fuchsia; a leather shirt and mesh vest in cherry red; a gold metallic shirt and high-ankle espadrilles glistening like sweet wrappers in the light.

The 52pp text paper is printed on our Marazion Ultra 250gsm. Although this is heavier than many would use for a text paper, it really works giving this whole publication a chunky, thick feel. Marazion Ultra was chosen mainly because of it's matt flatness which would reproduce the interior images well without a glossiness which would detract from the classic look and feel of the products, whilst still reproducing the vibrant colours.

Detail (below) showing the section sewing. Because of the weight of the text paper (250gsm), it has been section sewn in 8pp sections.
Design is by the in house creative team at Bally. Designer on this project is Laura Goodwin and production was dealt with in-house. Photography is by Paul Wetherell

The superb print and production is by Orchid. Everything about this project is outstanding: printing, binding, hot foil blocking. A truly accomplished piece of design and print.

Transformation

This is a particularly nice piece of literature for an award winning architects Shepheard Epstein Hunter and showcases their work where they have redeveloped and transforned existing buildings in an imaginative and positive way.
The overall size is 215mm square with an 8pp cover and a 28pp text. However, it is put together in an interesting way as the saddle stitched text is 210mm square and it is glued into the inside back cover with freestanding spine - imitating what is often referred to as 'swiss' bound (although that is a perfect bound finishing process). This is a simple but very effective solution when well finished and has the added advantage of creating a spine where there would otherwise not be one on a saddle stitched brochure. If you click on the image above, it should enlarge and you can see what I mean.
The Omnia has taken the solid green beautifully, giving the cover a lovely tactile feel. The images and CGI renderings, all printed in CMYK work superbly as well. Cover is on Omnia 320gsm and text is on Omnia 150gsm.
Design is by London based consultancy, Found Design. Creative director is Paul Spencer. The job has been beautifully printed and finished by Orchid.

Jobs from the past - Number 36

Followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and here's one from 2004.

National Portrait Gallery - Off the Beaten Track 2004

This is the invitation to the Press View for the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery called Off the Beaten Track, celebrating three centuries of women travellers in portraits. Journeying to distant parts of the world from the 1660s to the 1960s, before the age of mass travel, these women had experiences and encounters almost unthinkable today. The exhibition brought together 60 portraits from the National Portrait Gallery's collections, alongside souvenirs, photographs and paintings made by the women on their travels.

This 'passport style' invitation is 90x125mm, portrait and is saddle stitched with black staples (very nice) and also features round corners. It has a 4pp cover on Colorset Nero 270gsm with a 4pp text on Redeem 100% Recycled 130gsm. The cover is hot foil blocked with a matt white foil & blind embossing and the text is printed in four colour process.
Above: centre spread
Detail showing the printed 'intaglio' pattern. Redeem was chosen as it has a neutral white shade with an aged look and feel.
The reply card printed on Redeem 100% Recycled 240gsm and then rubber stamped by hand.

This beautifully conceived and produced invitation was by Frost Design, London. Creative directors on the project were Matt Willey and Zoë Bather. Designer was Laura Hains.

Post Office in Pictures ...take 2!

...oops! nearly forgot. Further to my post on Friday, also in the envelope is another piece of the exhibition literature.

Size is DL (210x99mm) portrait. It is a 6pp gatefold also printed on Omnia but on 120gsm this time.

As with the invitation, the dark, rich mono images have reproduced fantastically well on Omnia - a real richness in the black areas which still retain lots and lots of detail - something that you wouldn't normally achieve on a standard uncoated paper.

As with the post below, design is by Cai and Kyn  ...and in the envelope was a lovely note from Cai.

Print is by Orchid Print.

The Post Office in Pictures

This is a really well considered invitation. The Post Office in Pictures is an exhibition showcasing iconic photographic images sourced from The Royal Mail Archive.

In 1933 Sir Stephen Tallents was appointed Public Relations Officer to the General Post Office (GPO) and so began a major project to promote the range of postal services to the British public.

One initiative was the establishment of The Post Office Magazine, intended to give a sense of shared community, camaraderie and endeavour. In order to do this, the GPO employed photographers to create beautiful, informative and often humorous photographs of the Post Office at work. While the photographic documentation of the Post Office at work in the community has continued to today, this exhibition will celebrate photographs from the BPMA collection covering the 1930s to the 1990s.

This piece of print is the invitation to the private view of the exhibition opening in Swindon.

The size is 148mm wide, 140mm high. It opens as a gatefold, left to right and with small flaps on top and bottom, creating a sense of mail/envelope, without actually being one!
It is printed on our Omnia 320gsm and the sepia coloured imagery post office red solids are litho printed out of CMYK which works really well with Omnia with it's matt flat nature - it also has a light natural tint on the inside spread which is sympathetic to the image. The printed red band on the outside has a gloss UV varnish giving the effect of a piece of packing tape - very simple and effective (and of course it's worth pointing out because UV varnish works exceptionally well on Omnia)

Design duo Cai and Kyn (who are brothers) were comissioned to design the exhibition including choosing the final photographs, all printed material and the exhibition stands/walls/furniture.

Repro, print and finishing is by Orchid Print.

Anyway the good news is that you haven't missed the exhibition itself, as it's actually opening in London at the Lumen Church Gallery (http://www.lumenurc.org.uk/) in Tavistock Place - tonight!
...and runs until 31st August - and the good news is it's free entry.

Rapha

Here is yet another superb piece of literature produced by Rapha, the specialist cyclewear brand (see previous posts).
The amazing photography is again by Ben Ingham, the style of which is now defining the Rapha printed literature (and online). Below shows front and back covers:

This publication was produced for the German market and was used as a "loose insert" in a magazine which is the reason for it being slightly more conventional than the previous pieces. It is A5 (210x148mm) portrait, saddle stitched and is a 16pp self cover format printed on our Marazion Ultra 170gsm.
Art direction and design is by Ultan Coyle working for Rapha. Repro, print and finishing is by Orchid Print.

Rapha - Spring/Summer 2010

I put last years Rapha books which were shot in Norddal in Norway on the blog a couple of months ago but this is the pair produced for this year's Spring Summer season. The two publications I show here are part of the same set, both with photography taken by Ben Ingham in the South East of Sicily in the ancient town of Siracusa.

Firstly there is the lookbook which is a 4pp cover and 48pp text. The size is 150x195mm, portrait, perfect bound, produced on our Neptune Unique SoftWhite 250gsm and 155gsm. The natural shade gives this job a really classic feel and works really well with the four colour black and whites and the muted colours.
Now the above job is paired with a slightly larger job which is produced purely as a photographic piece, all printed in CMYK black & white and it is a beautiful piece of work. It is 170x225mm Portrait, has an 8pp cover and 16pp text and is "singer sewn" with a salmon colour thread. It is also printed on Neptune Unique SoftWhite but this time all on 250gsm. The cover illustration is the title page from a 10th Century depiction of the Siege of Siracusa.
The art direction and photography on these jobs is simply stunning and really seems to convey the quality and refinement of the Rapha brand.

The designer for both jobs is Ultan Coyle working for Rapha and the superb repro, print and finishing is by Orchid Print.

Rapha in Norddal

If you are familiar with cycling brand Rapha, then you'll know that they stand for quality and as you might expect their literature is produced in an exemplary way.

I have been sent a couple of jobs printed on our paper which are just superb. The two jobs I show here are part of the same set produced in 2009.  Both jobs use photography taken by Ben Ingham in a remote part of Norway called Norddal.

Firstly there is the lookbook which is a 24pp self cover. The size is 150x195mm, portrait, saddle stitched, produced on our Neptune Unique SoftWhite 155gsm.  The natural shade gives this job a really classic feel and works really well with the four colour black and whites and the muted colours.

Now this job is paired with a slightly larger job which is produced purely as a photographic piece, all printed in CMYK black & white and what an amazing piece this is too. It is 170x225mm Portrait, has an 8pp cover and 12pp text and is "singer sewn" with a natural colour thread. It is also printed on Neptune Unique SoftWhite but this time all on 250gsm.
and so you can see an uniniterupted shot without a spine getting in the way (!)  here's a pic that's available as a download from the Rapha site:
