SUMO ...now in colours!

I'm sure many of you will remember that two years ago we launched  SUMO a heavyweight, thick board from FAVINI (from Italy, not Japan!) in black and white only. The range consists of a whopping 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm ...seriously chunky!

The range has now been extended to include a small range of colours - five new shades all available in 1mm thick and below is the new swatch:

The below image shows the massive thickness of the SUMO board.

To promote the new boards, Favini produced a promotional game called KAMIZUMO which you can see in the image below...

Below you can see the 4pp folder (produced on Sumo 3mm) with the cut out creatures.

Thread Business Cards

Thread is a studio specialising in design for a wide variety of clients from the art and cultural sector. Thread is the design studio of Michael Windsor-Ungureanu ...and these are his very simple and effective business cards.

I wrote about his new studio brochure earlier in the year but I hadn't realised that very cleverly, he printed his business cards at the same time ...very economical!

Front...

Size of the cards is 85x45mm, there are three different coloured cards, all produced on Colorset - a mix of Ash, Lemon and Deep Orange, all printed offset litho in one special pantone (PMS 072U) blue.

 

Reverse...

For those of you not familiar with Colorset, it is our range of coloured text and cover papers which is also 100% recycled and more competitively priced than some other well known brands of coloured paper! There are 26 colours including black and white

Design is by Michael Windsor-Ungureanu. Printing is by Bowmans based in Leeds

Sumo is in the news...

In the news today, Japan has named its first home-grown Sumo grand champion in almost two decades. Japanese born Sumo wrestler Kisenosato (aged 30) has been promoted to the top-most Yokozuna rank after his win in the first tournament of the year. He is the first Japanese wrestler to achieve this status since 1998. In recent years, foreign wrestlers have come to dominate the sport, so this is an important moment for Sumo and for Japan.

 

Quite coincidentally, we have just launched our latest range, called SUMO!

It is a seriously thick board, although not as heavy as the 172kgs that the new Sumo champion Kisenosato weighs!

Regular followers of this blog will know that in the middle of the month, I publish a "What is ....? post. The article covers various aspects of paper, printing and finishing in greater depth. However, many of these subjects are complex, so these posts are only intended to be a brief introduction to the topic.

What is ...the correct size for a business card?

Business cards developed from the calling card, which became an important part of 18the, 19th and 20th century social etiquette. Originally the footmen of aristocrats would present a visiting card to the servant of their prospective hosts, thereby introducing the arrival of their owners.

Today, with relatively little business correspondence (on letterhead paper) the business card is one of the most visible pieces of business communication. However regarding the size, there is convention, but no actual rules! Sizes vary internationally and obviously there are cultural norms which certain markets follow.

In the UK the accepted size for business cards is 55x85mm. In the US it is based around 2inches x 3.5inches, which equates to a slightly larger 51x89mm. Other sizes around the world seem to vary from 55x90mm to 50x90mm and in Japan where the business card, called a Meishi (名刺?) has an extraordinary cultural significance, the size is 55x91mm.

I measured the card, here at the hotel in Penang, Malaysia and the size is 56x89mm ...different again!

So there you have it, no right or wrong size, just some local sizes to be aware of.
