CDG Literature

This is a new suite of literature produced for legal maritime specialist CDG. The publications are designed by Crescent Lodge who previously designed the CDG identity.

There is a main brochure and three complimentary, subsidiary publications.
Size for all publications is 260x220mm, portrait. The main brochure  is saddle stitched with a 4pp cover on Omnia 280gsm and 16pp text on Omnia 150gsm. The cover of the main brochure is hot foil blocked in metallic silver foil - no print at all. Not only does this approach highlight the foil but it's also a sensible budgetary option as it keeps the cover to just one process. The main brochure is printed offset litho.

The other three publications are all 4pp on Omnia 200gsm, printed digitally on an HP Indigo press.
The striking maritime 'mono' looking images are reproduced in three special colours, black, silver and grey which give them a depth and clarity, conveying their area of expertise in a serious and effective way.
Creative Director on the project is Lynda Brockbank and the designer is Malcolm Metcalfe. Thanks to Lynda for kindly sending me file copies.
All the publications have been printed Offset litho and digital HP Indigo by FS Moore at DG3.

Alan Fletcher Archive

© Martin Dunkerton 1992
If you aren't already aware of this, I think you'll find this pretty interesting. In the last month a new website archiving the work of Alan Fletcher has been put up. The site has been designed by Crescent Lodge and I asked Lynda Brockbank, the creative director to write a few words about the project:

The Alan Fletcher Archive website project began two years ago and was initiated by Alan’s daughter Raffaella with archivist Sarah Copplestone. The ‘soft’ launch on 31 May, was the moment when a rich mix of Alan’s work had been curated and digitised, important texts had been collected and commissioned, and the shop was ready to open. There’s still a vast collection, some of it unseen, that will continue to be added (some may yet be discovered), to build a living resource on Alan’s life, times and work. You can, of course, contact the Archive by email and also join the mailing list http://www.alanfletcherarchive.com/contact

The link to the new website is: http://www.alanfletcherarchive.com

Lynda remarked that it’s just wonderful to be able to look through all the amazing material in the archive and what a privilege it's been to work on the project.

...and I also have a small archive of my own! I have a set of ceramic desk accessories that Alan Fletcher designed for Time and Life in 1961 (bought in 2004 on the advice of a very sage Alan Dye from NB Studio ...thanks Alan)

...and I am the proud owner of a print that Alan gave me titled "a bouquet of flowers". I was at his studio one afternoon and had to rush off home as it was my anniversary that evening...
This new website is a brilliant resource and I look forward to seeing it grow and develop as more of the archive is uploaded.

CDG Brochure

This is a lovely, simple piece of literature for legal maritime specialist CDG. The brochure is designed by Crescent Lodge who had also previously designed the CDG identity a couple of years ago.
Brochure size is 260x220mm, portrait, saddle stitched. It has a 4pp cover on Omnia 280gsm and 24pp text on Omnia 150gsm.

The photography for the four section divider spreads is by Rodger Banning. I believe, he created the images by mixing oil and water (photographed on glass, I think?). Very effective.

Creative Director on the project is Lynda Brockbank and the designer is Malcolm Metcalfe.

Now this was only a short run job of 200 copies and was printed digitally on an HP Indigo press by the re-incarnated FS Moore at DG3 - see previous post... http://justinsamazingworldatfennerpaper.blogspot.com/2011/09/sad-end-for-fs-moore.html

Magnum 19|57

Now hold on to your seats! ...this could possibly be one of the best jobs of the year - and a job with a real difference!

19|57 is a new publication which represents the 19 photographers in the first part of a three part series showcasing the work of the entire Magnum collective (currently numbering 57, hence 19|57). This first book features a wide range of work from the likes of Indian photographer Raghu Rai, the powerful editorial work of Gilles Peress and iconic images by Thomas Hoepecker.
The size of the book is 120x170mm, portrait. The 8pp cover is simply hot foil blocked in matt white foil with a deboss on the reverse on Notturno 170gsm (yes that's right 170gsm - which most people consider too light for a cover but on a book this size with an 8pp cover, it's perfect). The text pages are printed on Omnia 120gsm and it is a great example of just how well Omnia prints, having said that images of this quality would look pretty good on anything!  The high bulk of Omnia gives this 96pp job a respectable 10mm spine which gives the book a nice chunky feel.

So what about this "job with a difference" that I mentioned at the start of this post, I hear you ask?  Well if you didn't notice, the pics of the spreads (pictured above) have something unusual about them, they are lying flat with perfect readovers - how come?

Well this job incorporates a new 'Layflat binding' technique. It was important for this job in particular, which is designed to work as spreads and it works - it opens completely flat and open - and it doesn't fall apart. To be honest when you see a book opening as well as this, you have to question why anyone would use conventional binding ever again!  See the pics below:
Design is by Crescent Lodge. Creative Director is Lynda Brockbank and senior designer on the project is Andrew Collier ( ...who came up with the lay flat binding idea!)

Print production, including the layflat binding, was handled by Push Print in London.

Luckily I was able to get hold of some copies of this piece and I posted out some this week (together with a new Omnia swatch), so one may pop on your doormat soon. If it doesn't arrive or you think I've missed you out and would like a copy, please drop me an e-mail and I'll see what I can do (first come, first served!)

New Review from Crescent Lodge

Every year Crescent Lodge produce a Review of projects they have done in the the previous twelve months. It demonstrates a real diversity of work ranging from their work in education, the Royal Mail, the London Philharmonic Orchestra to a private bank.

This review is printed on StarFine Natural White 150gsm and has a MirriSilver cover (in Bookjacket style).

The A5 format follows previous years and I'm lucky enough to have been involved in the past reviews, so I'm building a nice set now!

A really lovely touch is the letterpress card which goes out with the reviews which is hand printed in the studio at Crescent Lodge as they have a Letterpress machine (an Adana I think?) with and a selection of woodblock and metal type.

Design is by Lynda Brockbank (Creative Director) and Andrew Collier.
