Acacia Villas

I've written many posts on this blog which includes the phrase "...just the cover makes the difference!" The cover on this property brochure is simply stunning as it is printed on our Flockage Litho - a fab image of rich, blue feathers printed over entire front and back cover.
This brochure is for developer Martin Grant Homes and their development in Hampton, called Acacia Villas.
The brochure is A4 portrait, saddle stitched, with a 4pp cover on Flockage Litho 300gsm and 12pp text on 200gsm 'house silk'. For those of you which are not familiar with this cover product, it is a flocked paper and board which feels like a velvet material to the touch but which remarkably you can actually litho print onto! Unfortunately it is hard (actually it's impossible) to convey the fluffy/furry nature of the way this feels, but the below cover with the superbly reproduced feathers, actually feels soft, just like feathers. As you can see, it also takes hot foil blocking beautifully as well.
The inside of the cover (Flockage Litho is a one sided product) is a plain uncoated board, which has been printed offset litho in CMYK plus a gold special.
Inside text pages printed offset litho in four colour process on 'house silk' 200gsm
Last spread, showing inside back cover printed on the reverse of the Flockage Litho.
The below image shows the full extent of the all over printing on the front and back cover, plus hot foil blocking in metallic gold foil.
Try as I might to capture the "fluffiness" on camera, I just can't! ...although you can see on the image below, just what fantastic detail can be achieved by printing on the Flockage Litho.
Creative direction and design is by property branding and specialists Sectorlight, who are  based in London's docklands.

The printing and production is by Identity Print, based in Paddock Wood in Kent and the print quality on the Flockage, in particular is superb. Thanks to Nick Stacey at Identity for getting me some file copies.

Jobs from the past - Number 63

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by...

Metropolitan Hotel Brochure
2007 & 2009
This is definitely one of the most luxurious looking brochures that I have had the pleasure of being involved with over the years - it has an amazingly opulent feel which is almost entirely due to the cover.

The Metropolitan is a boutique hotel on London's Park Lane and is one of the international Como hotel group. The hotel has 144 rooms and suites and an exclusive COMO Shambhala spa and wellness centre.

The brand colour of the Metropolitan is a chocolate brown. Flockage Litho was the material chosen for the cover of the brochure to give the cover an extravagant, velvety feel.
The size of the brochure is 270x210mm, portrait. It has a 24pp text printed on a gloss paper (printer's house stock) but the cover is on Flockage Litho 300gsm. For those not familiar with Flockage, it is a flocked paper and board range with a soft feel that really does feel like velvet. The standard material is white and you can print (offset litho) onto it - either solid colour or CMYK images, no problem. The flock coating is on one side and the reverse has an uncoated finish.
Where the material used for the cover of this brochure differs is that on discussion with the printer, the flocked side was being printed in a single colour, the chocolate brand colour. Thanks to Tony Fenner's discussion with the printer about how the job was being produced, we were able to have a special making of the board produced using a self-coloured flock, it happened that there was a standard fiber colour close to the shade required ( ...this also saved money on overs and make ready sheets!)

On the outside cover, the logo is simply hot foil blocked in matt white foil, which looks beautiful.
Below are images of the text pages with beautiful photography by Martin Morrell.
The reason that the cover board needed to be the litho print quality as opposed to the Flockage Colours (which is not litho printable) is because the inside front and back covers were printed.
Above and below show the solid colour and reversed out type printed on the inside back cover.
The brochure is section sewn and has a spine thickness of 4mm.
Art direction and design is by Rashna Mody-Clark, who is a London based designer who has many years experience in editorial and print design. Print is by Matthews the Printers, based in Chingford. It was first printed in 2007 and re-printed on the same materials in 2009.

Thanks to Linda at the Metropolitan for sending me some file copies.

Renaissance of Flock!

These are some lovely invitations for the sponors reception at the British Museum for their current exhibition of Italian Renaissance Drawings.

The cropped image on the front of the invitations have been printed on Flockage Litho. For those of you which are not familiar with this product, it is a flocked paper and board which feels like a velvety material to the touch but which remarkably you can actually litho print onto!
and below are the reverse of the invites...
To give these invitations extra weight (and gravitas), they have been duplexed with another board so they actually feel around 600gsm. There are three sizes: 95x210mm, 148x148mm and 148x210mm.

Design is by Constanza Gaggero. Original drawing by Andrea del Verrocchio. Print is by Push.

...and time to hurry along to see the exhibition, it finishes on 25th July. It was well reviewed by The Guardian:

Fenner Paper even makes it to OZ!

Today I popped in to the Tourist/visitors centre in "The Rocks" in Sydney to pick up some maps and was absolutely amazed to see a range of cards printed on our material in their shop for sale!

We have supplied our Flockage Litho for this lovely range of greeting cards, called FABRIC, designed by Kelly Hyatt and published in the UK by Beaumonde Cards.

For those not familiar with Flockage Litho it is a flocked paper ...which means it made using fibres and actually has a suede/material feel to it, and incredibly, you can print conventional offset litho onto it - without loss of reproduction - you can print some really detailed stuff - in fact these cards actually have a readable bar code printed on the back!

So there you have it, 10,562 miles away from Tonbridge and I still sniffed out some of our paper!
