Zoe Williams Stationery

This is a lovely suite of stationery designed for writer and journalist Zoe Williams. The 'Z W' logo, is cleverly constructed from punctuation marks.

The stationery is hot foil blocked in gloss black foil only and has been beautifully done by IST Printing Services - based in Ayrshire - they do some lovely stuff - well worth having a look at their site: http://www.istprintingservices.co.uk/

Due to the colour pallette chosen, this stationery incorporates our lovely Colorset (100% Recycled) and a different (and much more expensive!) coloured paper stock from another paper merchant based in Hull (...guess who, guess what?) but they compliment themselves perfectly!

The clever and thoughtful design is by Maddison Graphic based in Ely.

I saw three ships come sailing by...

Here's one of the lovely pieces that I received at Christmas. Printed on Offenbach Bible 60gsm. To tie in with the ships theme, each of three ships is printed in a different colour, it is printed offset litho - and the colours are overprinted which also creates the effect of more colours.

Fenner Paper also supplied the snazzy C5 envelopes as well!

Overprinting (colour on top of another colour) was commonplace back in the days of letterpress, and when creating colours out of CMYK was very expensive. However it's a process which is rather forgotten nowadays - probably because it's nigh on impossible to create digitally and the results can only be seen on the press when it's actually being printed. Many people would wrongly assume that it's been printed silkscreen - but you wouldn't get the effect because (in general) Litho inks are transparent and silkscreen inks are opaque.

Design is by Maddison Graphic based in Ely and litho printing is by Identity in Paddock Wood in Kent.

Poly Records use Deep Orange

Here's a really simple, effective job that's clear, clean and really well produced (and I also have a point to make at the end of this post...).

These are A4+ capacity folders produced for an US record label called Poly Records. They are produced on Colorset Deep Orange 270gsm and are silkscreened in white only. 

Design is by Maddison Graphic based in Ely and silkscreening is by Screenprint Colourworks.

Now, the point I want to make is that I get many people who won't look at less than 300gsm for a folder (many people want 350gsm plus) and the biggest problem is they won't actually look and feel different materials for themseleves and often make incorrect assumptions about how it will feel. It is quite true to say that a 300gsm silk coated probably could be a bit flimsy for a folder such as this. However using uncoated materials such as Colorset (and especially Colorset which has a very high bulk) means that lighter weight can and should be considered. Colorset 270gsm has a bulk of 370microns! This also serves as a good reminder about why it is worth getting a dummy made so you can actually get the look and feel of the end job - here ends the sermon!
