The Dark Self

Shown at York St Mary's in the city of York, Susan Aldworth’s exhibition The Dark Self was inspired by her research into sleep during her three year residency at the University of York working with neuroscientist Professor Miles Whittington and art historian Professor Michael White.

This is the supporting literature, which is a single piece of paper but which folds down in a most interesting way, forming a diagonal fold.
The finished size is 210x120mm and is folded so it forms this 8pp format as you can see from the birds eye view below...
...and below shows the way the text concertina's into the folded spine.
Below shows it folded out flat.
Images showing the way that the diagonal fold works
The publication folds out to a finished size of 420x600mm (see below) which as I mentioned previously folds down to a size of 210x120mm - which actually makes a 20pp, however as the front and back cover has the fold, it's probably more accurately described as a 16pp - it's a very clever fold indeed!
Monoprint by Susan Aldworth 2017

It is printed offset litho in just two metallic colours - silver and gold, the gold only featuring on the Monoprint image above. One of our black paper ranges, Notturno 110gsm was chosen as it is a bit smoother than other black ranges and is lightweight enough (but not too light!) to perform the tricky fold. Below shows the detail of the front cover and the type in the silver which works superbly.
The literature concept and design is by Valle Walkley. Print and finishing is by Calverts.

In the Black...

Many of you may know that here at Fenner Paper we have one of the largest range of black papers and boards on the market. I wrote about our black ranges back in 2014 when we had over thirty items and we now have over forty different black stock items!
This is the new swatch which includes the latest addition to our range of blacks - BLACKGOLD. The new range of black papers is an intense, deep black. The range is produced without the use of Carbon Black pigment which makes it particularly suitable for hot foil blocking.
Below shows the detail of the new Blackgold, which is available in 120, 190, 290, 340 and 380gsm. All items are available in 720x1020mm (B1)
The surface of Blackgold has been treated to make it more fingermark resistant and more scratch resistant ...that's not to say you can't mark it, it is just more resistant than some other materials!

Blackgold joins our other black range, which we have been stocking for many years called NOTTURNO. This range is available in eleven different weights! 90, 110, 140, 170, 200, 250, 300, 350, 390, 450, 700gsm.
The swatch is about A5 size with a 30mm spine.

If you would like one of these new swatches, please get in contact with me and I shall send you one with great pleasure! justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

8 Lloyd's Avenue

I've written many posts on this blog which includes the phrase "...just the cover makes the difference!" The cover on this property brochure certainly does - it's simply a stunning piece of design with amazing hot foil blocking.
The size of the brochure is A4, portrait and has a 4pp cover with a 12pp text. The cover is hot foil blocked in metallic gold foil and white matt foil. The cover is produced on our Notturno 450gsm and the text pages printed offset litho in four colour process on 'house silk' 200gsm
For those not familiar with the Notturno range, it is a range of black papers and boards from Cordenons. The range has a wide range of substances 90, 110, 140, 170, 200, 250, 300, 350, 390, 450 and 700gsm - a pretty big range!

A lovely finishing touch is the use of brass wire stitches
Print and the superb hot foil blocking is by CPI Colour. It's worth noting that CPI have their own 'in house' foiling facilities in Croydon, including their own blockmaking.
Art direction and design is by London design studio Cre8te. Print is by CPI Colour with James Lager handling the project.

ISTD Awards Book 2014

The ISTD 2014 awards catalogue perfectly illustrates the awards, the diversity of media and approach and an inspiring overview of international typographic design.

The cover is beautifully hot foil blocked in a combination of white and gloss black foil. The size of the publication is 185x130mm, portrait and is section sewn. The 8pp cover is printed on our Notturno 300gsm (which is our black range from the Cordenons mill in Italy - 90gsm up to 700gsm).

The below picture shows the 8pp cover with the 17mm thick spine - 176pp which makes quite a chunky little book.
The hot foil blocking goes around the outside cover onto the flaps on the inside front and back covers.
The 176pp text is printed on our Omnia, White 150gsm which has reproduced fantastically - giving all the images used to show the award winners a huge amount of detail, while still making a tactile book that feels good in the hand.
It must be difficult to get an awards book like this to hold together in consistent way, showing the wide and diverse work in an interesting way, without it looking too formulaic. This book is well laid out and most readable.
Art direction and design of the awards book is by Playne Design. Designers on the project are Ade Mills, Clare Playne and Andy Scarles.

Photography for the awards book is by John Reynolds http://www.clickclickclick.net/

The excellent printing, foiling and binding is by Banbury Litho  www.banburylitho.co.uk

The awards book is now for sale "A three year snapshot of design (1 May 2011 to 4 June 2014) of work entered from around the world by designers who have used typography as an integral part of their design solution. An inspiring sourcebook of typographic excellence"
