Jobs from the past - Number 104

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and here's one from 2015.

McQ AW 2015
McQ, is the contemporary brand from Alexander McQueen which takes inspiration from street culture "evoking the varied and ever-evolving style tribes that spring up around Britain’s rich music and art scenes. Drawing on references from uniform and the military, core staples of the British wardrobe are re-imagined each season in new guises. Traditional techniques are used in contemporary ways, creating pieces that are both functional and beautiful"

Creative Director of Alexander McQueen and McQ is Sarah Burton and these fold out broadsheets were used as inserts for both the Men and Women's ranges.
The finished size of the inserts are 210x280mm, folding out to 420x280mm, as below...
…and then out to the full size of 420x560mm. Below is the Womenswear collection.
The broadsheets are printed on StarFine White 100gsm. Starfine is a quality, uncoated paper and as the images show, image reproduction is excellent. The detail of the clothing, fleshtones and on the detail images, even the fabrics is excellent - great detail for an uncoated paper, colours are bright and vivid and the solid black is superb. Menswear is below....
Produced on 100gsm, with the folds it has enough solidity to hold together well but also opens nice and flat and flows in the hand.
Design and art direction is by Rupert Smith who is a freelance art director based in London. This is an elegant and splendidly produced publication. To get these dark images to look this good on an uncoated paper is a real achievement. Print is by Rob Squires at Pureprint.

Universal Works S|S 2017

https://www.universalworks.co.uk/Universal Works produce contemporary menswear. From their beginnings working from a kitchen table in 2008, their clothing has a following and is now stocked from Los Angeles to Seoul, with three of their own shops in London and Nottingham.

I've written many posts on this blog which includes the phrase "...just the cover makes the difference!" ...and this is one of those pieces of work. The whole job is superb but the cover is really stunning.
Size of the book is 297x210mm (A4) portrait. The cover is printed offset Litho in one colour (black) on our Colorset Bright Red 270gsm (100% Recycled). The book is completely unbound, just relying on the fold on the spine holding it all together - some people see this as a brave move and designers often feel their clients won't go for it, but on some projects (such as this) it just works....

Another really interesting facet of this job is the use of our Offenbach Bible 60gsm as a completely unprinted flysheet. It beautifully layers the text and conveys an understated quality - not over the top , just a nice little addition which, being unprinted, is also particularly economical!

If you click on the image above, you'll be able to clearly see the Universal works logo showing through.

The unbound 24pp text is printed offset litho in CMYK on PhoeniXmotion Xantur 115gsm and because it is unbound, it can be mixed up, used individually and even stuck on the wall.
The below image shows the way Offenbach Bible works on the inside back cover
Outside back cover....
Design is by Nottingham based Waste Studio.  Print is by Pureprint with Rob Squires handling the project.

Creative Director of Alexander McQueen and McQ is Sarah Burton. This is the season's lookbook for women.
The size of the publication is 450x320mm, portrait and is a 12pp self cover. It is printed on our lightweight Offenbach Bible 60gsm and is a beautifully designed piece of literature.
The lookbook is printed in four colour offset litho and is a superb example of printing on Offenbach Bible - superb solid coverage and deep monochrome images reproduced in CMYK.

Due to the lightweight nature of the paper it just flops beautifully, with a bewitching feel.

Edward Green Shoes

Edward Green is a men's shoemakers founded in 1890, when Mr. Green began to make hand-crafted shoes for gentlemen in the traditional shoe making area of Northampton. The company has passed through several owners but remains owned and run by an individual, Hilary Freeman. The shoes are still craftsmen made, in Northampton using the finsest quality calf and each pair of shoes takes several weeks to make!

This is the range brochure which shows the wide range of styles available and is used for promotion to both customers and press.  The size is 155x118mm, portrait and is "singer sewn" in a green thread which matches the Edward Green brand colour. The cover is unprinted, displaying only a beautiful de-boss logo on the front (click on pics to enlarge). It has a 44pp text printed on our Marazion Ultra 135gsm which reproduces the shoes and the detail in the leather, beautifully, whilst still having a matt, tactile feel which relects the tactile nature of the calfskin. Printed in 4 colour process plus PMS 3275C.
This brochure was designed in-house by the Edward Green creative team. Print was handled by Rob Squires at Pureprint, and thanks to Rob for the file copies and the kind note.
