Ultrabold 15

This is the Spring 2014 edition of Ultrabold magazine, which is the Journal of the St Bride Library - if you aren't familiar with St. Brides, have a look at the link: http://www.sbf.org.uk/

Fenner Paper is pleased to support this publication and in a small way, help preserve the history of the printing industry for future generations.

This latest edition has some really interesting articles including one that is particularly relevant for this very date 12th September - one hundred years ago....
This article is written by Emma Langley of Phoenix Yard Books and is based on her presentation made at the St Bride Conference on book design in September 2013.

Illustrator, Stephane Barroux discovered a diary of a French soldier serving in the First World War that was being thrown away. With great ingenuity, he took the diary to his studio and illustrated the soldiers words which resulted as a striking graphic novel (titled: Line of Fire) extracts of which are shown in this article...
The last entry was 100 years ago today, 12th September 1914.

It is not known what happened to the soldier.
http://www.phoenixyardbooks.com/
http://www.barroux.info/
There are many other interesting features in the publication, including this comprehensive article written by Dave Farey in the first of a two part article about the typeface Times New Roman and The Times newspaper itself.
The publication is designed by Simon Loxley and is published by the Friends of St Brides. Printing is sponsored by Principal Colour. The journal is a 40pp self cover, 190x265mm Portrait, saddle stitched and is printed on Brand X FSC 115gsm.

The cover price is £7.00, although as I've mentioned previously on this blog, it's worth mentioning that this publication is free to friends of St Bride - so why not look into joining - might be cheaper than just buying the books and does a bit to help preserve the history of the industry for future generations.

Illustration: Making Pictures

A new conference at St Bride's has been announced called Illustration: Making Pictures on 19th June 2012.

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep" Scott Adams

Here's some information about it:
Illustration plays an integral part in many of our design processes – from interpreting the ideas of designers, to bringing to life an author’s words. Free from the constraints of a set brief, illustration can act as an outlet where creative expression can roam freely.

Mike Nicholson
We normally only see the highly polished end result in the pages of a magazine, on a billboard or a jam jar label, but for illustrators this journey starts with ideas; with scribbles and sketches, mistakes and musings.

With the advent of digital technology, we can gain more immediate insight into the story behind the pictures. Illustration can blur the boundaries across design, art, and typography and above all illustration engages, delights and inspires offering a fresh perspective to the world we live in.
There are some great speakers (see pics) coming, it should be an excellent event.

Pure Cow - Linzie Hunter

The Metal Pig - John Lawrence

Speakers include: Ben Flynn, John Lawrence, Linzie Hunter, Kai and Sunny, Nic Rawling, Peter Schrank, Helen Stephens  – more to be announced shortly.

Conference illustrator: Mike Nicholson

Demonstrators: Paul Antonio, Helen Ingham, Richard Lawrence, Peter Smith

Tickets are £85 (£70 for Friends of St Bride's members) · concessions and full-time students £60

BERG at St Bride

Following the highly successful Critical Tensions conference last November, St Bride Foundation is pleased to welcome Timo Arnall and friends to a talk about the design studio BERG.

"A growing and significant amount of design work takes place in systems, software and electronics. But these technologies are increasingly abstracted and black-boxed, so how can designers engage with these things meaningfully? How might we be involved in developing, critiquing and reflecting upon complex, opaque and invisible technologies?"

"Over the last four years BERG have produced a series of films exploring and explaining emerging technologies, building models and materials for understanding and invention.
Timo Arnall is creative director at the design studio BERG in London and a research fellow at the Oslo School of Architecture & Design. Timo has been making films, designing digital products, and researching emerging technologies for 15 years"

The lecture is on Wednesday 21 March 2012 at 7pm in the Bridewell Hall, St Bride Foundation London EC4.

The price is a very reasonable £12.00 (concessions for Students and Friends of St Bride Library available). You can book at: http://bergatstbride.eventbrite.co.uk/

PS - just an extra little note from me - if you haven't seen it, these are the guys that have developed the "Little Printer" have a look (and do watch the video!): http://bergcloud.com/littleprinter/

Ultrabold No.10

I have just received my copy of the Summer edition of Ultrabold magazine, which is the Journal of the St Bride Library - if you don't know about St. Brides - see http://www.stbride.org/
Fenner Paper is pleased to support this publication, by supplying discounted material - hopefully doing our bit to preserve the history of our industry for future generations. This edition has some really interesting articles, worth a mention.
In this issue, there is a very interesting article by David Preston, titled "Corporate Trailblazers" charting the path of a number of post war designers (as opposed to ad agencies). Designers such as FHK Henrion, Design Research Unit and Hans Schleger all come under the spotlight (spread below)
Given the "Riotous" summer that we had in the UK, there is a fascinating article about the posters and artworks that appeared during the student protests in Paris in 1968:
...and a fab article about the Stempel Schriftenservice letterpress museum and workshop in Darmstadt.
The publication is designed by Simon Loxley and is published by the Friends of St Brides.Printing is sponsored by Principal Colour. The journal is a 40pp self cover, 190x265mm Portrait, saddle stitched and is printed on Brand X FSC 135gsm.

As I've mentioned before, it's worth mentioning that this publication is free to friends of St Bride - so why not look into joining - might be cheaper than just buying the books!

Critical Tensions

You may remember my post back in August (12.08.2011) about the forthcoming St Bride's Conference but now there's a shiny new poster and  more speakers have been added including:
Tom Farrand, Tom Rowley and Dan Burgess from Good For Nothing, Amelia Gregory, Matt Jones & Matthew Webb and Jack Schulze from BERG.

...this is on top of the original line-up of speakers including Phil Baines, Jonathan Barnbrook, Zoë Bather, Alan Kitching, Gerry Leonidas, Vaughan Oliver, Paul Rennie, Lucienne Roberts, Jack Schulze, Steve Watson, Rebecca Wright and Derek Yates.
Becky Chilcott and John Walters are co-curating the conference, which is being held on the 10th and 11th November 2011 at the St Brides Institute in London.

The conference is reasonably priced, and if you are an Eye subcriber, you get a discount too. Sign up now!  http://stbride.org/events?show=criticaltensions

PS - You may also notice from the logo on the above poster that it's being sponsored by the other well known, Hull based, paper merchant ...who am I to deny them the oxygen of my publicity!

Addendum - 15.11.2011: The above poster was designed by Roger Swindale and Katy Mawhood, students at the University of Reading using Infidel by Jonathan Barnbrook / www.virusfonts.com
Apologies for missing this off the original post

St Bride's Conference 2011

Becky Chilcott and John Walters are co-curating the Friends of St Bride Tenth Annual Conference.

The theme of this year’s conference is Critical Tensions and it’s being held on the 10th and 11th November 2011.

They have a fantastic line-up of speakers including Phil Baines, Jonathan Barnbrook, Zoë Bather, Alan Kitching, Gerry Leonidas, Vaughan Oliver, Paul Rennie, Lucienne Roberts, Jack Schulze, Steve Watson, Rebecca Wright and Derek Yates with more names yet to be added.

The objective in holding events at the St. Bride Library is to raise its profile and try to maintain a very real presence in people's creative imaginations rather than it acting as a profit making exercise, so the conference is reasonably priced.

So why don't you get those little grey cells moving and sign up!

PS - I happened to notice that there are varios student discounts and concessions and the other thing is if you are an Eye subscriber you also get a discount - cool!

Forward Thinking - Conference at St Brides

Today I received a printed note from Alex Cooper and Rose Gridneff (the joint letterpress gurus!) about a conference that they are helping to organise at St Brides on 19th November.
Looks like it will be an interesting day. Have a look at  http://www.stbride.org/events?show=letterpress_1

...and thanks for the lovely note (printed on some of our lovely paper!)

Ultrabold No7

I have just received my copy of the Autumn edition of Ultrabold magazine, which is the Journal of the St Bride Library - if you don't know about St. Brides - see http://www.stbride.org/

In the past Fenner Paper have supported this publication (by supplying discounted material) although sadly this sponsorship has now come to an end. However this latest edition is certainly worth a mention.

The publication is designed by Simon Loxley and is published by the Friends of St Brides. In this issue, there is a very interesting article by Kath Tudball and Julia Woollams from Johnson Banks about the new "Save the Children" identity (spread below)
There is also a fascinating article about Yulia Brodsakya's designs using the rather forgotten art of "paper rolling" or "quilling" for The Guardian.

Print is sponsored by Principal Colour.
The journal is a 40pp self cover, 190x265mm Portrait and is printed on StarFine White 130gsm

It's worth mentioning that this publication is free to friends of St Bride - so why not look into joining - might be cheaper than just buying the books!

New Ultrabold

Have a look at this! It's the new Ultrabold magazine, which is the Journal of the St Bride Library - I know a lot of people have heard of St Brides but don't really know much about it -see http://www.stbride.org/

Anyway, we at Fenner Paper have supported this publication for the last three years (by supplying discounted material) and the print is sponsored by Principal Colour. The publication is designed by Simon Loxley and is published by the Friends of St Brides.

In this issue, there is an article about the Hand and Eye press (letterpress printer) based in London and a very interesting article about Rian Hughes' hand drawn magazine and comic lettering.

I am also very fortunate that design duo Debbie Osborne and Andrew Ross (who many of you will know) very kindly produce the Fenner advert which appears on the inside back cover. This has involved trawling the St Bride's library for suitable and diverse "F" (for Fenner) letterforms. Thank you to Andrew and Debbie for your time and generosity.

Below is a picture taken at St Brides, where Andrew Ross is "giving it some welly" on a Columbian press - trying desperately to make an impression!

If you want your own copy, simply join the Friends of St Brides and you'll get one free. Alternatively you could e-mail me and I may be able to find a file copy...
