Oxford Mathematics - Notebooks

William Joseph were commissioned to create a world-facing identity for the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford. Their solution was to use Sir Roger Penrose’s P3 tiling to form the basis of an identity that can be applied flexibly across different materials.
One of the items that the identity was applied to is this neat little set of notebooks.

The notebooks are A5, portrait and are simply printed offset litho in a silver special only (1 colour) on the cover and 'bellyband'.

The use of the silver is amazingly effective:
The cover of the notebooks are printed on our Colorset 100% Recycled 120gsm and the colours used are Spring Green, Solar and Flint.

Each of the notebooks has an 8pp cover, which is on the 120gsm. Combined with the 64pp text which is unprinted on our Shiro Echo, White 80gsm, they have a wonderfully unstructured feel which means they flow beautifully but don't feel flimsy.
...they flow

Mapping Progress

http://www.bioregional.com/Bioregional was founded in 1994 by Sue Riddlestone and Pooran Desai, two environmental activists and campaigners based in Sutton, South London who were keen to found practical green and sustainable initiatives. From small beginnings it has grown into an organisation which has founded several green enterprises, influences the sustainability of many thousands of new homes and works with global businesses to make their operations and strategy more sustainable.

This publication is their 2015-2016 annual review, titled "Mapping Progress"

The finished size is 295x170mm, and it is a broadsheet format folding out to a flat size of 850x590mm. It folds down to reveal the below...
...and then it concertina's out as you can see in the image below:
As one might expect from and environmental organisation, there are sustainable facets to the production of this report. To start with, it is printed on our Redeem 100% Recycled 100gsm. The paper is a neutral white shade which really works with the images whilst also giving a 'nod' to the look and feel of a map, reproduced one side. It is printed offset litho and the whole job is just printed on one sheet of paper, with no binding, making this about as environmentally friendly (from a production point of view) as you can get.

Below are the images showing the flat size on both sides:

...and thank you to Julia Hawkins at Bioregional for sending me copies of the report and the lovely note!

Egypt Revealed

Here's a particularly lovely publication produced for the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The Ashmolean has the distinction of being Britain's first public museum and is home to the University of Oxford's collection of Art and Archeology. This piece of literature is to showcase the forthcoming Egyptian galleries.
It is a A4 portrait, saddle stitched, job with a 4pp cover and 20pp text. Although in many ways this is a conventional format (A4 portrait), the simply executed cover is a real feature of the piece. Printed on our Colorset Ash 270gsm in just single colour (monotone) black and hot foil blocked with a matt white foil. Simplicity itself but it really sets the tone of the publication. The text is printed CMYK on a standard coated 150gsm silk.

Design is by London based design company William Joseph and the creative director on the project is Stéphane Harrison.
