PEACE – Anthony Burrill for War Child

The Private Press have collaborated with Anthony Burrill to produce a poster to raise funds for War Child UK. The first two print runs sold out, selling 250 so far meaning they have raised £12,500 for War Child.
Due to overwhelming demand they are now printing another 100 prints and they will be posted in the first week of April. 100% of sales of this print go directly to charity.

In the last week more than 1 million people have fled across the Ukrainian border with many more expected to come. War Child have been quick to respond – their teams are already on the ground working to understand the impact in children and get them vital aid and psychological care – fast. From 1 March – 31 May 2022, War Child are running their ‘Unlock a Generation’ appeal in which donations will be matched pound for pound by the UK Government. 

This means the purchase of a print right now could go twice as far. Your donation will help support the unfolding crisis in Ukraine, as well as places like Afghanistan, and match funding from the UK government will go towards Yemen, where millions of children are still in desperate need of protection from war and conflict. 

The print measures 50x70cm and is signed by Anthony in an open edition, and features black ink printed by hand onto Shiro Echo, White 250gsm a 100% recycled paper.

Change Everything

This show titled Change Everything, presents contemporary artists advocating for change through protest, and highlights the power of art in documenting and driving our future. Co-curated by Anthony Burrill and the depot_ in Shoreditch, the exhibition brings together artists, collectives and makers who are instigating social change through their work.
Following a pertinent year of worldwide upheaval and political unrest, the works shown encapsulate the ability of protest art to shift the narrative and capture the potential of a collective moment. Working with charity partner Music Declares Emergency, and incorporating a month-long events programme, the exhibition hopes to itself become a catalyst for change and conversation.
The exhibition exhibits original, limited editioned, new and archived works in textile, prints and photography. All works are for sale and parts of profits are donated to charity partner Music Declares Emergency, alongside other charities where relevant. 

The Private view was yesterday evening 
It was great to venture out and about to what was my first foray to a private view since the Covid crisis.
 
The artists collaborators and charity partners are as follows: Anthony Burrill,  Aida Wilde,  Brunel Johnson,  Fraser Muggeridge, Jeremy Deller, Joe Kibria, Kate Harrison, Music Declares Emergency,  Paris 68 Redux, People Dem Collective, Projections on Walls, Sarah Boris, Sarah-Joy Ford, Theo Hersey and Wired Magazine.
Pictured above are the A1 size prints by Anthony Burrill, which are silkscreen printed by Harvey Lloyd Screens on our Redeem 100% Recycled 80gsm, which looks and feels just right.

One of a Kind

TEENAGE CANCER TRUST IS PROUD TO PRESENT “ONE OF A KIND”, AN EXCLUSIVE EXHIBITION CELEBRATING MUSIC THROUGH ART, CURATED BY TOM HINGSTON.

2020 would have been the 20th Anniversary of Teenage Cancer Trust’s Royal Albert Hall shows – a week long initiative bringing musicians and fans together once a year, to host show stopping performances and raise money for the support and care of young people going through treatment. To mark this milestone, now a year on, ONE OF A KIND brings together 21 artworks from 21 designers, artists and musicians - screen printed, signed and open for auction. This unique collection of works will be exhibited at the Maddox Gallery, Westbourne Grove, W2 from Friday 23rd to Saturday 31st July, with bidding opening yesterday on Thursday 22nd July 2021.
All 21 artworks are silkscreen printed by Bermondsey based Screen-printer K2. All are printed on paper donated by Fenner Paper or our Hull based friends at GF Smith. The below artworks are those printed on paper supplied by Fenner Paper...

Design Interview 1Q

One of the good things to come out of the Covid-19 lockdown...

Design Interview 1Q is a You Tube channel set up by Fabio Mario Rizzotti to generate content to share with all of us trapped in the current lockdown situation. While the world has stopped Mario has been busier than ever with a series of online interviews about design. He has interviewed some great people, exploring their philosophies and thoughts - not just a showcase of that interviewee and their work but a much deeper and more insightful discussion.

Each interview is based on 10 questions with topics like the essence of design, the role of the designer in the future, the design process, design education,  the impact of the internet and many other subjects.

It's been very well received and recommended by many people I've spoken to and you should check it out. Mario has conducted 28 interviews to date including Studio Dumbar, Adrian Shaughnessy, Steven Heller, Paula Scher, Karel Martens, Studio MUT, Studio LaTigre, Erik Brandt, Niklaus Troxler, Anthony Burrill, Marion Deuchars, Michael Bierut, Dafi Kühne, Nikki Gonnissen to name a few. 

It's a wonderful initiative and it's great that it has been supported by so many well known, and some not so well known, design personalities.

Harvey Lloyd - new prints, new shop...

Harvey Lloyd Screenprint is a silkscreen print studio based in the South East of England and their work has appeared on this blog many times over the years. Established 40 years ago, they produce work for some of the best names in the industry, Anthony Burrill, Mr Bingo, Spin Design, Pentagram, Tom Pigeon, Morag Myerscough, Adrian Johnson to name a few. Harvey Lloyd have gained a reputation for having artists at their studio (often with film crews) and working together to produce their images. By working interactively, they find different techniques which are developed collaboratively.

...and now, for the first time, Harvey Lloyd Screenprint have produced a series of their own prints:
Bale (pictured above and below) is produced in 3 colour ways - Fluorescent Pink, Green and yellow. The finished size is 600mm x 600mm.
The series Connect, Metropolis and Pyramid are all 400mm square

Spheres and Weave are A2 size and printed using 3 colours using an unusual technique- getting away from digital technology and back to analogue, a technique which Steve Fachiri and Tracey Day at Harvey Lloyd don't want to reveal, save telling me that the screens were created using torn paper for the stencils.

...and of course I should have mentioned that they are all printed on our wonderful Matrisse 250gsm, which is an uncoated, white board range with a high bulk (330microns) is FSC certified and Acid Free.

HUMAN \

Graphic artist, print-maker and designer Anthony Burrill, has paired with Rosie GarcÍa founder of HUMAN \ to create these original and limited edition letterpress prints.
The HUMAN TOGETHER, TOGETHER HUMAN prints are an exclusive run with 100% of the profit going to Young Minds Mental Health Charity.

In 2017 Rosie GarcÍa founded HUMAN \ to promote the conversation around Mental Health Awareness. HUMAN \ works with artists to create limited edition pieces and bespoke garments, while donating part of every sale to Young Minds Mental Health Charity.
Anthony has made a reputation in the design world by using bold text-based compositions to convey meaningful and persuasive messaging. Having met in 2018 while working on another project to raise money for Shelter, the pair struck up a friendship.
Anthony spent a day guiding Rosie through the process and precision of letterpress printing at the well-known Adam’s of Rye, along with Ian and Derek who set and printed the wood type prints using traditional letterpress techniques.

The prints are printed onto our new shade, Colorset Blush 270gsm and they look superb...

Multiplicity in Brighton


Yesterday evening, we were pleased to be the sponsor of  Multiplicity in Brighton. Hosted by Foilco, this is the third event hosted by Foilco, with the previous talks having been in Glasgow and Leeds. Just over 150 creatives came together at The Old Market in Hove to hear three great speakers.
The three fantastic speakers were Hamish Makgill, Anthony Burrill and Andy Stevens from GTF.

Hamish began the evening. His talk began by likening the amazingly simple concept and design of the JEEP to the work that they strive to achieve at his studio by "stripping away the unnecessary and drawing out the essential"
Hamish then spoke about his work for The It's Nice That 2014 Annual, Nike WE, ONCA, James Reade, the WW Chair and of course his work for that other well known paper merchant based in Hull!
 
Next up was Andy Stevens, one of the founders of Graphic Thought Facility (GTF). He spoke about their beginnings at the RCA and how they established the studio, including spending the money they won as a prize on a poster ...see below image:
Anthony Burrill gave us an insight into his beginnings at college and then at the RCA. He spoke about his years in the advertising industry and it's rather abrupt end when he made the decision that he wanted a change telling his agent not to look for new work - and how everything, including his existing work, just stopped! He then described his journey establishing himself as an independent graphic artist, print-maker and designer.
It was a great event and everyone I spoke to came away feeling enthused and charged.

Even I said a very few words at the beginning of the evening....
Afterwards may of us went to the bar until kicking out time!

Multiplicity - Brighton

Print Club London at Somerset House

On a beautiful sunny day last week, I visited a studio in Somerset House whilst watching all the kids having a  good time splashing about in the 55 fountains that make it one of the coolest places in town, I spied an exhibition that was on by Print Club.

Dalston based silkscreen studio, Print Club London collaborated with Film 4 to curate a screen print poster exhibition in the newly opened West Wing Galleries. The exhibition shows 16 new silkscreen prints by illustrators from the UK, Europe and USA. Each print is inspired by each of the films screened this year by Film 4 in the courtyard at Somerset House .

I took some pics of the show. All the prints have been produced in limited editions of 200, signed by the artist and are available to buy at £40 each.
