De Worde

This is a type sample booklet for a brand new typeface by type designer, Jeremy Tankard. Designed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Wynkyn de Worde Society, the De Worde typeface takes inspiration from the italic that the printer publisher Wynkyn de Worde used. He was the first to introduce this letter style to English publishing with his printing of Lucian’s ‘Complures dialogi’ of 1528.
Size of the publication is 255x150mm, portrait and is three hole sewn, in keeping with a style of binding that would have been familiar even in the 16th century ...before the invention of staples!
The cover is printed on our brand new Remake (Smoke) 250gsm from Favini. It is a mid grey with a subtle fleck. Remake is made from the discarded residue of the leather manufacturing process and is a revolutionary example of ‘upcycling’. This unique and innovative paper replaces 25% of wood tree pulp with leather residues.
The text pages are printed on another Favini product called Shiro Echo, white 120gsm which is a 100% recycled range. It has a 'neutral' white shade which is perfect for the reproduction of type.
Below shows the centre spread with the red thread on the three hole sewing.
Detail showing the binding.
Text is printed two colours, red and black throughout, including the fabulous solid red spreads.  Printed offset litho throughout.
The cover is printed offset litho and hot foil blocked in white and red.
Design is by Alistair Hall at We Made This. Printing is by Typecast based in Paddock Wood in Kent and the hot foil blocking is by Benwells.

Linklaters Invitation

This is one of the most stupendous invitations to have appeared on this blog! The event is the Capital Markets Reception hosted by the legal firm Linklaters this month. The reception was held in the glamorous surroundings of the Claridge's Ballroom.

Titled with Shakespeare's erudite words "All the World's a Stage", the invitation is a genuinely theatrical production...
The invitation is a two part production - an invitation in a pocket. The finished size of the invite is A5 (210x148mm) with the black inner cards being 206x144mm, so they slip in nice and easily.
The red slipcase is produced using our Flockage Bright Red 400gsm, perfectly replicating red velvet theatre curtains. The inner invitation is on Colorplan Ebony 540gsm ( ...from the other well known, Hull based paper merchant!).
For those of you which are not familiar with this product, it is a flocked board which feels like a velvety cloth/material to the touch but which remarkably you can actually "flatten" the pile by use of a  "heat de-boss". In this case the shape of the curtains is not printed, it is "heat de-bossed" which creates the effect below:
...and it is then hot foil blocked in gold metallic foil - just look at the details on the tassels.
Below is a detail of the reverse of the slipcase, which shows what is described as the "nap" which is the pile found on velvet - just like the curtains in a theatre!
Concept and design is by GM Toucari, a London based legal communications agency. Project director is Gary Clark.

The superb execution of the project is by Benwells. They produced all the foiling and finishing - all of which is superlative. Paul Haslam at Benwells oversaw the project and thanks to Paul for sending me the samples

Shakespeare Schools Festival

The Shakespeare Schools Festival is the UK's largest youth drama festival, offering students from all backgrounds the opportunity to perform Shakespeare on their local professional stage. Alistair Hall and his Clerkenwell studio 'We Made This' was commissioned to create a promotional pack of exercise cards to send out to schools. The brief was "to challenge, support and inspire teachers to inject some SSF style creativity into their classrooms"

They created a stunning box set of hot foil-blocked cards featuring quotes from Shakespeare's plays.
This size of the box (outside dimensions) is 160x222mm and the depth of the box is 16mm. The box is a two piece 'tray and lid'. The cards are all A5 (148x210mm), hot foil blocked and 'round cornered'
The cards are printed on our Colorset Light Grey, 350gsm (above) which is 100% recycled and the natural kraft colour below is printed on our Plexus 350gsm (below)

The quotes are set in bold, engaging lettering on the fronts of each card and are beautifully hot foil blocked ...just look at the image below:
Alistair says "the client's response was - They are beautiful! Thank you so much, I couldn't be more pleased" and it was lovely to have that passed on and to receive a file copy and his kind note
The superb execution of the project is by Benwells. They produced all the print, foiling and finishing of the cards - all of which is superlative. Paul Haslam at Benwells oversaw the project.

The exquisite boxes are produced by W. MacCarthy & Sons Ltd, who are based in Woolwich in South London.

This project is a truly outstanding piece of design, typography and print.

Working The Land

This is a striking looking invitation for an exhibition held last year. Emerging Architects is a series of events run by Buro Happold to promote and expose the work of some of the world’s most imaginative and engaging new architects. This exhibition, Working The Land, showcases the work of Haptic Architects.

Haptic, says, “Working the Land’ presents some of the recent work of Haptic through a variety of mediums; from traditional architectural images and drawings to an interactive installation entitled “Light Touch”. The exhibition provides an insight into Haptic’s ethos, to work carefully and strategically with the site context, whilst focusing on materiality and craftsmanship.”
The invitation is 285mm square and is printed in two pantone colours, green and grey. It is further complimented by the wonderful deep embossing...
It is printed on our Matrisse 350gsm, which has a high bulk and is ideal for embossing as it gives a perfectly crisp embossed finish

HAPTIC

I've just received printed samples of this superb identity project for architects, Haptic.
Rules have been used to create letterforms (see above) which have then been translated into a fantastic emboss and deboss for the business cards, pictured below.

The effect on the business cards is created using a multi-level die which embosses and debosses in the same pass on the machine. Fantastically simple and amazingly effective - nothing more to be said!
Materials used are Matrisse Cotton 110gsm for the letterhead and Matrisse 320gsm for the business card.

Design is by BOB Design in London. Creative Director is Mireille Burkhardt.

Print and embossing is by Benwells in London.
