Jobs from the past - Number 144

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by...

Heart of Glass - November 2002
This is the private view invitation for an exhibition at the Crafts Council Gallery in London. The invitation is the the opening of an exhibition titled Heart of Glass, featuring work of the artists Jean-Michel Othoniel, Tony Oursler, Katy Schimert, Kiki Smith, Jan Vercruysse, Not Vital and Robin Winters.

The size of the invitation is A5 (148 x 210mm) Landscape and is silkscreen printed on one side in one colour (red). The viewing apertures are die-cut, providing eyeholes to look through which is really effective.
The invite is printed on our Kemikal, Cotton White 1500mics which is a natural feeling, neutral white thick board - 1.5mm thick. so it gives great thickness, although it isn't as dense as other thick material that we do such as Monoblack. As you can see from the image below, the thickness makes this invitation work fantastically.
Design is by Andrew Collier, who works freelance in London.

As I recall the silkscreen printing was produced by Artomatic, who also ran a print boutique in Great Sutton Street EC1. Sadly they are no loger in existence. I wrote about Artomatic on this previous post here: http://justinsamazingworldatfennerpaper.blogspot.co.uk/2009/07/job-from-past.html

From Babies with love

From Babies with Love supply organic baby clothes and printed cards by post, they then send all of their profits around the world to help abandoned and orphaned children.

The identity has been created by Paul Belford Ltd and has been applied across a range of collateral, including print. The design and illustrations reference postal ephemera, building on the postmark identity.

Business cards are 85x55mm
...and the swing tags are 135x55mm
The cards and swing tags are printed on our Kemikal, Cotton White 1500mics which is a natural feeling, neutral white thick board - 1.5mm thick. so it gives great thickness, but is nice and tactile.

The swing tags are beautifully finished, with punched holes, hole protectors and coloured string.
The below image highlights just how thick the material is:
Now you might think that being this thick, that they were silkscreen printed, however they are not, as beautifully crisp type was required juxtaposing with the smudged rough and ready 'postage mark'. So you might be surprised to learn that they have been litho printed! ...how come? I hear you ask, on a board that is 1.5mm thick. Well, they have been produced using a litho, flat bed printing press. These are machines which (in years gone by) used to be used to produce proofs (and progressive proofs, if you remember them) and because the printing bed is flat and not round a cylinder, the machines can cope with thicker substances, such as this. These cards were produced by Linnetts Proofing based in London NW10.

Design is by Paul Belford, Martin Brown and Bethan Jones at Paul Belford Ltd. You can read more about the project here: http://paulbelford.com/project/from-babies-with-love-brand/

There are other parts to the project printed on our Shiro Echo, White, including stationery paper and compliments slips and greeting cards, but maybe I'll write about those another time.

The Letterpress Collective

I've just been emailed with a pic of a lovely job printed on our board, which I want to share with you. It's been printed two colour letterpress on our Kemikal Cotton White 1500mics (...yes that's right, it one and a half millimetres thick!)

It's a wedding invitation and it's been printed letterpress at Bristol's newest (and only) letterpress print workshop called 'The Letterpress Collective'

This new workshop started last year after the last letterpress printer in Bristol quietly closed it's doors, without anyone really noticing. Well someone noticed! ...as a small group of enthusiasts collected machinery, including a Heidelberg Windmill Platen, a Stephenson Blake proofing press, various Adana's together with a collection wood and lead type. Put this all together with a lovely workspace and experienced compositors and printers and you have a thriving environment for creativity - and education, as they run courses as well!

Do have a look at their site:

The Letterpress Collective, Studio 31 Centrespace, 6 Leonard Lane, Bristol BS1 1EA

This invitation is designed by Tony Cresswell (...who's wedding it is!) and produced by Nick Hand, who is one of the founding members and keen letterpress printer.

...and if you're interested to see a sample of the Kemikal, Cotton White 1500mic, just drop me a line and ask for a sample.
