Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this publication is from only a few years ago in 2017.

The Print Shop - 40 Years of Calverts

Calverts is a workers' cooperative with a history of creating and producing eye-catching print and design. To celebrate Calverts 40th year, they invited Alice Pattullo and publishers Design For Today to work with them on a creative print animation, following the journey of an idea as it transforms into a finished product. It's a whirlwind tour through illustration, art direction, design, file set up and reprographics, with a sprinkling of handy tips along the way.

The size of the publication is 148x95mm, portrait with a 6mm spine.

The below image shows the inside spread with hot foil blocking on the right hand page...

This publication is a long concertina - it is quite simply one long sheet which concertina folds into a pre-creased spine, which forms a cover.

The below image shows a 'birdseye' view which demonstrates how it folds into the spine. Over the last 30 years, I have always referred to this format as a long concertina, however in recent years people have started using the term Leporello to describe this type of folding - personally I think this is just confusing! 

The 26pp book is actually made from two sheets of paper, carefully joined, with a glued tab, which you can just make out in the image below.

The publication is printed Offset Litho on our Shiro Echo, White 250gsm, which is 100% Recycled and FSC accredited. The weight of the material is crucial for this format - too heavy and it will be too springy, too light and it won't take the creases and hold together well enough, 250gsm is just perfect. Below is the spread about Riso printing, where there is a 'tipped in' sheet, which is Riso printed on the right hand page.265x168

The page is 265x168mm and is folded once to reveal the below...

...and then folding up.

...there's even information about paper sizes.

It's a really beautifully conceived and executed publication with superb illustrations by Alice Pattullo and excellent writing.

Crush 03

Crush is a beer 'zine, which is an ongoing side project for design and branding studio O Street. The project allows the studio to combine a bunch of things they love: illustration, print, design and beer!

The focus of issue 3 is 'women in beer'. Historically, brewers were primarily women, until many were targeted as witches and this subject provides a rich seam of content for illustration ...perfect, as we are only a few weeks from Halloween! 

The size of the zine is 297x105mm, portrait and is saddle stitched. There is a 4pp cover printed on our Colorset (100% Recycled) Amethyst 270gsm with a 32pp text on our Crush Corn 100gsm, which is made using 15% residues from the processing of corn plus recycled and FSC fibres. There are articles about six beers, breweries and women in brewing, all beautifully and wittily illustrated.

There is also photography but you might have noticed that the images have an unusual look. The reason is that this 'zine is 'Riso' printed as all good zines are! If you aren't familiar with Riso printing, you can read about it here. Image reproduction is quite crude as it is a monotone with a coarse screen but the result is really unique and characterful and the illustrations have a wonderful quality to them.

Puck Collected #2

Puck Collective is an evolving group of creatives from around the world. Founded in 2010 by 5 illustrators and artists, Puck has grown into one of the largest and most revered illustration collectives in the UK. What makes Puck unique is that every year they launch a call for entries in order to replenish and invigorate the group with fresh work, new ideas and exciting creatives. Each year, the roster will have a limited amount of spaces, trying to bring in the right mix of people to produce shows and exhibitions, create print runs, small press comics and generally have a whole load of fun in the process. During that year all members contribute towards the publication "Puck Collected" showcasing the groups art, talent and creativity in a beautifully produced limited edition run.

...and this is Puck Collected #2, titled Cosmic

It is a collection of 16 x A6 cards. They are held together in a wonderful folded envelope which is Riso printed in two colour - wonderful fluorescent colour.

These are launched once a year, with new content every issue. The cards (bar one) were printed Offset Litho, on a Heidelberg B2 5 colour Speedmaster at Calverts in London. One of the cards (Marylou Favre) was digitally on a Konica Minolta KM C1100 to give a 'shiny' effect.

The cards are all printed on our Neptune Unique SoftWhite 300gsm, The choice was for an off white board which would work better with the artworks rather than a harsh white. The reverse of the cards are all printed in one colour (blue)

The pack makes a thickness of 5mm.

The collective also spun off to found Puck Studio, an exhibition services and print studio based in East London. Visit the link for further details.

The job was printed and finished by Bethnal Green based print cooperative, Calverts. If you haven't come across them, maybe you should have a look. Unusually for a print company, they are a worker's cooperative, therefore the management, tasks and profits are all shared equitably - almost sounds too good to be true! Production was handled by Samuel Rogers at Calverts

Kids With Puns #6

Kids With Puns is a printed publication which celebrates the humble pun. The magazine is a collaboration between illustrators, artists and designers and showcases a variety of wordplay related work. So if you love puns and visual puns in particular, you'll love this publication

Kids with Puns is the brainchild of designer Tom Dunn, who compiles and publishes the publication. It is published at irregular intervals - once he gets enough submissions!

Print is by Hato Press, who are based in East London and they have made a very tidy job of it. The size is A5 (210x148mm) portrait and is saddle stitched. It has a 4pp cover on our new Colorset Chilli 120gsm and 20pp text on StarFine White 115gsm.

Quaderno Notebooks

RISOTTO is a risograph print and design specialist based in Glasgow established by Gabriella Marcella. Riso printing has grown in popularity and is probably the cheapest of the "craft" printing techniques, enabling entry level creative projects to happen. Risotto has produced this lovely series of eight "Quaderno" notebooks using our Colorset 100% Recycled 270gsm for the cover materials.

Size of these super little notebooks is 180mm x140mm. The 4pp covers are on Colorset and there is a 40pp text. Covers are printed in just one colour (black) on front cover and the reverse

Below image shows detail of the imperfectly perfect result that you achieve with Riso printing. The effect is like a cross between letterpress and silkscreen.

The text pages are printed in a different style for each book.

The notebooks are saddle stitched and well finished.

Le Théâtre Graphique - Book Launch



This evening I went to the book launch of a new book published by Hato Press at the Whitechapel Gallery. The book is titled Le Théâtre Graphique and is by artist and designer Sarah Boris.

It was a beautiful evening and the Whitechapel gallery is a great place for a launch - an absolute jewel in East London's cultural landscape.

It was a busy evening and the books were flying off the shelves. Taking the form of a large flipbook, Le Théâtre Graphique is an exercise in form and colour, where the theatricality of a rising curtain is reimagined through the performative cycles of nature; night and day, sun and moon, the shifting tide...

Hato Press are a Riso printers and also a publisher. the book is printed Riso and the cover is hot foil blocked. It was a lovely evening and thanks Sarah Boris and Hato Press for inviting me.

You are invited to a book launch...

Next Thursday, a new book published by Hato Press is being launched at the Whitechapel Gallery.
