Jobs from the past - Number 148

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this one is from 2014...

Bristol Coffee Map 2014
The Bristol Coffee Map is a project instigated by Bristol based Studio Baum ...produced in celebration of coffee, Bristol and the art of print design.
The studio worked with a team of coffee aficionados over 9 months touring Bristol’s cafés and meeting the city’s talented baristas. The final result is this beautifully produced piece of tactile print.

The size of the map is 350x487mm folding down to175x122mm. It is produced on CRUSH, Coffee 120gsm from FAVINI, made using up to 15% residues from agro-industrial processes, recycled fibres and FSC fibres. Read more about Crush here: https://justinsamazingworldatfennerpaper.blogspot.com/2020/04/crush-truly-sustainable-paper.html
The map itself is printed offset litho in silver with an overprint silk-screened in turquoise. The project is illustrated in by a local Bristol illustrator Naomi Wilkinson - illustrations are just superb.

Design and production is by Sam Baum at Studio Baum. You can read more about it here:
Print is by Zone Graphics, based in Paddock Wood in Kent.

UEFA Euro 2020 is now Euro 2021!

With the delayed Euro 2020 football championship fast approaching, I’m pleased to show you our fabulous wallchart...
Hosted by 11 countries in 11 cities, the tournament was postponed due to the pandemic but rescheduled with the opening match on June 11th. England are among the favourites to win the tournament and are playing all three matches at Wembley, which will no doubt increase the excitement surrounding the current side.
This beautifully designed typographic wallchart is by David Coates, who also happens to be a member of the ISTD board (International Society of Typographic Designers) and my thanks to Dave for making it all happen - a perfect way to combine his love of type and football!  As you can see, it's already up on the wall in our office.

The wallcharts are printed by Zone Graphics on our lovely Pergraphica range from Mondi - Pergraphica Classic, Rough 120gsm. The size is 880 x 315mm. Typeface used is Foundry Context by The Foundry Types.
We have sent out a number of these wallcharts to our football loving design clients, but if you want to make absolutely sure you get a copy, you can email me justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

The Ink Art of China

Michael Goedhuis specialises in the best contemporary Asian and Western art. Their collection includes painting, sculpture, ink painting, bronzes and antiquities. They also represent contemporary artists and this catalogue shows the work of Ink Artists.
The size of the publication is 265x216mm, portrait with three hole sewn binding. It has a 4pp cover with 120mm flaps printed on a blue cover board from another well known Hull based paper merchant (!) with a 40pp text printed on Gardapat 13 Kiara 135gsm.
For readers not familiar with GardaPat 13, it's a fully coated paper but it really does have a dead flat MATT surface. There are many papers on the market which profess to be matt - some which incorporate the word matt in the name, but aren't! Apart from the high quality matt surface, this paper has an extraordinarily high bulk - this 135gsm text with a thickness of 175mics. If you would like to read more about the bulk, you can read it here.

Detail of the 3 hole sewing in the centre spread...
The text is digitally printed using an HP Indigo digital press and the results are superb, beautifully showing the artworks. As many readers will know, many materials have to be "Sapphire Treated" to work successfully on HP Indigo presses, however this project has been printed without sapphire treatment.
Detail showing the three hole sewing on the spine...
The 40pp text flows nicely in the hand, feeling substantial but not overly heavy.

Design and Art Direction is by Ornan Rotem at Sylph Editions. Printing and the terrific finishing - which was all achieved in house is by Zone Graphics, based in Paddock Wood in Kent.

Sylph Editions in China

Based in London, Sylph Editions publish fiction, monographs, theoretical essays, limited-edition art and photography books. Some of their work is of particular interest to buyers in China, so they produced this piece of literature as a promotional piece for the Chinese market.
The size of the publication is 210mm square. It has a 4pp cover printed on our Colorset (100% Recycled) Bright Red 120gsm and a 16pp text printed on our Neptune Unique SoftWhite 120gsm. Notice the deliberately lightweight cover - on a 120gsm! allowing the publication to flop and turn beautifully which suits the size and format superbly ..and it also works with the three hole sewn binding as you can see below:
The text is printed using an HP Indigo digital press and the results are superb, beautifully showing the books and publications that they produce.
Centre spread, with three hole sewing and red thread in spine.
Detail showing the three hole sewing:
The below spread shows the book, Painted Nudes about Saul Leiter's painted works. You can read more about this project here:

Ruder Finn Brand Manual

Ruder Finn is one of the world's largest independent global communications and creative agencies with dual headquarters in the U.S. and China. Founded in 1948 the company also has offices in London, Singapore and India.

The London office has recently moved and expanded their creative department and this is a project I was recently involved with - a very simple but effective piece of literature. Simply produced to explain their new branding internally, they decided that they would produce a piece of print rather than just distributing the information as a pdf.
Finished size is A5. The format is a long concertina, being an 8pp concertina fold. The flat size is 592x 210mm.
The material chosen is our Redeem 100% Recycled 80gsm. If you are not familiar with the paper, Redeem is at best, off white and 100% recycled and 80gsm, so the feel that the paper exudes is one of simplicity and purposefulness. Due to the small quantity required, it was printed digitally on a Ricoh press and the reproduction is superb.
Designed in house at Ruder Finn in London. Design Director is Alexandra Boylan, designer on the project is Jamie Buswell.

Repro, print and finishing is by Kent based Zone Graphics .
