Jobs from the past - Number 143

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good projects from years gone by and this is from 2014.

The Big Book Bonanza - 2014
This is the  'The Big Book Bonanza' catalogue which showcases the new Autumn releases from HarperCollins publishers. Throughout the publication are wonderful psychedelic Kaleidoscope style illustrations by Emily Forgot.
Size of the catalogue is 210mm square, saddle stitched. It is printed on our Omnia - 4pp cover on 320gsm and 32pp text on 150gsm.

The choice of material for this job was important, the reason being that the strong illustrations on the divider pages meant that it had to print solids really well but there's also lots of great commissioned photography included, so it was important to have a material which worked for both without compromising either and as I hope these pictures show, it looks really good.

The other very good reason that Omnia was chosen was the use of metallic gold pantone 'special' ink. On most traditional uncoated papers, metallics can look flat and with gold can just look a bit brown, but as I hope the below image demonstrates, metallic gold really does look metallic on Omnia.
Design and art direction is by ZoĆ« Bather.

The catalogues are printed offset litho in four colour process plus metallic gold special. Print production was handled by Alan Mountain at Forward Print (sales@forward-print.com)

Christmas comes early...

Well, that's not quite true as these lovely cards are actually from last year, but I didn't receive copies until later, so it never seemed the right time to write about Christmas!

These gatefold cards are A5 (210x148mm) and are printed offset litho in CMYK plus a metallic gold special on our Omnia 320gsm. Below is a birdseye view...
The below image is the inside of the card, laid out flat...

The above picture shows the outside, laid out flat, showing the die cut which represents the "doors" to the Gin Shop. The card is embossed and printed with a tinted gloss UV varnish. Unlike most uncoated products, you can successfully gloss UV varnish on Omnia (with a single hit) and it works really well - as you can see in the below pic...

In the same way, Omnia also really works with metallic inks, this really does look gold  and not a dirty brown (which can happen on other uncoated papers!) as you can see below...
Omnia is a really bulky board and this has been beautifully creased.

Jobs from the past - Number 131

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this publication is from 2014.

67 Tufton Street SW1
Situated in the Smith Square conservation area, this Queen Anne style building was originally a Post Office and subsequently the UK Government’s Cabinet Office and a fine example of London’s architectural legacy. This office building was sympathetically restored and re-modelled to a plan by EPR Architects resulting in 22 luxury apartments.
This is the sales brochure produced to show the development, the surrounding area and the wonderful interiors.
The size is 290 x 225mm, portrait, having a 4pp cover using a Buckram embossed chocolate brown cover board and is 'swiss bound'. The 56pp text is printed offset litho on our Omnia 150gsm. It is printed CMYK plus a metallic gold special and the result is absolutely superb.
The special pantone gold looks amazing ...really metallic and because Omnia is not smooth, it gives the feeling of something that is really metallic rather than something that is smooth and shiny.

The striking commissioned photography has reproduced brilliantly on the Omnia whilst not losing the tactility and natural uncoated feel that was required. The look and feel is a confident, beautifully crafted piece of literature, certainly not some "glossy property brochure"!
The swiss binding, still means that this brochure is made up using 'section sewn' signatures and above you can see the threads running across the inside spreads.

The metallic gold is used both as section dividers but also for the floorplan pages. The quality of reproduction of the interiors is wonderfully impressive with metallic fittings looking metallic and a photographic quality to the images..
The above and below images show the floorplans of the penthouse apartments.
The below image shows the Swiss binding. For those that are unfamiliar with this type of binding, it is essentially a section sewn or perfect bound binding method which has a "lip" of about 15/20mm of book-cloth wrapped around the spine. The cloth covered spine is stuck flat on the reverse of the text block with a strip of glue into a 4pp cover with a "freestanding" spine which means that the cover (which can often be very springy with normal adhesive binding) sits totally flat.
Branding for the development and the design of this amazing brochure is by London design agency The Ideas Factory under the leadership of Mark Wilkins. Designer on the brochure was Yafet Bisrat. Print production is by Push and it is superb. Both the "ink on paper" and the finishing/binding is amazing.

Jerwood Photoworks Awards

The Jerwood/Photoworks Awards support photographers, or artists using photography, to make new work and significantly develop their practice. The Awards are a collaboration between Jerwood Arts and Photoworks, supported by Official Print Partner Spectrum Photographic. The Awards particularly seek to encourage artists and photographers exploring new approaches to photography, and/or whose practice is experimental. Photoworks is a registered charity and the only organisation with a national remit for photography in England. Their work is supported by public funding through Arts Council England’s National Portfolio under the directorship of Shoair Mavlian.
Presented every two years, the Awards are open to arts practitioners using photography who are within 10 years of establishing their practice. There is no age limitation and no requirement for formal education or qualifications. This publication marks the second awards with awards to Alejandra Carles-Tolra, Sam Laughlin, and Lua Ribeira.
The awards publication is A5 (210x148mm) portrait and is PUR bound with a 4pp cover and 48pp text.
The 4pp cover is on Omnia 320gsm and the 48pp text is on Omnia 150gsm.

The brochure is printed offset litho in four colour process throughout with a full out silver solid printed on the cover. As always (...this is the plug for the paper!) the images look superb on the Omnia; the fleshtones in particular look absolutely stunning (see below) and the reproduction of the dark shadowy areas (see above) look amazing - keeping all the detail in those heavy areas of CMYK together which would be completely lost on a traditional uncoated paper.
Fleshtone detail...

The black and white images of Sam Laughlin (below) look amazing...
The size and combination of weights is just right and the book flows superbly in the hand. The text is printed on Omnia 150gsm.
Returning to the cover and another very good reason that Omnia was chosen for this project. On most traditional uncoated papers, metallic inks can look flat and silver can end up just looking grey, but as I hope the below image demonstrates, the metallic silver really does look amazingly metallic on Omnia with the uncoated texture.
Below shows the very neat PUR binding.
The design of this amazing awards catalogue and also of the awards identity is by Dean Pavitt and it was kind of him to send me copies with a lovely note...
The excellent printing is by Ashley House Printing, based in Exeter, Devon.

Wardian - East Tower

Wardian London is a residential-led development under construction on the Isle of Dogs, London from Eco World-Ballymore and designed by architect firm Glenn Howells. The scheme consists of two skyscrapers and groundworks were started in 2015. I wrote about the main book here in September and this is the accompanying brochure containing the floorplans.

Size of the brochure is 320x240mm, portrait and is saddle stitched with black wires. The 4pp cover is hot foil blocked in metallic gold foil on Racing Green 270gsm, from that other, well known, Hull based paper merchant!

The 4pp flysheet sets the scene of this verdant development where each apartment has it's own 'sky garden' and the emphasis is on plants and the seasons.
The 'flysheets' appears through the front and back and it is printed on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm, an amazing print result on a 60gsm sheet of uncoated paper! ...it just feels beautiful.
The 44pp text is printed on our Omnia 120gsm. The reason that Omnia was chosen for the main book is because it would beautifully reproduce the photography with the rich greens of the gardens, solid colours and dark photography and most importantly feel special.
The same goes for this floorplans book. Rich solid blacks against large areas of white, looks and feels special.
Printed offset litho throughout in CMYK plus metallic gold ink, which as you can see from the image below, actually looks gold....
The black solids are deep black allowing the metallic gold to really pop.
...a nice touch is the use of the black wire on the saddle stitches
Design is by Made Thought with print by Push based in London.

As with the main book that I wrote about, this brochure also features fantastic quality reproduction and a wonderful combination of different materials with excellent binding and attention to detail. Yet another truly stunning job.
