Baines & Fricker swing tags

Established in 2011, Baines&Fricker design and make furniture and accessories for the modern home and contract sector. Products are designed and made from their Brighton workshop using British materials wherever possible. The swing tags for the furniture and accessories have been designed and produced by Emily Macaulay at Stanley James Press, a "design company, specialising in the design and production of printed goods"

Photograph by Curtis James http://www.thisisbeyondwork.com/
The swing tags have been produced in just one colour on our Flora Anice 350gsm and then punched and strung with a coloured skein.
Detail showing the stringing:

For those not familiar with Flora, it is a 30% recycled paper (and FSC accredited) with natural, deliberately visible, inclusions and fibres. It comes in nine different shades and has a character all of it's own! Below is detail showing the surface an inclusions:

This project is a superb example of choosing the correct stock for the job, adding minimal print processes and a lovely touch, such as the skein. A wonderful, simple, quality result.

New Flora Recycled Swatch

If you aren't familiar with Flora, it is a part recycled text and cover paper with a deliberately recycled look and feel with specks and inclusions, so it looks deliberately flecky and specky. Flora is produced by Cordenons in Italy with 30% post consumer de-inked waste, together with 60% of virgin FSC pulp and with the "secret" ingredient of 10% of cotton fibres, which gives the paper a wonderful tactile feel.
All the shades have the specks and inclusions with the exception of the Gardenia shade which is a "clean" neutral white shade.
The range consists of nine shades in total including Anice, Giglio, Avorio, Tabacco, Noce, Gardenia and three new deeper shades Crusca, Canella and Ginepro.
Below shows the detail of the natural, deliberately visible, inclusions and fibres - this paper has a character all of it's own!
To demonstrate the printability, there is a printed sample produced on the Flora Gardenia 130gsm - which is the shade without the inclusions.
It really is a lovely range. Muted natural colours and excellent printability. Here are some previous projects which have used Flora to great effect:

Mulberry Mongoose Cards

Mulberry Mongoose is a jewellery workshop, located on a well-trodden elephant path in the remote Zambian bush. Local craftswomen make all the jewellery by hand using natural materials from the South Luangwa valley. This simple 4pp piece of literature is used as an information leaflet promoting the jewellery and tours of the workshop to the tourists who stay at the local safari lodges in the local area. These simple cards and price tags are used in the shop adjacent to the workshop, where they sell directly to the tourists who stay at the local safari lodges in the local area.

Size of the cards is 85 x 55mm and they are printed Offset Litho on our lovely Flora Anice 350gsm.
Flora is a part recycled text and cover paper with a deliberately recycled look and feel with specks and inclusions, so it looks deliberately flecky and specky.

The price tags are a teeny 60 x 20mm and have a little perforation, so that the price can be written on in pen but removed by the customer if it is being given as a gift - that is a really lovely touch.

World Environment Day

Today is World Environment Day. This event is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. Above all, World Environment Day is the "people's day" for doing something to take care of the Earth. That "something" can be local, national or global. It can be a solo action or involve a crowd.

What better day for me to show the wide range of recycled and environmentally friendly papers in our range...

If you'd like to have an intro to the range or just have a chat about recycled papers, give me a call or drop me an email: justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

Spitfire Audio - The Annual

In the spring of 2018, British music technology company Spitfire Audio began compiling stories, photos, conversations and interviews with a whole host of musicians and friends of the company, collected together in a very special print publication called The Spitfire Audio Annual.
At a whopping 246 pages, it is 18mm thick and is shown in the image above with the black covered, debossed slipcase. The Annual boasts behind-the-scenes photography of the extraordinary Schimmel Piano factory and the hallowed Harbeth Speakers workshop, featured in the publication alongside and illustrations by Jan Buchczik.
Taking cues from the production of music scores, the in-house team has balanced exclusive, beautifully-commissioned stories and images with a specially-designed typeface to sit within its functional, minimal approach to design.
Said co-founder Christian Henson: “There have been many surprises on this odyssey that is Spitfire Audio, an idea born in a pub in Soho with my business partner Paul over a decade ago. All enabled by our extended family, comprised of thousands of like-minded talented people around the world who have given us trust, belief and vital feedback. So, as with any proud family, we thought it only appropriate to create a family album — an Annual — as a memento of an incredible year that we have all shared together.”
The publication size is 270x200mm, portrait and is 'spiral bound', which means it is individual 'leaves' held together with the binding loop. There are 93leaves (186pp) on Shiro Echo, Bright White 120gsm and 26 leaves (52pp) on Harvest, Straw 130gsm. The image spreads are mainly produced on the Shiro Echo and the reproduction is superb.

There are also the lovely surprise 'tip ins' which happen infrequently but work beautifully.
...and a spread showing a Spitfire, printed on Harvest, Straw
Below is a detail image showing the spiral binding (cover is on Cairn board 500 mics from Paperback)
Harvest is a part recycled text and cover paper with a deliberately recycled look and feel with specks and inclusions, so it looks deliberately flecky and specky. Harvest is produced with 30% post consumer de-inked waste, together with 60% of virgin FSC pulp 10% cotton fibres, which gives the paper a wonderful tactile feel. See the image below to see the detail...
Interestingly, the spread below is printed on Shiro Echo on the left hand side and on Harvest Straw on the right hand page. The printer has worked very hard to compensate for the differences in shade and printability to get a seemingly seamless end result.
The designers of the Annual are Aspa Founti and Tom Howe at Spitfire Audio.

The publication is printed offset litho, CMYK throughout. The excellent print is by Park Communications, who are based in East London, with Steve Ilott managing the project. The below image shows the full extent of the 246 page publication with a thickness of 18mm
This publication is a great piece of print, it also demonstrates a real commitment by the owners of this business that they want to celebrate 10 years, by producing something tangible. A piece of print, an object, a creation that will last (if stored correctly) for hundreds of years. It is a celebration in print and is something that these days is being produced less and less.

Warner Edwards Garden

This garden at the Chelsea Flower show is inspired by Falls Farm, Northamptonshire, where every bottle of Warner Edwards Gin is distilled. The farm is situated on the remains of medieval terraced gardens, now a beautiful stepped grass landscape, which is represented discretely in the Warner Edwards Garden’s topography. Bee-friendly plants reflect the farm’s apiary, and thyme and lemon balm, which are highly aromatic, can be used in garnishing gin and tonic.

This booklet explains all about the garden, the designers, the layout and the plants which are used. It is printed offset litho in CMYK throughout with hot foil blocking on the cover.
The 4pp cover is printed on Flora Tabacco 240gsm and the 12pp text is on Flora Noce 130gsm. As you can see from the image below, the Noce is a slightly lighter shade than the Tabacco used for the cover.
The size of the booklet is 148x105mm, portrait and is singer sewn with green thread.

Above shows the centre spread with the singer sewing in the spine and below you can see the outside spine. A superb piece of sewing...
