Jobs from the past - Number 177

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by - this project is from 2016.

Reach, Presentation, Service & Expertise 2016

Established by Albert Hill and Matt Gibberd in 2004,The Modern House is the UK’s foremost estate agency for houses and apartments of outstanding design and they have a passion for modern architecture. This is their company brochure (titled "The Art of Selling Architecture") which sets out to explain who they are, what they do and how they do it - Reach, Presentation, Service and Expertise.

The cover is simply hot foil blocked in black foil and nothing on the back cover - it's wonderfully minimal. Size of the brochure is 280 x 230mm, portrait and is saddle stitched. It has an 8pp cover with 160mm wide flaps. The cover is printed and hot foil blocked Fabrique Moderne, Grey 200gsm which has a lovely textured 'watercolour' look and feel.
The text materials chosen are a combination of Omnia White 120gsm and Tree Free Bamboo Cream, 120gsm for the text (black only) There are 28pp in total with 12pp on the Omnia.

As you can see from centre spread above, the images have reproduced brilliantly on the Omnia, with the combination of exterior and interior photography. The Modern House have used Omnia many times, so they know just how good the combination of tactile feel and excellent reproduction is. The correct selection of weights, means that the 28pp text flows beautifully
Black type looking good on the Tree Free Bamboo, Cream 120gsm - made using 75% bamboo and 25% cotton - that's 100% non tree fibres!
A lovely touch is the black wire used for the saddle stitching. Works beautifully with the hot foil blocking in black on the front cover...
The superb art direction and design is by Tom Watt at Field Projects. Print was by Push Print who went into administration in 2021.

Selling Your Home the Modern Way

Established by Albert Hill and Matt Gibberd, The Modern House is the UK’s foremost estate agency, only selling modernist and contemporary architecture for over a decade. This is a piece of
promotional literature titled "Selling Your Home the Modern Way" giving the facts about how The Modern House operates, supported with research and statistics.
The format is an 8pp concertina fold, finished size is 200x262mm folding out to 800x262mm. Below you can see a birds-eye view of the format.

The material chosen for the publication is our Omnia. This material has a high bulk, required as this is only an 8pp but a board weight would be too heavy, so this is produced on 150gsm which has a bulk of 200microns, which feels just right. The photography has reproduced brilliantly on the Omnia, with the combination of exterior and interior photography and fleshtones..
The Modern House have used Omnia many times, so they know just how good the combination of tactile feel and excellent reproduction is ...and the solid black is really solid and dead flat matt:

The Modern House - postcard set

Established by Albert Hill and Matt Gibberd, The Modern House is the UK’s foremost estate agency, only selling modernist and contemporary architecture for over a decade.
This is their most recent promotional mailer titled "Selling Britain's Finest Modern Architecture" showing four properties in the format of a concertina postcard book.
  
The format is a 12pp A6 concertina. Flat size is 148x634mm, folding to 148x105mm. The concertina folds into a pre-creased 3mm spine. Printed CMYK offset litho and the cards are perforated.

The concertina is printed on Redeem 100% Recycled 315gsm, which prints beautifully and fits with the modernist, utilitarian architecture.

The superbly creased 3mm spine. It's touches such as this - good creasing - that make all the difference to a project like this:

...and the other thing that shouldn't be overlooked is the perforations. As you can see from this picture, perforations can look great, even beautiful. These perfs. only look this good because the designer took the time to explain what he wanted to the printer. There are a selection of different perforation "bars" available at print finishers - so do ask a printer to get samples and to show you different types. If you don't convey your expectations to the printer, then they'll generally use the perforating bar that's on the machine and you may be disappointed.

The Modern House

Now hold onto your hat! ...this is simply my favourite job from last year - I've been keeping it up my sleeve, so I can write about it at length! 
Established by Albert Hill and Matt Gibberd in 2004,The Modern House is the UK’s foremost estate agency for houses and apartments of outstanding design and they have a passion for modern architecture.

This is their company brochure (titled "The Art of Selling Architecture") which sets out to explain who they are, what they do and how they do it, illustrated with 4 case studies and it does it brilliantly!

The Size of the brochure is 240x330mm, portrait, perfect bound. There is a 4pp cover which is on Omnia 200gsm  - this might seem lightweight but Omnia is very bulky and this opens well and doesn't disrupt the flow. The first and last pages are also on Omnia (120gsm) - printed to work with the cover working as end papers - the below pic shows inside front cover L/H and pg 1of text on R/H.


The images used for the cover and endpapers are from a series by artist Heidi Specker, called "IM GARTEN"  (http://www.heidispecker.de/books/imgarten/)

Now the reason that this job is more than a bit of a treat, is that after the lovely images on the cover and endpapers ...which let's face it, couldn't be anything less like a brochure for an Estate Agent, we go into a beautifully simple 2 colour section printed in black and red using amazing images of modernist buildings, simply reproduced as halftones with type in Futura.


The first section gives an overview of the company and the way they work. It's an 8pp section with a very "mono" feel and is printed on our Colorset Light Grey 120gsm which is subtly grey, giving it a rough and raw feel reflecting the fact that many of the structures that they work with are formed from concrete.

After the raw feel of the first 8pp we come to the middle 16pp which show 4 case studies of properties that they have marketed: Space House, Mildmay Park, Woodstock Studios and the iconic High & Over. The amazing architectural photography has reproduced brilliantly on our Omnia 120gsm whilst not losing the tactility that the mono section has already set - and certainly not coming across as a "glossy estate agent brochure"...



After the case study section, there is a further 8pp mono section (black and a blue special) about the people in the company, what their customers and the press say about them finishing off with Heidi Specker's images on the endpaper and cover. 

So why do I like this brochure so much? (...apart from it being on our paper!) - well, the materials used work so well with the design - the number of sections and size (8/16pp sections of 340x240mm) mean that it's maximised the use of the printing press and paper format and that it's so simple and reflects what the company does so well -
and it has some lovely touches - for example, the use of the grey as the text material and the design of the outside cover which has horizontal strips of gloss varnish applied - a machine varnish (not a UV varnish) which are deliberately subtle (see pic. on right)

Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus school is quoted as saying "Only work which is the product of inner compulsion can have spiritual meaning" personally, I think that this piece is that type of work.
