Arts Council - Annual Review 2009

In the early summer I started to put together dummies in various formats for Intro for the Arts Council annual review - and last week I received the finished article ...and very nice it is too!

Size is 215x270mm Portrait. It has a 4pp cover and a 50pp text.

and now for the paper plug! ...it is printed on our lovely OMNIA 200gsm and 120gsm with a 12pp gloss section on Millennium Real Art 130gsm.

Photography is all great, as you would expect given the various arts subjects covered, but as there are 49 photography credits, I've decided not to list them!
It's printed by Seacourt (based in Oxfordshire) using waterless offset

Lead designer at Intro on this project was Adrian Talbot

Great quote!

This is a lovely self promotional piece from Neil Tinson Studio who are based in Cornwall (...so for those people that think we're Londoncentric, think again)

It is A2 size folding to A5, printed in two special colours.

It is printed on our Clervaux [1 sided] 110gsm which is uncoated but smooth one side and toothy (roughish) on the reverse. Never heard of it? well that's because it's in a range of one, therefore we don't have a swatch or anything like that I'm afraid but if you'd like to see a Clervaux sample - drop me a line... justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

...and thank you for the nice note Neil.

CMYK Board!

Have a look at this lovely self promotional piece for freelance designer Alex Parrott.

It's made up using 8 layers of COLORSET 270gsm (that's 2160gsm!) in CYMK colours and foiled in white.

It uses four COLORSET shades: Nero, Light Blue, Magenta and Solar.

It was produced by Downeys who have made a lovely job of duplexing the sheets and foiling in white on front and back.

It's worth making the point that although we (at Fenner Paper) don't offer a duplexing service (as another well known paper merchant based in Hull does) ...there are printers and finishers that offer this service at quite reasonable rates!

Good luck to Alex and anyone wishing to engage him can contact him on alex@alexparrott.co.uk and just pop the finders fee/commission cheque in the post to me!

...and thanks for the nice note Alex!

A paper mill actually opens in the UK!

I've just returned from holiday to some good news!

Now many people will have heard me say about how paper manufacturing is virtually dead in the UK (which, sadly, in many ways it is) but here is a brand spanking new paper mill which has just started production here in the UK.

Now I don't want anyone to get too excited because it won't actually affect most of us in our sector of what is generally called the "fine papers" market as this new mill only produces recycled newsprint - just tonnes and tonnes of it - (just one grade and pretty much all the same weight and certainly no sheets! ...but it does at least give us in the paper industry some good news.

For those paper geeks out there, the technical information is as follows:
It is the world's largest recycled newsprint machine. The mill is called Palm Paper, a subsidiary of Germany-based Papierfabrik Palm. The paper machine was started at its King's Lynn site in Norfolk on 21 August, 3 weeks ahead of schedule (that's the Germans for you!)
The machine, which has a net width of 10.63m, is set to produce 400,000 tonnes of newsprint – all from 100% selected recycled fibre.

Coast A/W 2009

This is a FAAAAAAAANTASTIC job!

It's the Autumn/Winter 09 lookbook for Coast and it's just looks amazing!

The job is printed on OMNIA with an Offenbach Bible wraparound jacket.

Key amazing things are:
1. Solid metallic gold on the cover looks great on the Omnia (as do the images but that goes without saying!)
2. Job is three-hole-sewn which gives the job a lovely quality
3. 6 page cover cleverly holds the Offenbach in place and also covers up the DVD.
4. The jacket/wrap works really well as a poster (quite often on jobs this trick doesn't quite work but on this one it does).
5. .....and it just looks and feels great!

Above is the outside of the wrap, below is the inside.

Design is by Six Creative (http://www.six-creative.com/)

Print is by Principal Colour (http://www.principalcolour.co.uk/)

Photography is by Lachlan Bailey (http://www.streetersnewyork.com/)

It is just a really lovely job. Well art directed and designed, great images and good print and finishing.

I've treated myself!

Now many of you will know if you've received a note from me, that I normally write using a fountain pen. I can't really say why, it's probably because I'm a bit old fashioned and I quite like traditional things. Many people use an ink pen because using a nib improves the legibility of their handwriting, sadly that's not the case with me!

Anyway, quite by chance a new shop has opened (in Tonbridge of all places) which is a pen shop and it's a veritable aladdins cave for pen lovers. They combine an offer of restored vintage pens with the latest modern offerings from Lamy and Sailor.

And here's what I've treated myself to...

It's a 1995 Shaeffer endorsement set with a solid Oak base. It was brand new and boxed and very good value.

I know that you will all feel that the design of their website could be improved - but get over that - and have a look at http://www.andys-pens.co.uk/ - they have some really amazing things ...and if you venture to Tonbridge to have a look at the shop, don't forget to look me up.

By the way the shop is owned and run by a guy called Andy.
