Blogtastic!

Some rather amazing news...
It turns out that this month my blog has been very popular and in June I've had nearly 95,000 page views!
I don't get too fussed about statistics, however it would be nice to have over 100,000. So please have a look at whatever pages you like, there's over ten years of blog posts here - 1727 posts in total! Many articles about beautifully printed jobs, different finishing, three hole sewing, singer sewing, hot foil blocking etc etc...
There's only 48 hours to go, so please spread the word!

Today is World Rainforest Day

As today is World Rainforest Day what better day to have a 'Throwback Thursday' and show you this amazing job for the Rainforest Action Network produced in 2007...

At This Rate is a printed publication produced to highlight the scale of the destruction of the world's rainforests.

Design is by Studio8, Matt Willey and Zoƫ Bather were designers on the project. The amazing photography is by Giles Revell.
Inside front cover spread

The size of the job is 220mm x160mm portrait and has an 8pp cover with a 24pp text.

The book forms a series of spreads which really show off the stunning photography of the skeletal leaves, which look so much like aerial views of cities and make the spreads very powerful. Below is "Every day we lose an area larger than all five boroughs of New York City"

As mentioned before, it is best described as an 8pp cover with a 24pp text, but the text is actually formed by a long concertina (with one join) and the 8pp cover, which has a 10mm capacity spine actually works as a "dustjacket" as you can see in the birdseye pic, below...

It was constructed like this for reasons of both economy and ecology! The whole job actually comes out of one B1 sheet of paper meaning that it was relatively economical from a printing point of view and it was also not wasteful which is in line with the clients aims and objectives.

On the reverse of the long concertina, which is hidden from view, is an image taken around the outside trunk of a tree from a tropical rainforest...

It is quite simply a stunning job both from the concept, design, photography, format, printing and finishing. It deservedly won 2008 DesignWeek award for Editorial Design.

The images were offset litho printed as a Tritone with a high density black ink. The repro and superb print is by Granite, who have since gone bust. The material choice is Neptune Unique FSC 200gsm which not only printed fantastically but was also the environmental choice by having Forestry Stewardship Council certification, which was more unusual for fine papers in those days.

World Environment Day 2023

#BeatPlasticPollution

Today is World Environment Day. This event is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began in 1974, the event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. Above all, World Environment Day is the "people's day" for doing something to take care of the Earth. That "something" can be local, national or global. It can be a solo action or involve a crowd.
What better day for me to remind you of a material we launched to coincide with COP26.

PaperWise is an entirely new concept, a range of paper and board manufactured from agricultural waste - this is the stems and leaves left over the harvest and which is often left in the field or burnt. There are additional benefits: PaperWise is produced in factories in India and South America that make a big difference to local communities. Investments are made in education, infrastructure, and healthcare while the manufacturing process is geared toward safety, zero waste, and preserving local ecology.
Lifecycle analysis (LCA) conducted by the University of Amsterdam (IVAM) has concluded that the environmental impact is 47% lower than FSC-paper made from trees and 29% lower than recycled paper...
The natural shade, manufactured from 100% agri-waste is also completely unbleached and has lower Co2 emissions than virgin fibre or recycled papers.
The PaperWise range is held in stock by us at Fenner Paper in Tonbridge. European stocks are held in Rotterdam and include a wide range of packaging boards and lightweight papers with food approval, copier paper and even corrugated boards.

You can read more about this new range HERE and about how this fits with the UN sustainable development goals...
The paper and boards are suitable for all print work and packaging, with a one side coated packaging board up to 465microns and the latest addition to the range is 130gsm...
PaperWise founder Peter van Rosmalen features on this 1 minute video here:

Jobs from the past - Number 163

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this one is from 2012...

Ally Capellino Lookbook - Spring/Summer 2012

This is a beautiful lookbook for British fashion designer, Ally Capellino. With a worlwide reputation for fashion, the brand now focuses on luxury acessories. There are now also two Ally Capellino stores on opposite sides of London, in the East End’s Calvert Avenue and Portobello Road in the West.

Size of the publication is 163x225mm, portrait, saddle stitched. It is made up using a 4pp cover on uncoated with a 32pp text of our Omnia 120gsm which is just simply stunning with the images used.

Reproduction of the close up images showing the detail of all the leather and stitching is fantastic.

Photography is by Agnes Lloyd-Platt. Print by Ambrose Press.
