Lemon Tree Business Cards

LemonTree are a cleaning company based in the South East ...and they are a cleaning company with an environmental ethos. Only businesses with the highest standards of social and environmental performance are eligible for a B Corps certificate and LemonTree is on the path to B Corp full Certification, which certifies companies worldwide, because of the positive impact on customers, workers, community and the environment. This is their lovely Business Card...
The size is 55 x 85mm and it is printed on our Crush Kiwi made by Favini in Italy. Crush is made partly using the residue from the industrial processing of crushed citrus fruit, coffee, nuts, olives, kiwi, corn, lavender cherries and grapes, these agro-industrial "end of life" products replacing up to 15% of conventional tree pulp. This is combined with 40% recycled fibres (post consumer waste) and the remainder is FSC virgin pulp and the product is FSC certified. The range is produced using green energy and is carbon balanced at the mill gate (we can also supply the paper in the UK, certified as carbon balanced).
The card is digitally printed by MTA on their HP Indigo press. It has been printed with a white layer first with the yellow printing on top which makes the colors, especially the vivid yellow really pop!
As you can see from the image below, the Crush Kiwi has inclusions in the paper which are visible. The paper was chosen because of it's environmental pedigree and that the shade of pale green really worked with the identity.
The card is printed on Crush Kiwi 250gsm, which has then been duplexed to make 500gsm.

Design is by Imagist, a brand consultancy based in London and the design is by Rose Cornish.

Today is Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event first held on April 22, 1970. It now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.

What better day to tell you about the recently refreshed Shiro Echo 100% Recycled paper range!
Favini is a paper manufacturer based in Italy with mills in Vicenza near the city of Venice and at Crusinallo. They have taken a lead in the utlisation of non-wood pulps since the early 1990’s and they are the manufacturers of the Shiro Echo range. It was launched over a decade ago being a range of  text & cover papers manufactured using 100% post consumer waste.
Shiro Echo was originally just two shades; a white shade, which is a natural/off white (and similar to the old shade of Cyclus) and a Bright White. With weights from 80gsm up to 350gsm, it is 100% Recycled and also carries the FSC Recycled classification.
The new additions to the range are three 'RAW' shades which have a slightly rougher/toothier surface and are in earthy tones of Grey, Sand and Black. The new shades are available in 120, 200, 250 and 350gsm.
To accompany the brand refresh, there is a new printed sample book too...
Artist Lyndon Hayes was commissioned to capture the processes and the sheer scale and the noise of the production at the mill.
Size is 240x154mm, portrait and shows offset litho, silkscreen and hot foil blocking.
Design and art direction is by Silk Pearce. If you would like a copy of the Shiro Echo showbook and swatch, just ask me for one! Email justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

Amaffi

The Amaffi Perfume House is a luxury fragrance brand based in Switzerland. With boutiques in New York, London and Moscow, they create only naturally derived fragrances and are at the very exclusive end of exclusive!
Baddeley Brothers were commissioned to produce these luxurious correspondence notecards. They are exceptionally beautifully hot foil blocked using The Tube, Black 260gsm, which have been duplexed with an uncoated white board for the reverse.
If you aren't familiar with The Tube, you can read about it HERE. The Tube is made by Favini in Italy and is engineered to give a gorgeous flawless matt effect and the smoothly tactile surface exudes luxury.
As well as being hot foil blocked, the cards are also 'gilt edged' with gold foil, as you can see from the detail image below...
Detail showing the hot-foil blocking using a combination die, which raises the foil with an embossed finish, which highlights the matt flatness of the board.
To accompany the notecards are matching, handmade DL size envelopes which are foil lined
My thanks to Baddeley Brothers for sharing these exceptional samples with us.

Billy Tannery Business Cards

Billy Tannery started with a discovery. Founders Jack and Rory found out that due to decades of decline in the British leather industry, many thousands of goatskins leftover from the food industry were being thrown away each year. So in 2016, building on centuries of local leather knowledge, they transformed a farm building in the Midlands into a small-batch tannery - the first to be built in the UK for well over 50 years! ...and these are their cracking business cards.
What better paper to print the publication on than a paper made using 25% upcycled leather! Remake is the range produced by Favini and is leather ‘upcycling’ on an industrial scale and represents the latest frontier in upcycling in the paper sector. This unique and innovative paper replaces 25% of wood tree pulp with leather residues. You can read more about Remake here.
Size of the cards is 53x85mm and are printed on Remake, Sand 380gsm.

In the detail image below you can see the visible leather fibres in the sheet and the proud statement about the paper's provenance.
The cards are printed and finished by Typecast Colour, based in Paddock Wood, Kent and was printed on their Xerox digital press.

Dark Objects

This is the private view invitation produced for the Huxley-Parlour Gallery. The occasion is the opening of a retrospective exhibition of works by acclaimed American painter Donald Sultan. Spread over two floors of the London gallery, the exhibition includes 17 works produced from 1977 through to 2019. His series ‘Black Lemons’ was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1988, and preceded an in-depth investigation into the reduction of form.

Size of the invitation is A5 (210x148mm) portrait and is itself an example of reduction of form, being very simply, but beautifully, hot foil blocked on both sides with gloss black foil using our Sumo, Black 1.5mm board.
The below image should give you some idea as to the 'heft' of the board!
Design is by Dan Cottrell Studio based in London and Amsterdam. Superb hot-foil blocking is by the Geoff Neal Group based in Feltham.

Lunar

Tonight there is a Full Moon, this one is called the Snow Moon in the northern hemisphere, so what better day than to write about our range from Favini, called Lunar.
This range is very different to other pearlescent/metallic papers on the market, which are normally rather 'blingy' with bright shades. Lunar has seven subtle shades which are inspired by moonlight rays illuminating the dark with the shade range extending from glowing white and silvery shimmer to inky navy and pitch black.
As well as the subtle shades, this is also a subtly tactile range as Lunar has 2 wonderful micro-embossed textures, Nexus and Mini...
Detail showing the Nexus micro embossing
Detail showing the Mini micro embossing
This is a paper to be experienced through the fingers. The subtle micro embossed patterns give a multi-sensory experience and charge your imagination adding that third dimension to any print design and luxurious packaging project.

To accompany the swatch, there is a printed showbook to demonstrate printing quality and finishes.
Size is 240x154mm and features the letterpress work of Typoretum (see above image). Typoretum are a creative letterpress printing and design studio based in Colchester in Essex. Cecilia and Justin (good name!) are annual regulars at the St Bride Wayzgoose where we always see each other.
The showbook is superbly printed and finished and is 'French Folded' (see above) - this is where the folded edges are on the foredge of the book, as in the picture above.
Design and art direction is by Silk Pearce.

Turning Waste into Worth

Billy Tannery started with a discovery. Founders Jack and Rory found out that due to decades of decline in the British leather industry, many thousands of goatskins leftover from the food industry were being thrown away each year. So in 2016, building on centuries of local leather knowledge, they transformed a farm building in the Midlands into a small-batch tannery - the first to be built in the UK for well over 50 years.
This simple piece of promotional literature tells the story - Turning Waste into Worth. The finished size is A6 (148x105mm) but is simply a folded piece of A4 folding down to A6 - one of the simplest and most cost effective formats available, yet also one of the most effective.

Cards - Made by Shannon

One of the great pleasures I have doing this job is receiving lovely things in the post and last week, I received a lovely selection of cards from Made by Shannon...

This greeting card publishers is run by a lovely lady called Shannon and they are based in Surrey. The below card is printed on our CRUSH Grape 250gsm
Above is a more detailed image and hopefully you can see the small specs and inclusions in the paper. Crush is made partly using the residue from the industrial processing of agro-industrial "end of life" products replacing up to 15% of conventional tree pulp. The 15% process residues are combined with 40% recycled fibres (post consumer waste) and the remainder is FSC virgin pulp and the product is FSC certified. The range is produced using green energy and is carbon balanced at the mill gate (we can also supply the paper in the UK, certified as carbon balanced)
The A6 cards are printed and hot foil blocked in-house, where they have letterpress and a 1980's hot foil blocker which is used on cards and envelopes. However, they also sometimes just hand apply gold leaf as you can in the small embellishment below.
The above SIXTEEN TODAY card is printed on our Colorset Storm 270gsm. The beautifully hot foiled envelopes are made using Colorset Storm 120gsm.
...which also have a superb embossing on the flap:
At this time of year, personalised Christmas cards are in great demand and below is an example printed on our CRUSH Kiwi 250gsm.

Thank you to Shannon for sending me this selection and if you would like to see her range of cards and gifts, you can see them HERE.
