Made by Shannon

Here is a lovely selection of cards from Made by Shannon...

This greeting card publishers is run by a lovely lady called Shannon and they are based in Surrey. The below card is printed on our CRUSH Grape 250gsm
Above is a more detailed image and hopefully you can see the small specs and inclusions in the paper. Crush is made partly using the residue from the industrial processing of agro-industrial "end of life" products replacing up to 15% of conventional tree pulp. The 15% process residues are combined with 40% recycled fibres (post consumer waste) and the remainder is FSC virgin pulp and the product is FSC certified. The range is produced using green energy and is carbon balanced at the mill gate (we can also supply the paper in the UK, certified as carbon balanced)
The A6 cards are printed and hot foil blocked in-house, where they have letterpress and a 1980's hot foil blocker which is used on cards and envelopes. However, they also sometimes just hand apply gold leaf as you can in the small embellishment below.
The above SIXTEEN TODAY card is printed on our Colorset Storm 270gsm. The beautifully hot foiled envelopes are made using Colorset Storm 120gsm.
...which also have a superb embossing on the flap:
At this time of year, personalised Christmas cards are in great demand and below is an example printed on our CRUSH Kiwi 250gsm.

Thank you to Shannon for sending me this selection and if you would like to see her range of cards and gifts, you can see them HERE.

My thanks to Ian for sending me file copies and I know he is working on other items which he says he will send me...

The Charles Hotel - Munich

Set within the verdant Lenbachgärten quarter and close to the historic Königsplatz, the effortlessly elegant Charles Hotel in Munich is where contemporary style meets traditional Bavarian hospitality. Centrally located by the Alte Pinakothek and the Lenbachhaus, The Charles Hotel also enjoys the calm backdrop of the Old Botanical Garden. Built on the site of a former university library, the hotel was created in 2007 and named in honour of Sir Rocco Forte’s and Olga Polizzi’s father, renowned hotelier Charles Forte.

This the brochure for the hotel, which follows the recent branding by Pentagram.
Size of the brochure is 266x204mm, portrait and is saddle stitched. The cover is an unusual format as there is an 8pp cover with 140mm wide flaps and there is an outer jacket, only 210mm high, also with 140mm flaps. It is the first time I've seen this combination and the effect is superb...
The materials used for the covers is our Dali range, which is a 'felt-marked' paper with a linear effect and a natural, tactile feel. If you click on the image below, you will be able to see the texture in the paper.
The cover is on Dali Nero 200gsm and is hot foil blocked in matt white and copper foil. The jacket is printed on Dali, Candido, 160gsm and is litho printed in CMYK on one side only.
The 16pp text is printed offset litho on our Marazion Ultra 135gsm, chosen because of it's dead matt flatness which would reproduce the interior images well without a glossiness which would detract from the classic look and feel of the hotel.
The brochure has a beautiful, quality feel and flows in the hand superbly. The combination of photography, materials and quality print makes this a wonderful piece of print.

JetCard Welcome Pack

JetCard by Air Partner is ranked as Europe's most flexible jet card programme. A seamless private jet membership programme with fixed hourly rates, guaranteed availability and global reach with as few as 24 hours notice. This is the exquisitely produced welcome pack provided to new members of this exclusive club - people who can legitimately be described as the 'jet-set'.

The welcome pack is a solid 'casebound' folder using our Flaxprint, Litho Printable bookcloth, which is digitally printed with a CMYK image and is also hot foil blocked in copper foil. Size is 230x350mm with a depth of 35mm.
When the folder is opened (see below pic) there is a book and an insert tray on the right hand side.
The book is held in place by the back cover inserted into a internal sleeve fixed on the box as I hope you can see in the image below...
The side tray, which is black foam infill tray, topped with a black Flockage covering. Inserted is a beautiful Smythson luggage tag and a metal membership card made from solid copper.
The book itself is 216mm square and is a 'casebound' hard cover using our Flaxprint, Litho Printable bookcloth, which is digitally printed with a CMYK image and is also hot foil blocked in copper foil (Foilco Ref: 6734).
As stated, both the box and book cover is printed on a very unusual product called Flaxprint. It is a genuine bookcloth which is litho printable, however in this instance it has been successfully digitally printed (for the first time that I'm aware of) using a dry toner, Ricoh C901 digital press. Like all bookcloth, it is one sided, in this case with a lightweight paper reverse, so it can be mounted onto board to form a casebound cover or slipcase ...and as you can see from the images above and below, it works just perfectly.
The 32pp text is digitally printed on Neptune Unique, White 160gsm on an HP Indigo press and is layflat bound, as you can see from the image below...
It looks just perfect.
I must show more about the amazing result on the Flaxprint 74lb cover...

It really is an amazing product. As far as I am aware this is the only genuine bookcloth (as opposed to paper) which is litho printable and also digitally printable (dry toner) offering such amazing versatility. Having the ability to print an image and solid colours on a casebound book on a genuine cloth, rather than a paper alternative, offers a huge range of possibilities.
The fantastic quality of the digital reproduction on this genuine cloth is really impressive...

In comparison with paper, a cloth is much, harder wearing which is why it has been used in this case. The images above and below show the close detail of the weave and print detail,
The excellent print and superb finishing and attention to detail is by Typecast Colour based in Paddock Wood, Kent. The below image shows the welcome pack in a custom white corrugated outer box for courier delivery...

INQUE Bookmarks

Last summer, you may remember that a Kickstarter campaign for a new magazine INQUE, which I wrote about here. INQUE is a large-format annual literary magazine from Dan Crowe and Matt Willey. Dedicated to commissioning and publishing diverse global writing next to extraordinary art, design and photography, with an editorial remit to be creatively groundbreaking. The crowdfunding campaign was hugely successfully and the first issue is due out this October.

In the meantime, they have produced various goodies, T shirts, Tote bags etc and these amazing bookmarks (or should it be bookmarques!)

The size is 77mm x 210mm and they are hot foil blocked on our Sumo, Black 1mm board, so they are very substantial and look great. The invitation is printed on SUMO, which is our a heavyweight, thick board manufactured by FAVINI in Italy. It is available in black and white and the consists of 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm up to a whopping 3mm thick ...seriously chunky! The has also now been extended to include a small range of colours - five new shades all available in 1mm thick.

Design is by Matt Willey. They have been beautifully hot foil blocked in gloss black foil by Identity Print.
I'm not sure what you have to do to get one of these lovely bookmarks, but in the meantime you could subscribe to issue one HERE - it's not too late!

North of Scotland Distilling Co. Folders

Established in 1958 by George Christie, the distillery he built at the foot of Wallace's Monument, was unusual in that it distilled both Malt and Grain Scotch Whisky. Today, North of Scotland Distilling Company is run by his son, Ricky Christie selling a variety of popular brands including Wolf of Badenoch.
This is their beautifully designed and produced presentation folder, although it is hard to do it justice with my limited photographic skills!
The size of the folder is 305 x 217mm, portrait and has a 53mm glued pocket on the inside back cover but the production on the front and back covers is extraordinary...
The logo is hot foil blocked in black gloss foil, while the compass device is hot foil blocked in black matt foil. The coloured crest is printed first with a white ink on the black (printed on a UV equipped waterless litho press) plus CMYK Offset litho on top of the white. The real thing is far better than my images show here.
It is printed on our Blackgold 290gsm which is a range of intense black from the Cordenons range.
The reverse is printed in white - 3 hits, giving an excellent density of white.
The folders really are stunning and it was very kind of Philip Wilson at Love & Humphries to send me a file copy with an explanatory note...
Design is by Alan at Cameron Design Consultants and the folders have been superbly printed and finished by Love & Humphries, who are based in Port Glasgow, Scotland.
