The Monocle Christmas Catalogue

Monocle is a premium media brand with print, audio and online elements, not to mention their ever expanding retail network and on-line business. The Monocle Shop is at street level in six cities - London, Zurich, Merano, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Toronto. The shop keeps everything from luggage and clothes to stationery and furniture and this is their Christmas catalogue from 2019...

The finished size is 216x102mm, portrait and is a 16pp folded format folding out to a flat size of 405x432mm.

The whole publication is all printed offset litho on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm ...and it looks and feels absolutely gorgeous - it flops and folds in a delightful way when handling the publication as I hope these images demonstrate. The below image shows the way it folds.

Print quality is superb as I hope the image below demonstrates, fleshtone reproduction is excellent.
Design is by the team at Monocle. The publication is printed offset litho, CMYK throughout. The excellent print is by Park Communications, who are based in East London.

Resonance 1

The Wapping Project is the creation of the Women's Playhouse Trust which was set up in 1981.

Throughout the 80s and the early 90s WPT’s artistic policy was defined by the playwrights it commissioned, produced and published, predominantly at the Royal Court Theatre, London. In 1993 it began to mount work in one of London’s most beautiful, derelict buildings in the East End, the Wapping Hydraulic Power Station; it is at this point that it became known as The Wapping Project, and established a worldwide reputation. It was always described by its founder and director, Jules Wright, as an idea consistently in transition. I have written about projects from this period on this blog before.

This publication titled 'Resonance 1' features an essay by Gareth Evans together with images by Berlin based photographer Karen Stuke.
Size is 210x148mm (A5) portrait and is saddle stitched. The 4pp cover is printed on Astralux 1 sided 'cast coated' board, which is high gloss one side and uncoated reverse. The cover is debossed and hot foil blocked. The deboss on the front cover just draws you in... 
The below image is taken against the light, so you can see the high gloss...
The 48pp text is printed on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm, which works beautifully. The publication is mainly text but these images by Karen Stuke are large format pinhole images that follow the journey of a Jewish child brought on a Kindertransport from Prague.
For interest the above right hand page is backed up by the image below, which demonstrates the excellent opacity. 
Printed offset litho in CMYK, the 48pp text flops and flows beautifully in the hand...

You can see the black wire used for the staples in this image and you can see them on the outside in the below image. It's a superb detail, a small touch, which works with the hot foil blocking in gloss black foil and makes all the difference.
Using the Offenbach Bible 60gsm means that the total thickness of the 48pp is only 2mm!
Design is by Atelier Dyakova and the creative director is Sonya Dyakova. Printing is by Push and the printing on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm and the finishing is superb.

Passage

This publication titled 'Passage' follows two previous works 'Passage 2013' and 'Passage 1996' It features three pieces of poetry responding to the theme passageby Agnieszka Studzinska, Alia Syed and Heather Phillipson.

Size is 210x148mm (A5) portrait and is saddle stitched. The 4pp cover is hot foil blocked with a large solid panel in red foil (and on back cover). The 48pp text is printed on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm, which works beautifully. The publication is mainly text but the striking design uses the 'show through' to create amazing overlaying patterns.

There are some images to support the text, which are all printed as monotones...
...and there is one double page spread, which is a full out image, which looks fantastic.
Using the Offenbach Bible 60gsm means that the total thickness of the 48pp is only 2mm!
Superb detail is the black coloured wire stitching (staples) a small touch, which makes all the difference. Published in an edition of 600.
Design is by Atelier Dyakova and the creative director is Sonya Dyakova. Printing is by Push and the printing on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm and the finishing is superb.

Fenner Paper 2021 Diary

I am pleased to reveal the Fenner Paper 2021 Diary...
As in previous years, the diary is 230x162mm, portrait and retains the popular 'month to view' format. The cover board is printed offset litho in just one colour - silver pantone colour 877 on both Colorset Charcoal and Colorset Deep Blue 270gsm.
This year the diary has been designed by David Coates, independent designer and board director of ISTD.
The 40pp text is typeset in Foundry Tiento and Foundry Unie from The Foundry Types and is simply printed in one colour, offset litho, on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm, which has a superb opacity and a good writing surface making this an ideal paper for a diary or notebook.

David Magee at the Saatchi Gallery

Last week the Saatchi Gallery hosted the seventh edition of START (now STARTnet) with Parallel Contemporary Art, founded by David and Serenella Ciclitira. STARTnet and the Saatchi Gallery share a passion for discovering new art scenes and emerging artists worldwide provide this dynamic environment for artists, curators, collectors and new enthusiasts to engage with new international talent.
So in these uneasy Covid times, I made a visit to the Duke of York's in Chelsea, where the gallery was very well prepared for social distancing.
I specifically went to see the work of David Magee, who is an Irish artist. He published his twenty-five year retrospective, Oustide in 2017 which won international awards in Paris, New York, Tokyo, and London. I wrote about this award winning publication previously HERE.
This new series of pictures is from his ongoing series Atlantic.
The award winning book, Outside, was published by Concentric Editions and printed in Vivid Colour™ by Boss Print in London (with just a little paper supplied by Fenner Paper). A copy of this award winning book was on display...
“For over 30 years, I have been making photographs Outside. My aim is to provide an antidote to the world we now inhabit, a world of excess, over-branding and mass production. My intention is to offer the viewer a point in time to reflect and be drawn into a world of oneness, contemplation and tranquility. To engage the viewer with the experience of being immersed in the landscape and the spirituality of nature. Earth, Water, Air... are the recurring elements that I work with. It is my relationship with and my interpretation of these elements that forms the basis of my photographs, once I am absorbed in the landscape. The location itself is totally secondary to the feeling. The feeling is everything.”

Concealed Histories

This pioneering special display at the V&A provides insight into the ongoing research into the provenance – or history of ownership – of the Gilbert Collection. In many cases it is unclear who owned these pieces before they were acquired by Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert. This uncertainty can be alarming: between 1933 and 1945 Jewish people in Germany and Nazi-occupied Europe had their possessions systematically taken from them. Art collections were confiscated, sold, scattered or destroyed by the Nazis. Despite significant efforts after the Second World War by the Allies and European governments, many of these objects were never returned to their rightful owners. Instead, many objects ended up in public and private collections, often acquired without knowledge of their background, or whose hands they had passed through. 

Concealed Histories, tells the story of eight Jewish collectors and their families under the Nazis. It is the first of its kind by a UK museum.

This information leaflet features a very long concertina so all eight objects can be viewed. It is a 16pp concertina, the finished size being 150x105mm with a flat size of 838x222mm.

It is printed offset litho in 2 colours - black and gold. The result is really impactful with the gold looking amazing...

The publication is printed offset litho on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm and it looks and feels absolutely gorgeous - it flops and folds in a delightful way when handling the publication as I hope these images demonstrate.
It is printed by London printer PUSH and as you can read in the note below, they were the only printer approached who took the challenge of printing the heavy gold solid and the folding!

The exhibition runs until 10th January 2021, so you have a few months to get there.
