Mastercraft Union

This is the lookbook for the launch collection of clothing brand MasterCraft Union. The collection includes hand-made denim from Japan together with leather from Tuscany. The hand-woven denim is from a family-run mill in Okayama and is finished in the mountains of Shimane. Every season new artisan products will be added from the best master craftsmen around the world.

The publication is a 16pp self cover printed on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm, the lightweight paper works with the Japanese heritage associated with the brand. The size is A5 (210x148mm) portrait and is saddle stitched.
Printed offset litho in CMYK
The booklet is inserted in a 'transparency' bag which completes the retro look and feel of the publication.
Another lovely touch is the use of the black wire stitching.
Art direction and design is by JJ Marshall Associates. Creative Director is Jethro Marshall.

Excellent print and finishing is by Robert Young at R.Young & Son.

Hermès - petit h

Studio Toogood were commissioned by Hermès to launch petit h – a new take on the iconic Hermès brand. The entire ground floor of the flagship Bond Street store was dedicated to a custom-designed Studio Toogood interior including a series of sculptural displays in glossy leather and resin. The widows in the Bond Street showroom displayed scaled up craftsmen's tools in linear neon.

You can read more about the project here: http://studiotoogood.com/work/interiors/herm-s-

Part of the project included some graphic materials which were produced in collaboration with freelance designer Tom Watt (Field Projects). The literature includes an invitation and a poster. In accordance with the campaign theme, photograms of the products and the tools used to create them were created which was used as the imagery for the publications.

The poster is A1 size (841x594mm) and printed in CMYK on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm and the result is simply beautiful. The subject combines beautifully with the lightness and slight translucency of the material.
The invitations are A5 portrait (210x148mm) and are printed on our Omnia 320gsm. This has reproduced the richness of the red and black image perfectly.
Below is a picture of the original Photograms made by Tom Watt with photographic printer Brian Dowling.

Creative director at Studio Toogood is Faye Toogood. Tom Watt is a freelance art director (Field Projects). The invitations and posters are printed by Robert Young at R.Young & Son based in Croydon.

SHOP invitation

This is a lovely invitation that I picked up some file copies of this week. It is A2 size folding down to an A6 finished size. Printed in just two colours (specials - silver and blue) on one side only on our lovely Offenbach Bible. As you can see, the pantone silver 877U, looks great and actually looks metallic silver!
The invitation is to the launch of the new Global Blue website and international shopping guides.
Design is by Steve Fenn and Tom Pollard, at their Clerkenwell based studio: Design by St

The Offenbach Bible 60gsm was printed by R.Young & Son.

Waddesdon Wine

Waddesdon Manor is the historical country seat of the Rothschild family in Buckinghamshire and home to Waddesdon Wine, the official distributor for the Rothschild collection of wines.

This branding project includes a bottle wrap, printed using reproduction maps of the vineyard areas.  The material used was our Offenbach Bible 40gsm, which is light enough to be used as a lightweight, tissue type wrapping material and yet can still be printed offset litho in four colour process.
The identity for Waddesdon Wine was done by Paul Belford Ltd and includes a wide range of printed collateral, including boxes and a brochure and features this W device.

Design and photography is by Paul Belford Ltd with creative direction and photography by Paul Belford and Martin Brown. The Offenbach Bible 40gsm was printed in CMYK by Robert Young at R.Young & Son.

Book - Wrap

Here's an interesting little project that I was able to help out with.

This is Real Art has just published their first book under their new TiRA publishing imprint.

Shibuya by Adam Hinton is a limited edition photo book (500 copies) documenting Japanese commuters at the world's busiest station and intersection: Tokyo's Shibuya. A sequence of 29 portraits revealing both the misery and pressures involved in the daily commute. Case bound in soft grey cloth, the cover has a simple foil embossed graphic from the Japanese 'walk/don't walk' sign, along with the books title in katakana lettering.

Anyway, they wanted something lovely to wrap the book in and after I sent samples, decided that our Offenbach Bible in 40gsm had the right physical properties for folding whilst also having the right feel to go with a publication about Japan, which is a very paper conscious society.

The poster/wrap is printed with a halftone (monotone) image in Pantone 1795 on Offenbach Bible 40gsm. The image forms the inside of the wrap. The plain paper side (outside) which is left white is then stamped with a custom made rubber stamp.

Printing on the Offenbach Bible 40gsm (which isn't every printer's cup of tea!), was beautifully done by Robert Young at R.Young & Son, based in Croydon.
Paul Belford is Creative Director at This is Real Art and Martin Brown is Head of Design.

Macallan Invitation

This is a really beautifully designed and well executed invitation. It's been a difficult one to photograph, so you'll have to go with my description!
This invitation, from Scotch whisky manufacturer Macallan is to a VIP viewing of a exhibition titled "Masters of Photography: A Journey". Albert Watson (awarded the prestigious Royal Photographic Society’s 2010 Centenary Medal) was invited by The Macallan to weave a visual narrative of the long and romantic journey beginning in the bewitching forests of Spain (where the oak for sherry barrels is grown) and ending at The Macallan’s spiritual home in Scotland.

Sitting by the envelope in the picture above, it might look like a fairly standard invitation but it is anything but ordinary.

The finished size of the invitation (as you see it below) is 140x175mm. The printed card is 128x163mm but as you can see from the picture below, it is held in place with two angled die cuts...
...and as you can see below, the card is held into a large format print, folding out to 420x525mm.
The photographic print is printed on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm with the 'mono' image being reproduced in CMYK. The card insert is on Matrisse 250gsm, simply printed in black only and hot foil blocked in silver.

Design is by BOB Design and the designer on the project is Tom Green.

Print, foiling and hand finishing was done by Robert Young at R.Young & Son ...and we (at Fenner Paper) made the bespoke black envelopes (160x195mm) out of Notturno 140gsm.

Thirty-six individually customised bottles of The Macallan dating from 1946, were produced for the project. Each bottle is paired with a signed, one-off, specially commissioned Watson platinum print and will be sold at a reserve price of £10,000! At the private view were David Bailey, Bianca Jagger and Mary McCartney but sadly Justin Hobson was unable to make the event. The exhibition is now touring around the world.

The Rule Book

When someone is made a Freeman of the City of London they are presented with a small book entiltled: Rules for the Conduct of Life. This book was written by a former Lord Mayor, Sir John Barnard (circa 1740).

St Lawrence Jewry is the official Church of the City of London Corporation and ArthurSteenHorneAdamson were commissioned to produce a new design for the publication of this modern version.
Although there is only one book, they produced a series of eleven different coloured dustjackets (8pp) which wrap around the "real" 4pp cover and which makes a set. Each dustjacket is titled differently referring to a particular rule inside. The dustjackets are tint layed, printed in CMYK all on Colorset White 120gsm. The generic 4pp cover is on Colorset Bright Red 270gsm and hot foil blocked in gold metallic foil. The 64pp text (which looks beautiful) is printed on Offenbach Bible 60gsm.  The text was printed as CMY and used PANTONE black 3U as the 4th colour to get the crispest text. The text was printed in four colour, not because there are any pictures or illustrations, the text is all in crisp black and red, but there are some divider pages between sections which again are tint layed solids - they adjusted on press the mix for the divider pages to closely match the dustjackets. The size is A6 portrait. A well thought out and very cost effective solution.
Design is by AthurSteenHorneAdamson. Creative director is Marksteen Adamson, designer was Joe Hole and the project manager was Katy Hudson. The excellent print and production, including foiling, is by R.Young and Sons, based in Croydon. They are one of the few printers who have their own hot foiling machinery.

Although this may seem like a very old fashioned set of rules, they are amazingly pertinent to today's life. Rule 24 looks like it was especially written for me: "If you are very busy, don't panic: sort out the priorities and do one thing at a time". Easy to say, not so easy to do!

Bookmarks

This is a set of Bookmarks which were commissioned by high street and online retailer Urban Outfitters as giveaways (with a purchased book, of course) for their Bookclub.
Size is 185x55mm. They are printed on Omnia 320gsm. Originally Chloé wanted to use our Flockage Litho 300gsm and the job was proofed on that, but given the wide range of different illustrative styles, it worked well on some but not so well on others, so Omnia which gives an uncoated and substantial feel to the bookmarks was chosen as it would work with any of the illustrations.

Design and Art Direction is by Chloé Wolfe-Cowen at Urban Outfitters. They are litho printed in CMYK with a single colour reverse. Print is by R. Young and Son in Croydon.

To see all ten bookmarks and details of the designers/illustrators names, look at www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk/page/bookclub
...and thanks for the note Chloé.
