This latest edition has some really interesting articles including one that is particularly relevant for this very date 12th September - one hundred years ago....

This article is written by Emma Langley of Phoenix Yard Books and is based on her presentation made at the St Bride Conference on book design in September 2013.

 

Illustrator, Stephane Barroux discovered a diary of a French soldier serving in the First World War that was being thrown away. With great ingenuity, he took the diary to his studio and illustrated the soldiers words which resulted as a striking graphic novel (titled: Line of Fire) extracts of which are shown in this article... 

The last entry was 100 years ago today, 12th September 1914.

 

It is not known what happened to the soldier.

There are many other interesting features in the publication, including this comprehensive article written by Dave Farey in the first of a two part article about the typeface Times New Roman and The Times newspaper itself.

Illustration: Making Pictures

A new conference at St Bride's has been announced called Illustration: Making Pictures on 19th June 2012.

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep" Scott Adams

Here's some information about it:
Illustration plays an integral part in many of our design processes – from interpreting the ideas of designers, to bringing to life an author’s words. Free from the constraints of a set brief, illustration can act as an outlet where creative expression can roam freely.

We normally only see the highly polished end result in the pages of a magazine, on a billboard or a jam jar label, but for illustrators this journey starts with ideas; with scribbles and sketches, mistakes and musings.

With the advent of digital technology, we can gain more immediate insight into the story behind the pictures. Illustration can blur the boundaries across design, art, and typography and above all illustration engages, delights and inspires offering a fresh perspective to the world we live in.

There are some great speakers (see pics) coming, it should be an excellent event.

BERG at St Bride

Following the highly successful Critical Tensions conference last November, St Bride Foundation is pleased to welcome Timo Arnall and friends to a talk about the design studio BERG.

"A growing and significant amount of design work takes place in systems, software and electronics. But these technologies are increasingly abstracted and black-boxed, so how can designers engage with these things meaningfully? How might we be involved in developing, critiquing and reflecting upon complex, opaque and invisible technologies?"

"Over the last four years BERG have produced a series of films exploring and explaining emerging technologies, building models and materials for understanding and invention.

Timo Arnall is creative director at the design studio BERG in London and a research fellow at the Oslo School of Architecture & Design. Timo has been making films, designing digital products, and researching emerging technologies for 15 years"

The lecture is on Wednesday 21 March 2012 at 7pm in the Bridewell Hall, St Bride Foundation London EC4.

I have just received my copy of the Summer edition of Ultrabold magazine, which is the Journal of the St Bride Library - if you don't know about St. Brides - see http://www.stbride.org/

St Bride's Conference 2011

Becky Chilcott and John Walters are co-curating the Friends of St Bride Tenth Annual Conference.

The theme of this year’s conference is Critical Tensions and it’s being held on the 10th and 11th November 2011.

They have a fantastic line-up of speakers including Phil Baines, Jonathan Barnbrook, Zoë Bather, Alan Kitching, Gerry Leonidas, Vaughan Oliver, Paul Rennie, Lucienne Roberts, Jack Schulze, Steve Watson, Rebecca Wright and Derek Yates with more names yet to be added.

The objective in holding events at the St. Bride Library is to raise its profile and try to maintain a very real presence in people's creative imaginations rather than it acting as a profit making exercise, so the conference is reasonably priced.

New Ultrabold
