Jobs from the past - Number 172

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by - this project is from nine years ago.

GSA x Drygate 2015

Drygate Brewing Company is a craft brewery based in the east end of Glasgow and they celebrated their first birthday on May 29th 2015 marking the occasion with a small-batch birthday brew. Working with D8, who had also created the brand identity and packaging for Drygate's core range of beers, they partnered up with graduates of The Glasgow School of Art to create beautiful hand-wrapped, individually designed and signed packaging.
The six Glasgow School of Art alumni are: Fran Caballero; Rae-Yen Song, Isabella Widger, Paul Flynn Brady, Alice Hoskins and Matthew Bainbridge.
D8 worked to create unique packaging that would also reflect Drygate’s philosophy and values. The brewery believes in open, fearless brewing to achieve the exceptional, and the spirit of collaboration has always been one of their main characteristics.
There were 350 editions of six hand-signed artworks. Each is printed offset litho onto our Offenbach Bible 60gsm. The sheets are then hand wrapped around the 750ml bottles, sealed with a branded roundel and a tag held with string is tied to the neck of the bottle to secure the wrap.

The project was featured on the packaging design website the Dieline ...
"The idea is perfect for a birthday beer, allowing beer enthusiasts to open the gift of an amazing brew! The illustrations used on the “wrapping paper” are incredibly special and unique, coming from artists in the community, and they offer variety and individuality among the limited amount of this exclusive libation. The concept can also expand and be used for future brews, utilizing the same bottle style and different artworks, designs, and ideas for the outer wrapping"

Offenbach Bible is the perfect paper for this project, as it is light enough to be easily wrapped around a bottle, has an almost 'tissuey' feel and yet prints amazingly.

Creative direction and design is by D8 and the project was handled by Stephen Cappello. The bottle wraps are printed by J Thomson Colour printers, based in Glasgow.

All in all this is a most engaging piece of branding and packaging. A superb creative solution, beautifully executed and printed.

This is one of the most innovative and beautiful projects to have appeared on the blog so far this year ...in my opinion!

D8

D8 is a creative agency based in Glasgow and Birmingham and I've worked with them over the last couple of years on some projects (...yes, even though we are based in the 'soft' South East!). This  project is for themselves and is the first issue of their own self published biannual magazine. It is a cracking job but has proved very hard for us to photograph! - especially the cover (below) which has a very unconventional wrap which is folded back on itself to give three equal vertical strips and then folded over the top and bottom of the front cover - I hope with that description, you can make it out...
Now I want to point out that this is actually a magazine and not a promo brochure trying to look like a magazine. There are some extra pages showing their work, but there are 36pp of solid editorial, including an excellent article by Adrian Carroll - "Is Apple killing design?"

Now from a paper point of view it does break my personal three paper rule, which is "never use more than three materials in a job unless there's a really good reason" In this case there is a good reason because of the way the materials have been broken up to work with specific subjects and the gloss coated as half page width dividers etc. To give you a quick run through, Cover: Omnia 280gsm Text: Brand X FSC, Starfine White 115gsm, Redeem 100% Recycled (also for the wrap) and Concorde Pure Brilliance 135gsm.

The print, which I have to say is excellent, is by Hay Nisbet Press in Glasgow.

Design was by everyone at D8! ...but I worked specifically with Stephen Cappello on the project - and thank you for the lovely note...

Tactical A.U. Identity

Here's a lovely new piece of identity work by D8 in Glasgow. Tactical A.U. is a new artists support and ‘creative realization’project which aims to develop, support and advance the artistic ambitions of Scottish based artists both here in the UK and abroad as well as continue to work with some of the most exciting and challenging artists in Europe.
The letterheads are on Colorset Ash 120gsm, printed 1 colour litho and "Microdot foil". The business cards are on Trojan Whiteback 400gsm with black foil and 'Microdot' foil and 3mm forme cut radius corners.

This is a really good example of mixing materials with great effect. With many of projects I work on, people are obsessed about having everything matching (including self ashesive labels!) Sometimes this is necessary but quite often if the identity is strong enough, mixing the materials used can be a really positive asset to the identity.

First Light

My e-mail announcing the blog has attracted a few responses, including this package of items from Keith and Andy at d8 (Birmingham and Glasgow).

This is the literature from a new identity that they have designed for an organisation called First Light based in Birmingham. As you can see, it's a nice crisp identity using two strong colours (solids are printed on the reverse)

Also in the package was a copy of the A5 Annual Review which has striking graphics and printed using black and two fluoro colours. All the literature is printed on our 100% recycled Colorset (Natural) 120gsm










I don't know who the printer was, but they've made a very nice clean job of it.


And of course it's lovely to get a hand written note - which is not only a nice thank you but is beautifully produced - foiled in one colour ALSO on Colorset (Solar) 120gsm. Thank you Keith and Andy in Birmingham ...
