GardaPat 13 ...have you seen it?

Fenner Paper became the exclusive UK distributor of a coated paper range called GardaPat 13 back in 2018. Although new to us, it wasn't a new paper, it has been produced for many years (decades even!) and is the top rated paper for use in the production of high quality photographic books by the well known publishers in Switzerland, Germany and Italy.

The paper is manufactured by Cartiere del Garda, a paper mill on the shore of Lake Garda in northern Italy.
New Gardapat 13 swatch
So what makes GardaPat 13 different to other coated paper?

To make it easy, I've summarised it in three points here:
  1. It is a genuine, dead flat matt finish.
  2. The "13" means it has a 1.3 bulk, so it feels much, much thicker than other coated papers.
  3. It comes in three shades, KLASSICA, KIARA and BIANKA
Simple as that, it's beautiful paper!

Gardapat BIANKA is the whitest shade in the range. The original KLASSICA has the warmest shade with KIARA having a more neutral white shade. Contrary to popular belief, studies show that using a higher white paper does not improve colour reproduction, so using a neutral white paper actually increases the colour gamut! Using a sophisticated and warm paper is pleasant for the eye to read and perfect for use both in literature for the arts and luxury brands. Both KLASSICA and KIARA are made without the use of Optical Brightening Agents (OBA’s)

The weight range is from 90gsm and goes up to 250gsm (Bianka only up to 150gsm). Now many of you reading this may be thinking 250gsm isn't heavy enough but you would be wrong! This 250gsm is 325microns thick. To put it into context a normal printers 'house silk' in 300gsm is only 280microns! ...therefore GardaPat 250gsm is as bulky as a 350gsm silk!

Michael Angove for Jo Malone

Jo Malone is a London based company renowned for British bespoke fragrances for Women, Men and the Home. Michael Angove who specialises in refined highly detailed chinoiserie wallpaper has created exquisite, bespoke designs for Jo Malone London inspired by Blackberry & Bay and Orange Blossom. This is the literature for this limited edition home collection.
The 8pp, self cover, booklet is 150mm square and is saddle stitched. Reflecting the tactile, natural subject matter, the paper chosen is Modigliani Candido 260gsm - it is a feltmarked paper with a texture reminiscent of a watercolour paper.
The reproduction of these softly rendered images on the Modigliani is just right, while the inside back spread (below) reflects the style of the brand packaging in a signature cream box with black corners - packaging which defines quality and an understated style.
Art direction and design is by the Jo Malone design team. Print production is by CPI Colour.

PRS for Music

The  Performing Right Society, now PRS for Music, was founded in 1914 to collect fees for live performances of sheet music. They are now a society of around 11,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers, representing their rights and by licensing.

PRS for Music pays royalties to members when their work is performed, broadcast, streamed, downloaded, reproduced, played in public or used in film and TV.

This brochure has been produced to explain the organisation, the way it works and give examples with case studies.
The size of the publication is 160x225mm, landscape and is perfect bound. The 4pp cover is on Marazion Ultra 250gsm and the 38pp text is on 135gsm.

Marazion Ultra was chosen mainly because of it's matt flatness. The vast majority of the text is dominated by the wonderful illustrations by Tane Williams and therefore to work in sympathy with illustrations, this wonderfully matt paper was chosen. This would reproduce the artworks well without a glossiness which can often detract from the images. Marazion Ultra is a simple but effective choice of materials.

The 38pp text is printed offset litho on our Marazion Ultra 135gsm, which is a bulky sheet and gives the publication a spine of 4mm, although as you can see from the below image it flows really nicely.
Design is by Cai and Kyn, a studio based in Epsom in Surrey. The superb illustrations are by Tane Williams

Print and production is by Richline based in London with Darren Risley handling the production.

Ukraine - Make a difference NOW!

I'm sure most of us working in the graphic arts industry, whether a designer, printer or paperperson have wondered if there is anything positive that we can do to help with the Ukrainian-Russian war ...well now there is!

An article appeared in PrintWeek yesterday which highlights a global paper manufacturer who is still producing paper in Russia. The company is called Mondi and are one of the largest paper and packaging companies in the world with manufacturing facilities and offices all around the world including facilities in Russia which employ 5,300 people.

In my opinion we should all be putting Mondi under pressure to suspend production in Russia. It is only by large corporates like Mondi (turnover £5.5 Billion!) exerting pressure such as this on the  Russian Government that could make a difference. It will affect the Russian economy and also get more people in Russia talking about the situation.

I have been racking my brains as to any contribution that I can make to this struggle and here (thanks to PrintWeek) there is something that all of us in the graphic arts can do!

Firstly, please email the CEO and Chairman of the Mondi Group (who I believe are both based in their Surrey headquarters)

CEO is: andrew.king@mondigroup.com

Chairman is: philip.yea@mondigroup.com

Jenny Hampshire is the Company Secretary and is listed as the Governance contact: jenny.hampshire@mondigroup.com

https://www.mondigroup.com/en/

Please email these people - get everyone you know to email them asking them "as a global leader in paper and packaging we ask you to demonstrate real leadership and suspend production at your sites in Russia" Flood their email boxes - PLEASE

Please use twitter, facebook, instagram and whatever social media you can to get the message across.

Secondly you can boycott Mondi products. Stop buying, specifying or using any Mondi products until they suspend their activities in Russia. In printing/graphics you may be familiar with their brands Color Copy, Nautilus Recycled and Pergraphica. Color Copy is the largest brand used in offices and copy shops and seen everywhere.

If you are a printer - tell your paper merchant you won't be buying a Mondi product until they have suspended operations in Russia. If you are a designer or project manager, make sure you don't specify any of their products. If you are in packaging, make sure that packaging is not being supplied by Mondi. Antalis is one of the large Mondi distributors in the UK.

This is something we can all do which might just help a bit - it won't take much time to do ...and if you don't think you've got time, just imagine you've heard gunfire outside your window - that's what it's like for those poor people in Ukraine right now, so spend 5 minutes of your time and send some emails - it might just make a difference.

You can read the story in PrintWeek here: https://www.printweek.com/news/article/mondi-updates-on-ukraine-russia

Please note: I have nothing against Mondi. This is not personal. We have worked with Mondi in the past and they are a very nice company to work with - but they are in the situation where they can make a difference, so we must tell them!

UPDATE on 4th March - article in The Times https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/c1855f14-9afd-11ec-8194-a993851c15ba?shareToken=84ac5bf545ddd88bda72c70ddc58cda3

PS - for comparison, there is another global paper company called StoraEnso (interestingly some people consider Stora Enso to be the oldest limited liability company in the world having been incorporated in 1288!). Stora Enso is stopping all production and sales in Russia until further notice due to the ongoing invasion in Ukraine. Good for them! You can read more HERE

Jobs from the past - Number 148

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this one is from 2014...

Bristol Coffee Map 2014
The Bristol Coffee Map is a project instigated by Bristol based Studio Baum ...produced in celebration of coffee, Bristol and the art of print design.
The studio worked with a team of coffee aficionados over 9 months touring Bristol’s cafés and meeting the city’s talented baristas. The final result is this beautifully produced piece of tactile print.
The size of the map is 350x487mm folding down to175x122mm. It is produced on CRUSH, Coffee 120gsm from FAVINI, made using up to 15% residues from agro-industrial processes, recycled fibres and FSC fibres. Read more about Crush here: https://justinsamazingworldatfennerpaper.blogspot.com/2020/04/crush-truly-sustainable-paper.html
The map itself is printed offset litho in silver with an overprint silk-screened in turquoise. The project is illustrated in by a local Bristol illustrator Naomi Wilkinson - illustrations are just superb.

Design and production is by Sam Baum at Studio Baum. You can read more about it here:
Print is by Zone Graphics, based in Paddock Wood in Kent.

ARKET

ARKET is a modern-day market offering essential products for men, women, children and the home. ARKET’s mission is to democratise quality through widely accessible, well-made, durable products, designed to be used and loved for a long time. ARKET opened its first store on Regent Street, London and this is the launch invitation...
Size of the invitation is 148x105mm, which is concertina folded out to a finished size of 592x420mm. Below is a birds eye view...
The invitation is printed offset litho on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm ...and it looks and feels absolutely superb - it flops and folds in a delightful way when handling as I hope these images demonstrate. The above image shows the way it concertina's from top to bottom.
First fold, which concertina's out to 148x420mm
Fully unfolded to form a 32pp broadsheet...
The invitation is printed in just black, offset litho on one side only, although you might just be able to see ARKET as a shadow in the top quarter, which I hope you will be able to see better in the pictures below...
It is a very subtle effect, so how is it created? …the white letters are silkscreen printed by K2 Screen. Mathias Clottu worked with Mark Jenkins at K2 to create a bespoke white colour to match the tone of Offenbach Bible -  a pure white silkscreen would have been too visible. The below image shows the silkscreened reverse.
The below image shows how it looks with light behind it, although it was the subtlety of the matching white shade that was required and which works so beautifully on the finished piece...
Design is by Mathias Clottu Studio. Litho printing is by Xtraprint, silkscreen is by K2 Screen and it was concertina folded by ABS Finishers.

Private View Invitation - John Eskenazi

John Eskenazi is one of the most internationally respected dealers in Indian, Gandharan, Himalayan and South-east Asian works of art. He is also a specialist in collectors' carpets and textiles.

This is the invitation to view the latest acquisitions.
The invitations are A5, portrait and are particularly thick and prestigious having been mounted onto our Construction Blackstone 1500microns, making the total thickness nearly 2mm.
The invitations have been printed on an HP Indigo digital press and this is interesting as it's the first time that I have seen a genuine duotone (just two colours) printed on an HP Indigo, rather than out of four colours
Design and Art Direction is by Ornan Rotem at Sylph Editions.

Printing and the terrific finishing - which was all achieved in house is by Zone Graphics, based in Paddock Wood in Kent.
