Updated Inclusion range...

Up-Cycling is an increasing trend in the paper industry. This means using waste materials, destined to be thrown away, to create new and valuable objects. Here, we value up-cycling and strongly believe reprocessing raw materials is of great importance to us all, as it will be even more so in the future! Two great examples are grass paper – made from grass waste – and coffee paper – made from coffee waste.

We have an updated swatch showing the range:
Inclusion Coffee has a totally unique look and the obviously recycled character make it the perfect material for both packaging and printing applications that stand out. Upcycled coffee waste and 100% post-consumer recycled paper fibres give it a spectacular visual effect and an overtly recycled character. It has 5% residues from coffee processing added during the papermaking process. This content is comprised of coffee peel, which falls during coffee roasting and is sourced locally to the mill from facilities in Holland and Germany. 
Inclusion Coffee is now available in 100, 120 250 and 350gsm. It is made using 100% recycled, post consumer waste, with the addition of 5% residues from coffee processing, the resulting effect is really unusual as you can see from the image below (biro in shot for scale!) and every sheet is unique.
Inclusion Grass (below pic) contains 30% sun-dried grass and 70% post-consumer recycled paper fibres and is available in 120gsm text weight only...
The sun-dried grass is sourced from fallow land – which is left unplanted for a season resulting in a fast-growing raw material, protecting natural resources and the environment. The grass is turned into pellets which requires less energy, water and chemicals than the production of woodpulp. The grass pellets are produced in Germany ensuring short delivery to European paper mills, reducing CO2 emissions.

As you can see from the images above, the extraordinary use of these inclusions combined with 100% Recycled fibres ensure that every sheet of paper is truly unique - so be warned, the visual effect can and will vary from batch to batch!

Colorset has 37 shades

For those of you not familiar with Colorset, it is our range of coloured text and cover papers which is 100% recycled and more competitively priced than some other well known brands of coloured paper!

A few years ago we launched 350gsm, so we now have ALL Colorset shades in 120gsm, 270gsm and 350gsm - all in B1 size (700x1000mm). 
A few years ago we further developed the range with 9 new colours, making this a collection of 37 shades.
The new shades include five light shades and three deep shades. The new shades are Blush, Warm White*, Glacier, Storm, Nautic, Hopsack*, Charcoal*, Spearmint* and Deep Blue (Note: four of the new shades with an asterisk* are virgin fibre)
...so there you have it, a range with 37 colours including SEVEN greys!

Blue Angel Certification

 Last week our new 'Blue Angel' certification arrived...

Fenner Paper has been certified for many years and I am often telling people about the Blue Angel mark as here in the UK, it is hardly known about or recognised, whereas in Germany (where it was established) and in mainland European countries, it is both highly visible on products and very highly regarded.

The Blue Angel (Der Blaue Engel) is a German certification for products and services that have environmentally friendly aspects. The Blue Angel mark is the oldest ecolabel in the world, and it covers some 10,000 products in some 80 product categories!

It was originally conceived and put in place by the government of the former West Germany and has been awarded since 1978. The Environmental Label Jury (Jury Umweltzeichen) is an independent, decision-making body for the Blue Angel and includes representatives from environmental and consumer associations, trade unions, industry, the trade, crafts, local authorities, academia, the media, churches, young people and the German federal states. As a result, it isn't open to political interference, industry pressure groups or vested interests, either from industry or the fanatical green groups. This is the reason that I rate the scheme so highly and it frustrates me that the UK government has never had the guts to put such an independent system in place in the UK - equally it's a shame that there isn't a pan European system.
The award of the Blue Angel is preceded by a review of the entire life cycle of the products. Such review considers as many aspects of environmental and health protection as possible for the respective product. Subsequently, the criteria limit or rule out those environmental impacts which are considered to be the most important impacts for the respective product. The Basic Award Criteria for a product are specified for each product group and they are all published.

The Blue Angel covers a wide range of different products including paints, gardening products, construction, electronics and many more, including paper and board.

We carry products which have been awarded the Blue Angel mark. The Creative Print range of 100% recycled text & cover paper manufactured by Koehler Greiz mill carries the Blue Angel mark, as do the majority of the recycled colours in our Colorset range.You can read more about the scheme here:

PEACE – Anthony Burrill for War Child

The Private Press have collaborated with Anthony Burrill to produce a poster to raise funds for War Child UK. The first two print runs sold out, selling 250 so far meaning they have raised £12,500 for War Child.
Due to overwhelming demand they are now printing another 100 prints and they will be posted in the first week of April. 100% of sales of this print go directly to charity.

In the last week more than 1 million people have fled across the Ukrainian border with many more expected to come. War Child have been quick to respond – their teams are already on the ground working to understand the impact in children and get them vital aid and psychological care – fast. From 1 March – 31 May 2022, War Child are running their ‘Unlock a Generation’ appeal in which donations will be matched pound for pound by the UK Government. 

This means the purchase of a print right now could go twice as far. Your donation will help support the unfolding crisis in Ukraine, as well as places like Afghanistan, and match funding from the UK government will go towards Yemen, where millions of children are still in desperate need of protection from war and conflict. 

The print measures 50x70cm and is signed by Anthony in an open edition, and features black ink printed by hand onto Shiro Echo, White 250gsm a 100% recycled paper.

Jobs from the past - Number 129

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this publication is from 2016.
 
Money Talks - The Great Swindle by Santiago Montoya

In February 2016, contemporary Colombian artist, Santiago Montoya, presented Money Talks at the Halcyon Gallery, London, which incorporated his mid career museum retrospective The Great Swindle. Montoya reinterprets paper currency as both a canvas as well as a raw material, exploring the added value beyond its very surface. Montoya’s use of money as an artistic medium, also opens a dialogue on the void between state propaganda and reality itself.
This is the literature which presents the work of Santiago Montoya by the Halcyon Gallery in collaboration with AMA (Art Museum of the Americas) in Washington ...and yes, it looks like a bundle of cash!
This wonderfully deceptive design is actually 48pp folded broadsheet. It is concertina folded vertically and horizontally. The flat size is 398x625mm folding down to 157x65mm and gives the 'wad' of notes a thickness off 4mm. The below image reveals the reverse side.

For would be forgers out there, you will be interested in knowing that this piece of literature is printed on Redeem 100% Recycled 80gsm and is printed offset litho, CMYK on both sides and as you can see from the detail image below the print result is excellent. Redeem is an uncoated paper with a wonderfully neutral tone that somehow gives a lot to the right publication.
The paper band or what is called a "currency strap" in the US, around a 'wad' of notes which is around 4mm thick, finishes the deception perfectly.
Design is by the team at the Halcyon Gallery and the printing and finishing is by Push Print based in London with Anthony Dearlove handling the project.

Community Clothing 03

Founded by British Fashion Designer Patrick Grant, Community Clothing is a social enterprise with a simple mission - to make excellent quality affordable clothes for men and women, to create great jobs for skilled workers and by doing this help to restore real pride in Britain’s textile communities. They do this by working with under utilised UK factories during their quiet periods. What a wonderful concept.

This is Community Clothing's lookbook and catalogue and it is an absolutely superb publication, wonderful art direction, photography and printing.
 
The size is 330x230mm, portrait and is a 32pp self cover which flops and rolls really nicely in the hand....
The publication is printed on our Shiro Echo, White 90gsm which is 100% Recycled and also carries the FSC Recycled classification.

Shiro Echo is available in two shades; there is a white shade (which is a natural/off white) with a newspapery looks and feel and a Bright White shade too.
Centre spread is a map showing the locations in the UK where the factories are located.
