Paul Smith S|S 2013

This is the gorgeous Spring/Summer look-book for Paul Smith. As you might expect from such a design lead retailer, this piece of literature is produced to the very highest standard with superb art direction, photography and print reproduction.

This look-book is A4, portrait, saddle stitched with a 4pp cover and 28pp text. The material chosen is our Omnia (280gsm and 150gsm) which gives it that dead matt, tactile feel but with great reproduction.
Art Direction, design and production is by Aboud Creative. The piece has a fantastic feel - solid flat areas of deep, dark blue work fantastically well. Lots of white space, giving the publication an airy spacious feel - it is difficult for me to say too much more about it - see the images below, they speak for the job...
...and here's the plug for the paper!  - As you can see from these images, there is lots of colour and images with CMYK dark areas - loads of ink going down and it looks great on the Omnia, reproducing bright vibrant colours, whilst retaining detail in the dark areas (in my opinion- but I would say that wouldn't I?)
The art direction is by Alan Aboud  and the quality of the direction and photography (by Neil Bedford) is matched by the exceptional printing by Chapter Press.

Duchamp SS|2012

Duchamp is a curiously British brand, tracing it's roots back to the late 80's as a luxury goods business concentrating on mens accessories. The founder named the company after the French surrealist artist Marcel Duchamp and the company is now owned and run by former Mulberry executive, Marc Psarolis.

The Spring Summer 2012 lookbook is designed and produced by London based creative agency, Exposure. The size of the book is 232x170mm, portrait, perfect bound. The 44pp text is printed on our Omnia 150gsm and works brilliantly with the, light, bright and beautifully detailed photography - a lovely piece of printing. The 4pp cover is on a black board (of unknown origin!) and is hot foil blocked in gloss black foil.
Alison Psarolis is Design Director at Duchamp. Art Direction and design is by Exposure. Print and print production is by Chapter Press.

The Guide to Hondaness

This is a really well thought out piece of literature produced by Wieden + Kennedy for Honda. This guide takes the reader through the Honda way of doing things, referencing the company's founder and past president, Soichiro Honda.
The publication is 197x210mm, maling it just slightly Landscape and is section sewn. It has a 4pp cover and 40pp text and is printed on our Avebury Recycled Wove (50% Recycled) 250gsm cover and 170gsm text. Avebury was chosen because it is part recycled, has FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accreditation and has a lovely tactile feel, due in part to a small amount of rag (cotton) fibres used in it's manufacture.
There are also a couple of really tricksy bits of print finishing, featuring duplexed text pages so that a lift up flap (bonnet) can be lifted up. Difficult to do, but perfectly executed.
Designed by Wieden + Kennedy in London. Print and the excellent finishing is by Chapter Press, handled by Jonathan Savory.

Soho House Berlin

Soho House opened their doors in May 2010 at No. 1 Torstrasse in Mitte, Berlin. The building was originally opened in 1928 as department store Jonas & Co and has since been put to a  succession of uses including government offices. The latest addition to this gleaming white eight storey Bauhaus period building are 20 new short let luxury apartments.

London based design studio, Material Organisation, were commissioned to create a launch package for the new apartments. Their design and use of materials reflects the diverse history of the building, turning the utilitarian plans from function to form and utilising the substrates of record keeping to luxury packaging
Size of the brochure is 168x205mm, portrait. It has a 4pp cover with a 20pp text and an additional 12pp of A6 inserts and is singer sewn with complementary orange thread. The text is printed on our Omnia 120gsm which has worked beautifully with the excellent interior photography. The colours are fantastically rich and there's so much life in the images of the interiors - which as we all know is about having a great original, the good repro and print with the right paper.
The cover is a light brown manilla file board from that other, Hull based, paper merchant!
Design is by the creative team at Material Organisation. Creative Director is Sam Wilson. Thanks to Rosy for sending me some copies and a lovely note.
Print and the excellent finishing, including the 'singer sewing' is by Chapter Press.

FASHION | SPACE | GALLERY

This is a brochure produced for the London College of Fashion as part of their 'Fashion the Future' mission. This particular brochure is about the Fashion Space Gallery and shows the plans of the proposed renovation of the Oxford Circus based gallery.
Size is a very pleasing 345x245mm. It is a 16pp self cover, portrait, saddle stitched format. Printed on Matrisse 140gsm the design, size and format combined with the material just gives this job a beautiful feel - lots of white space and an uncluttered feel, reflecting the actual gallery space itself.

Defining Luxury

The old expression that you can't judge a book by it's cover, gets disproved time an time again on this blog! Here is an example where the cover totally sets the tone and quality for the text.
'Defining Luxury' is a book of case studies, produced to demonstrate how Conran Design Group works with Luxury brands and is therfore intended to impress, which it does very well.

The publication is 210x285mm, portrait. The cover, which is the star of the piece, is hot foil blocked in white gloss foil and metallic silver foil and as you can see from the pictures below, it is simply stunning.
One of the really important things to draw your attention to is the way that the cover is formed. Essentially it is an 8pp cover, with the flaps folding on the outside rather than on the inside. There is grey, cloth binding tape along the spine and the flaps are glued down forming a really solid cover, which almost has the solidity of a casebound book. The material used for the cover is our Matrisse 350gsm which is uncoated, has an exceptionally high bulk and embosses and foils beautifully - as you can see!
Spine detail
The 40pp text is printed on a 'house' coated silk but is singer sewn which again, gives the book a quality feel (and allows the pages to lay relatively flat)

Creative Director on the project is Lee Hoddy and the designer on the project is Tom Mesquitta. Print and exceptional finishing and foiling is by Chapter Press.
