Paper leaves...

At present, there aren't many good news stories in retail, however today (yes, today!) the US fashion and lifestyle brand Anthropologie opened a new store in the ancient university city of Cambridge. Anthropologie was founded in Pennsylvania, in 1992 and now operates over 230 stores worldwide, 15 of which are in the UK.

For the opening of the new store, the Anthropologie windows and interior of the store were dressed in bright Spring/Summer leaves which were all laser cut using Fenner Paper! We supplied a mixture of our Stardream (pearlescent board) and our Colorset 100% Recycled board - which were laser cut by Patternise and then hand assembled by Anthropologie’s window display team into these beautiful displays. The result is simply amazing - and plastic free!

The materials were chosen after testing the board for lasercutting at the studio. Patternise are based in Cranleigh, Surrey, specialising in creative design and laser-cutting services. They work with a wide range of clients across the UK - managing large volume projects for major corporates and visual merchandisers to smaller projects for individuals and weddings. Patternise use state of the art laser cutters and they specialise in cutting “clean” materials such as fine papers, cards, and plastics.
Here are detail images of the leaves. The shapes are produced using their "super pulsed" Trotec galvo system (GS1000), which enables extremely high-speed laser cutting and high volume paper finishing. Using this system they are able to cut many 1000's of sheets within very quick time-frames, which would be impossible with conventional lasers.
With thanks to the team at Anthropologie for the images and to Rob at Patternise for the technical information.

Charleston Press No. 3

Nestled in the South Downs, Charleston was the country meeting place for the writers, painters and thinkers known as the Bloomsbury group. Now run by the Charleston Trust, the house is an excellent museum and visitor attraction, presented to look as it did when the family lived there in the 1950's. The walled garden was created by the artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant to designs by Roger Fry and features Mediterranean influences with plants chosen for their intense colour and silver foliage. These became the subject of many works over their long residence at Charleston.

Published by the Charleston Trust, the Charleston Press includes includes newly commissioned essays exploring the themes, artists and stories of the exhibitions and programmes at Charleston, as well as articles marking important Bloomsbury anniversaries and events. This is the third edition.
Size is 220x170mm, portrait and is perfect bound. The publication has an 8pp 'dustjacket' around the cover as you can see from the birdseye image below...
The below image shows the book (with the Colorset Mango cover) out of the dustjacket (100mm flaps) plus the wrap-around belly-band.
The 4pp cover, which is secreted under the dustjacket, is produced on our Colorset Mango (100% Recycled) 270gsm and is unprinted, being simply, but beautifully, debossed.
The 96pp text is printed offset litho on our Omnia 120gsm. Omnia was chosen because it would beautifully reproduce the wide variety of different media, the artworks, solid colours and dark photography and most importantly feel special - with the reproduction that you would expect on a silk or gloss but with a natural tactile uncoated feel
The majority of this issue is dedicated to articles about the Omega Workshops, based in Fitzroy Square, London in the early 20th Century. An exhibition about the Omega workshops was hosted in the galleries at Charleston.
A chapter titled 'Shy radishes' shows some of the Charleston ceramics in use with superbly photographed still life images

The wrap around bellyband (70mm high) which tucks into the book, is printed on our Sixties 60gsm and because of the translucency, the background image shows through beautifully.
Below image shows the 8mm spine, the perfect binding. The jacket is printed on Omnia 150gsm.
The reproduction on the Omnia is just something else, the level of detail and reproduction is superb as you can see the image below.
The publication is designed by Playne Design who have studios in London and Hastings. Creative Director is Clare Playne. Print production is by Pureprint. Like the first edition, this is an excellent example of a beautifully designed and well executed piece of print, entirely right for the subject. The publication is available for sale (at a very reasonable £5) HERE

Pantone colours for 2021

Pantone has named two colours as its colour of the year for 2021 - Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, an "optimistic" hue of yellow. Pantone believes that the pairing of shades will help people "fortify themselves with energy, clarity and hope" in a world that's set to face increasing uncertainty - sounds good to me!
...and it got me thinking that we had two pretty similar shades in out Colorset range - Lemon and Ash:
...and they are also, both 100% recycled!

Our Colorset range has 36 shades, which you can read about HERE
If you would like to see the range, just email me for a swatch - justin@fennerpaper.co.uk

I Love Halloween...

Love Poppet is a card publisher based in the Kent countryside, just outside Canterbury. Established by Claire Vincent, Love Poppet specialises in bespoke papercut cards and this pumpkin delight is a wonderful card made using our Colorset 100% Recycled board. What better way for me to wish you all a happy Halloween...
The above image shows the inside of the paper Pumpkin card and is simply AMAZING!
The above image shows the outside including the clever stalk. It's hard to give the exact size as it is such an irregular shape, however it fits inside a C5 envelope.

The card is made using our Colorset Mango 270gsm, which is a 100% recycled board and is a vibrant orange shade. Below shows the birdseye view which reveals the inner workings of the construction.
The card is silkscreen printed in 3 colours.

You can see more of Claire's creations here and you can buy them on Not On The High Street and Etsy. With best wishes for a spooky and scary Halloween, especially in these strange times.

The new year starts here...

It might only be October, but the clever new 2020/2021 calendar from Healeys Printers starts now and runs through to December next year. This way you can look ahead and plan without the disruption of changing calendars in January - a very clever idea!
Healeys are based in Ipswich and are one of a handful of printers who are registered as a 'Carbon Balanced Printer' by the World Land Trust and can offer a totally carbon balanced printing service including the paper and all aspects of production and delivery.
The desk calendar is wiro-bound onto a 'tent' card, as you can see below...
The size of each of the calendar leaves is 155x180mm and each month is printed on a different board - each is a recycled or environmentally friendly grade. Not all the papers used are from Fenner Paper, but we are fortunate enough to have our papers used for October (Shiro Alga Carta) January (Flora Anice) and February (Colorset Sandstone)
The calendar incorporates many different printing and finishing processes, including Litho, digital, hot foiling, embossing with CMI Foiling producing the embossing and foiling techniques. On each page, there is information about the paper and the printing technique...
The calendar is designed and illustrated by Maze Media.

To receive one of these superb calendars, contact Healeys directly and I'm sure they will be happy to send you one ...but you'd better hurry! info@healeys-printers.co.uk

Crush 03

Crush is a beer 'zine, which is an ongoing side project for design and branding studio O Street. The project allows the studio to combine a bunch of things they love: illustration, print, design and beer!

The focus of issue 3 is 'women in beer'. Historically, brewers were primarily women, until many were targeted as witches and this subject provides a rich seam of content for illustration ...perfect, as we are only a few weeks from Halloween!
The size of the zine is 297x105mm, portrait and is saddle stitched. There is a 4pp cover printed on our Colorset (100% Recycled) Amethyst 270gsm with a 32pp text on our Crush Corn 100gsm, which is made using 15% residues from the processing of corn plus recycled and FSC fibres. You can read about it here.
There are articles about six beers, breweries and women in brewing, all beautifully and wittily illustrated.
There is also photography but you might have noticed that the images have an unusual look. The reason is that this 'zine is 'Riso' printed as all good zines are! If you aren't familiar with Riso printing, you can read about it here. Image reproduction is quite crude as it is a monotone with a coarse screen but the result is really unique and characterful and the illustrations have a wonderful quality to them.
The below image shows all the illustration spreads, all printed 2 colour Riso - SUPERB!
The project was co-ordinated by Jonny Mowat at O Street and my thanks to him for sending me file copies...
The zine is Riso printed and saddle stitched by Good Press who are based in the centre of Glasgow and they really have made a beautiful job of it.
