Jobs from the past - Number 153

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by...

The 58th "Not DeAd yet" - The Bootleg Annual 2020 

In 2020, D&AD announced that they would not be printing the paper annual for the first time ever. However, creative team Rhys Hughes and Barret Helander, who work together in London decided to produce a few copies for themselves and the idea just grew resulting in an unofficial dodgy knock-off of the 58th annual...
In their words...
"That huge mysterious book, made by creatives for creatives, to celebrate and inspire creativity. 2020 was finally going to be our year, but just as we were getting our bookshelves ready, the announcement came. The annual was going digital. There are so many great reasons to make the annual available online. It connects creatives all over the world with an infinitely inspirational archive, that tucks neatly away in a tab. The digital annual is a good thing, there’s no doubting that. But do the book and the website have to be mutually exclusive? Physical traditions are often lost to technology, and sometimes, we don’t appreciate how nice they were until they’re already gone. This particular physical tradition is one that means a great deal to us. So, unwilling to part ways with this iconic book, we decided to take matters into our own hands, and make use of the new, freely accessible website. This is the resulting knock-off. We cut corners, definitely took some artistic liberties and racked up some serious hours of copying and pasting, but it was well worth it to honour all of this brilliant work. This is our wonderfully dodgy tribute to the book we can’t bear to let go." 
With a beautifully written intro by John Hegarty. ‘When we’ve lost so much, it’s important to hold onto that which is precious. This is precious.’
At 542 pages, it features all of the 2020 pencil-winning work. The book draws on its unofficial ‘knock off’ complete with a cardboard cover and the D&AD Annual logo has also been reimagined to fit the tagline ‘Not Dead Yet’.

It features all the award winning projects including Twenty-five Sculptures in Five Dimensions a project Fenner Paper was involved with, which was conceived and sculpted by poet Tom Sharp, designed by Studio Sutherl&, soundtracked by Tony-nominated composer Alex Baranowski, with an introductory essay by art writer and curator Anna Souter. This project was printed on our Sixties 60gsm paper by Fenton Smith at Printsmith...
The Bootleg annual is printed in a limited edition of just 100 copies. With a natural corrugated cardboard cover and printed on 100% recycled uncoated paper.
Where Fenner Paper came into the project is that the yellow end-papers are printed on our Colorset Lemon 120gsm (100% recycled)...
The edition was digitally printed by Pureprint and carbon balanced with the World Land Trust.

What a great project and it's a shame that no one has taken the job on of producing the 2021 annual in print.

Maggie's Xmas Card

Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks. The first Maggie’s Centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996 and since then Maggie’s has continued to grow, with 27 centres at major cancer hospitals.
The image used on the card is of an apple installation by Rebecca Louise Law at Maggie's Culture Crawl held in 2014.

The cards are printed on our Colorset Crimson 270gsm, our 100% recycled text and cover range. They are printed in halftone, offset litho in one colour, silver and hot foil blocked in matt white foil.

K is for...

This is a beautiful little book, which is a personal project for printer and bookbinder Katherine Anteney sent to my colleague Sarah Glennie. Produced in an edition of 200 of which 140 copies went to the Oxford Guild of printers. 
Size is 156x124mm, portrait with a 4pp cover and 8pp text which is cut short on the width at 156x124mm and is printed Letterpress throughout using this fantastic letter K in woodblock type.
The cover is printed on our Colorset (100% Recycled) Solar 270gsm and the text is on StarFine Natural 100gsm. Below image shows the front and back cover spread out...
A particularly nice touch is the use of a pink staple on the binding - one steel and one pink 
A really lovely little job and thanks to Katherine for sending it to Sarah!

Graphic Lines

Founded in 2015 by Mark Leeds and Duncan Johnson c-ll-ct-v-ly is a London based Design and Research studio working in all media and especially editorial and moving image. As a studio project. they publish these limited edition magazines, using unpublished, reordered, remade, refound or newly created artworks. They are a quick-fire collaboration between the studio and a range of creatives ...an easy consumed, visual hit.
Graphic Lines is Number 10 by Iain Follett. Iain is based in Leicester and is Design Director at design agency Six. In 2015 he started the @mintneverhinged feed on instagram to showcase his collection of Graphic Stamps. From the exposure of the Instagram feed he collaborated with Blair Thomson (@graphilately and Creative Director at Believe In) and Unit Editions on a book called Graphic Stamps showcasing the best from their collections.
Mint Never Hinged came off the back of years spent collecting design ephemera. Way before I set up @mintneverhinged I had painstakingly been collecting and researching stamp design in order to archive the forgotten and unknown designers behind them and to put out a publication of my own on the subject matter. However in 2015 we were approached by Unit Editions to publish a book on our collections and being big admirers of Unit Editions, Tony Brook and Adrian Shaughnessy we couldn’t resist. Even that book, as full as it is, merely scratches the surface of the collection as a whole. Iain Follett
Size is A5 (210x148mm) portrait, saddle stitched. It has a 4pp cover, cut short at 105mm width with a 16pp text and a 4pp insert which is full height but 75mm wide.
The text is not a straightforward 16pp, the centre spread is actually a 8pp, which is stitched in but folds up as you can see above and below...
The cover is printed on our Colorset Solar 120gsm in black only. Text is printed on Gardapat 13 Kiara 150gsm. For readers not familiar with GardaPat 13, it's a fully coated paper but it really does have a dead flat MATT surface. There are many papers on the market which profess to be matt - some which incorporate the word matt in the name, but aren't! Apart from the high quality matt surface, this paper has an extraordinarily high bulk - this 150gsm text with a thickness of 195mics. The insert sheet (above image) is printed on Offenbach Bible 80gsm.
All materials are digitally printed using an HP Indigo digital press and the results are superb, beautifully showing the artworks. As many readers will know, many materials have to be "Sapphire Treated" to work successfully on HP Indigo presses, however both the text (Gardapat 13) and insert (Offenbach Bible 80gsm) are both printed without sapphire treatment ..and it's superb!
Printing and finishing, including the lovely white wire used on the saddle stitches (above) is by WithPrint who are based outside Bristol in Rooksbridge.

Repeat Repeat

https://www.freelandsfoundation.co.uk/Freelands Foundation was founded by Elisabeth Murdoch and is based in Camden, London. The Foundation’s mission is to support artists and cultural institutions, to broaden audiences for the visual arts and to enable all young people to engage actively with the creation and enjoyment of art.

The multidisciplinary group exhibition, Repeat Repeat, was curated by Freelands Foundation Creative Director Henry Ward. The show investigates ideas of daily practice and repeated routine while addressing questions relating to domesticity, parenting and occupation. It features internationally recognised artists alongside creative individuals who would not necessarily call themselves artists.

This is the literature produced to support the exhibition. The portrait format publication which consists of a 4pp cover on Colorset Flint 270gsm with a 24pp text printed on StarFine White 150gsm.
The cover on 100% Recycled Colorset Flint 270gsm is beautifully debossed and hot foil blocked in matt white foil.
The text pages are printed offset litho in CMYK on our StarFine White 150gsm, an uncoated text paper which has printed beautifully, with the solid and the images looking brilliant.

The saddle stitching is nice and neat and the job sits nice and flat.
The publication is designed by Utile. Creative Director is Nicholas Duggins and designer is William Lyall. Print is by Identity Print, based in Paddock Wood with Paul Martin handling the project.

Claymore - Type Specimen Book

This printed booklet from Jeremy Tankard serves two purposes; to show the weights and styles of Claymore and to present a short text, titled Principles of Type. The text comprises a collection of thoughts gathered over several years, and offered as a possible approach to the design thinking of a typeface.
Illuminated manuscripts and stained glass provide the inspiration for the colour pages, and the visual patterns of figured verse and calligrams are referenced for the translucent pages printed in black. In contrast to this, Principles of Type is set cleanly on Colorset Light Grey inserted as a booklet in the centre.
Below image shows the Principles of Type on the right hand side.
Size of the booklet is 152 x 230mm, portrait and is saddle stitched. The main text is printed on our Creative Print Diamond 170gsm, which is 100% recycled. The transparent sheets are printed on Sixties 60gsm. SIXTIES has the same translucency as a tracing paper - but it feels like a normal paper!
Principles of Type is an 8pp section, size is 187x121mm and is printed on Colorset Light Grey 120gsm.
Printed in three specials plus black on various uncoated papers. The specimen was designed to allow a degree of randomness when assembled; resulting in several versions and a final item which is more individual and unique. Below shows the variations... 
It's printed Offset Litho throughout by KMS Litho in Banbury.

Jobs from the past - Number 138

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good projects from years gone by and here's one from 2008.

I've written many posts on this blog which includes the phrase "...just the cover makes the difference" and the cover on this pocket guide is just superb. It is printed offset litho on our Colorset Lime 120gsm, in just one colour.

The size is A6 (148x105mm) portrait and is saddle stitched. It has a 4pp cover and 24pp text printed on an uncoated 120gsm, again the text is also just printed in 1 colour. For those of you not familiar with this collection, Colorset now has 36 colours and all colours are available in 120, 270 and 350gsm. Below shows the inside front cover...

For a little pocket guide, this has an excellent feel and flows nicely in the hand. This an excellent example of a project which is quite a long run and has been produced in a cost effective way, but the use of a self coloured cover (which will always be more expensive than a white paper) has massively raised the quality level of the publication.
Design is by Practise. Originally founded in London by James Goggin and Shan James in 1999, Practise is now based between Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand) and Providence, Rhode Island (United States)
