Jobs from the past - Number 127

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this publication is from 2016. 

LCC - Design for Visual Communication (DVC) 2016

This publication reviews the work of 56 students who have undertaken the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in part-time and full-time modes at the London College of Communication (LCC) during 2016. The introductory section includes two features related to design activism and is illustrated using images taken from student submissions to the ISTD student assessment.

Size of the publication is 240x160mm (an oversize A5 which is economical to print using 'B'size paper). The cover design is by Caley Dewhurst and is letterpress printed at the LCC letterpress department by Christian Granados and Alex Cooper.
The 4pp cover is printed on our Colorset (100% Recycled) Light Grey 270gsm and printed in three colour letterpress.
The 64pp text is printed CMYK offset litho at the LCC litho printing department by Tony Yard and the result is excellent. The first pages are for the DVC Postgraduate Certificate

It's also worth pointing out that one of the students on this course, Chia-Lin Lin (see r/h page below) was awarded the prestigious Vincent Steer prize at the ISTD Student Awards in that summer which you can read about here.

StarFine is a quality, uncoated paper and as the images show, image reproduction is excellent. The photographic images, montages and illustrations all look equally stunning - a great amount of detail for an uncoated paper.
64pp of StarFine 115gsm is about the maximum that you can successfully saddle stitch without it "gaping" in the centrefold too badly. This publication works but it would be a struggle if there were any more pages....
You can see below the "matrix" crease that means that the cover has been really well finished so that the cover sits as flat as possible and there's no cracking along the spine. Print finishing was also in-house at the LCC by Scott House.
The course leader is Tony Pritchard and this is an excellent example of a high quality publication that can be produced when like-minded individuals come together and in house facilities exist and have been fully utilised.

LCC Postgraduate Show

The identity for this year's LCC degree shows is by Tara Hanrahan at Think/Do, which includes interior signage, exterior signage, wayfinding and literature. This week is the postgraduate show, with over 200 post graduate students showing their work. The Postgraduate shows run from 28.11.2016 to 10.12.2016.
The printed collateral includes this postgraduate information booklet. Size is A5 (210x148mm), portrait and is saddle stitched.
The 4pp cover is on Colorset (100% Recycled) Amethyst 270gsm, printed offset litho in black only
 
 The 8pp text is printed on Crush, Grape 120gsm, printed in two colours, black and a special colour.

If you are not aware of our range called CRUSH from Favini, it is very unusual! The paper is made partly using the residue from the industrial processing of crushed citrus fruit, coffee, nuts, olives, kiwi, corn, cherries, lavender and most recently grape. These agro-industrial "end of life" products replace up to 15% of conventional tree pulp and are combined 30% post-consumer recycled waste, FSC virgin fibre and is produced with 100% green energy. As a result, the sheet is not a "clean" paper, it has identifiable pieces of residue visibly in the paper, as you can see below...
The range is available in 100, 120, 200, 250 and 350gsm and the shades are natural, earthy tones and the feel of the paper is natural and tactile. See the range here.

Printing is by Calverts, who are a London based printing cooperative who focus on sustainable printing. Another lovely feature, is the use of the black wire stitches below:
Sustainability is an important facet to Tara's practice, which accounts for the selection of these sustainable papers and printer. You can read more about the identity work here:

LCC Degree Show Book

The identity for this year's LCC degree shows is by Tara Hanrahan at Think/Do, which includes interior signage, exterior signage, wayfinding and literature. With over 700 graduating students showing a diverse range of work, it is a serious challenge for any identity to encompass the breadth of what is on offer. Hardcover - a step by step guide

This is a delightful publication called Hardcover. It is a step by step guide about the techniques and tools required for flat-back case binding. It is written and produced by Veronica Rafa and Rahel Zoller,
The design is by Veronica, an MA student at the LCC and the content is by Rahel, who is a book arts and design technician in the Book Arts Department at the LCC.  
The publication is a 16pp self cover. Size is 215x150mm (interesting that it's not a standard A5 size) portrait and is saddle stitched. It is printed offset litho in two special colours (red and blue).

It is printed on our Flora Noce 100gsm. If you aren't familiar with Flora, it is a part recycled text and cover paper with a deliberately recycled look and feel with specks and inclusions, so it looks overtly recycled. You can see just how flecky and specky it is in the image below:
However, just because it has flecks and specks in it doesn't mean you can't print all over it! as the spread below ably demonstrates....

A superb solid blue - which for those not 'in the know' is by far the hardest colour to print successfully.

This piece of literature is just superbly written, illustrated and printed. All detailing is just superlative, as you can see from the red wire stitching in the image below:
...and if all this wasn't remarkable enough, I can tell you it was printed 'in house' at the LCC at the Elephant and Castle by Litho technician Tony Yard. Below is an image taken of the press sheets in the viewing booth, when the job was on press

This week is Green Week...at the LCC

Green Week is an event hosted at the London College of Communication (LCC) where staff and students are encouraged to take part in workshops, talks, installations and exhibitions. This year the subject of Green Week is SURVIVAL and during the week, the events will seek to investigate how designers, filmmakers, journalists, photographers and communicators are responding to the issues of our time.

The programme for the week has been printed at the LCC on their own Heidelberg B2 press by the resident technicians Tony Yard and Scott House. 
The booklet is 148x105mm (A6) portrait and is a 16pp self cover - which is a very "green" format - that is to say it is made up out of one SRA3 sheet which maximises both the press format and the paper. The book shows the timetable of events happening throughout the five days (10-14th February 2014)
The edge of each of the pages is coloured, which relates to the timetable in the front. A nice touch although this makes it more challenging from a print finishing point of view, but as you can see from the picture below, it's been very successfully achieved.
 
The programme is printed on our Shiro Echo, White 80gsm (100% recycled) from Favini in Italy - just perfect for Green Week. Printed CMYK offset litho throughout.
