Jobs from the past - Number 123

Happy new year to all my regular readers.

Followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this publication is way back from the 1990's
Art & Architecture - Pentagram 1994
This small publication was produced by Pentagram for the society called Art & Architecture to outline the aims of the society, what it involved and about membership - don't forget, this was the days before the internet, so in many ways you could describe this as a 'homepage'!
It is a 16pp self cover, saddle stitched and is A6 (148x105mm) portrait.
Images are printed in Duotone (beautifully) on our uncoated Neptune Unique 140gsm. Printed offset litho in black, grey and a fluorescent orange (this was back in the days when doing a three colour job was cheaper than CMYK!) The photography is by Phil Sayer.
Design is by Pentagram - John Rushworh's team. Unfortunately my notes aren't totally complete - so if you have more information about the project, please let me know and I can amend this post.

The job was printed by a company called Penshurst Press based in Tunbridge Wells. Sadly the company is no longer around. Alan Flack with Martin Darby who handled this project, formed their own printing company called Principal Colour and they are still based in Paddock Wood in Kent.
I have tried to track down the society and sadly I am unable to find anything about it online and I can only assume that it has since collapsed. If anyone has anything to add, please let me know...

Harvey Lloyd - new prints, new shop...

Harvey Lloyd Screenprint is a silkscreen print studio based in the South East of England and their work has appeared on this blog many times over the years. Established 40 years ago, they produce work for some of the best names in the industry, Anthony Burrill, Mr Bingo, Spin Design, Pentagram, Tom Pigeon, Morag Myerscough, Adrian Johnson to name a few. Harvey Lloyd have gained a reputation for having artists at their studio (often with film crews) and working together to produce their images. By working interactively, they find different techniques which are developed collaboratively.

...and now, for the first time, Harvey Lloyd Screenprint have produced a series of their own prints:
Bale (pictured above and below) is produced in 3 colour ways - Fluorescent Pink, Green and yellow. The finished size is 600mm x 600mm.
The series Connect, Metropolis and Pyramid are all 400mm square

Spheres and Weave are A2 size and printed using 3 colours using an unusual technique- getting away from digital technology and back to analogue, a technique which Steve Fachiri and Tracey Day at Harvey Lloyd don't want to reveal, save telling me that the screens were created using torn paper for the stencils.

...and of course I should have mentioned that they are all printed on our wonderful Matrisse 250gsm, which is an uncoated, white board range with a high bulk (330microns) is FSC certified and Acid Free.

Assila Hotel, Jeddah

Offering a rooftop outdoor pool and spa center, the Assila Hotel, part of the Rocco Forte hotel group, is located in Jeddah in the Makkah Al Mukarramah province.

This superb brochure for the hotel, reveals the new Rocco Forte branding by Pentagram.

The format is A5 (210x148mm) portrait and is saddle stitched. The 8pp cover is printed and foiled on Dali, Perla 200gsm and the 36pp text is printed on our Marazion Ultra 135gsm.

Below shows a detail image of the 8pp cover showing the full width flaps.
The book is written and produced entirely in arabic and therefore it opens at what we in the west consider to be the back, so the image below shows the inside front spread.
The material used for the cover is our Dali range, which is a 'felt-marked' paper with a linear effect and a natural, tactile feel. If you click on the image below, you will be able to see the texture in the paper.
The 36pp text is printed offset litho on our Marazion Ultra 135gsm, chosen because of it's dead matt flatness which would reproduce the interior images well without a glossiness which would detract from the cool look and feel of the hotel.

Jobs from the past - Number 119

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and here's one from 2002. 

Fourth Estate Catalogue

The Fourth Estate is a publishers that many people will be familiar with. Founded by Victoria Barnsley in 1984, Fourth Estate built a reputation as one of the most innovative and eclectic imprints in the industry, with a reputation for publishing a wide variety of critically-acclaimed and beautifully-produced titles including many prize winning authors (Booker, Orange etc).

One of the things that made the Fourth Estate stand out from the crowd was their catalogues - they were simply amazing pieces of design and print! I was lucky enough to work on a few different catalogues in the late 90's and early 2000's. Every single one was different and brilliant. Good designers were commissioned, Bogue & Hopgood, Instinct, Pentagram, Rose Design, Frost, Neville Brody, Tom Hingston to name a few. In line with their reputation for publishing unconventional yet innovative titles, the design of the catalogue was equally eclectic.

This is a particularly distinctive catalogue, printed in just one colour - white onto a black paper and board...
The effect of printing it onto black paper, means that the edge is a solid black and the white silkscreen ink looks really white and jumps off the page. Below shows the black edge.
The design and art direction is by Vince Frost with the superb illustrations by Marion Deuchars. This is a very special project where the creative direction, excellent execution of the images and high production values all come together.

The size of the book is 225x160mm, portrait. It has an 8pp cover and a 72pp text. The 8pp cover has full width flaps (148mm wide) which you can see in this birsdseye image here...

It is printed on our Colorset Nero (100% Recycled) 270gsm and 120gsm. Some of the pages towards the back of the publication are just listings, which again are superbly printed given that it is silkscreen ink, which cannot print as finely as litho.

 The 120gsm text weight flows really nicely...

Design and art direction is by Vince Frost. Illustrations by Marion Deuchars. The print production was undertaken by Lauren Displays in Ayelsford in Kent and they made a superb job of it.
 
So, where is everybody now?....
Victoria Barnsley, founder of Fourth Estate, joined Harper Collins as CEO and Publisher in 2000 when it acquired her company, leaving in 2013.
 
The silkscreen printer, Lauren Displays, have been taken over and are now part of the DS Smith Group.

Marion Deuchars is a very popular illustrator and works through the Heart Agency in London.

Vince Frost left for the sunnier climate of Australia around eighteen years ago and runs Frost* in Sydney.

...and Fenner Paper? ...yep, we're still here!

ISTD Student Awards 2019

Last Friday, I was invited to  the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) Student awards, hosted by Pentagram at their wonderful studio in Notting Hill. Pentagram partner, Sascha Lobe, presented the certificates to the successful students and tutors.

It was a beautiful summer evening...
As with all ISTD events it was a very warm and friendly occasion with beer, wine and nibbles all laid on, for well over a hundred guests. The evening began with an introduction by Jonathan Doney, the Chair of ISTD (below) who gave a brief re-cap of the society's history, founded over 90 years ago by Vincent Steer. Jonathan reminded us that the Student awards programme has been running continuously for over 40 years, with programmes in six regions around the world.
This presentation evening is for the main student assessment scheme held in the UK and Ireland. Students from Universities and Institutions around the UK and Ireland answered a number of briefs written by the ISTD's Education team. This is an international education scheme and the assessments for other regions of the globe are on-going.
Pentagram partner, Sascha Lobe gave a brief talk (above) and presented all the certificates (printed on our StarFine) and also an excellent goody bag (sponsored by Cass Art). There were students from universities from all over the country including eight students from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin together with their tutor Jamie Murphy (The Salvage Press)
My thanks to the ISTD board for inviting me and as I have said many times on this blog before, it's very important to support organisations such as the ISTD and events such as this. A big thank you to all those members of the ISTD board and education committee who freely give their time for the benefit of others.

Thanks must also go to Pentagram and to Sascha Lobe. It is wonderful that a respected agency such as Pentagram freely gives their resources for such an event, it is inspirational for the students and is a great way for the partnership to give something back to education.
