OK by Supermundane

I've just received a beautifully produced silkscreen print from Gary Parselle at The Private Press.

This print is one of the series called Editions which is Gary's own collection of exclusive, hand-pulled limited edition screen prints, featuring a carefully chosen selection of artworks by leading contemporary artists. Working collaboratively with the artists, Gary aims to use this series to showcase the possibilities of creative screen printing using interesting inks, papers and techniques.
This print is by Supermundane: “I’m a big fan of screen printing and how physical a process it is. I’ve had the pleasure of working with The Private Press on a few projects in the past so I was excited to be asked to be involved in this new project. My print is part of my on going ‘You Made This’ project which explores our fears and desires. This time I’ve hidden the term OK in there that represents the word and a mouth and body of sorts at the same time."
The print is silkscreen printed in three colours onto our Colorset (100% Recycled) White 270gsm board. The yellow and blue inks overlap and combine to make green in select areas.

The below image shows before and after on the drying rack! On the left - yellow and blue, on the right - overprinting black.
The size of the prints is A2 (420x594mm) and is a limited edition of just 50, signed and numbered by the artist. My thanks to Gary for sending me this print and his lovely note...
The Private Press is a small Brighton-based screen printing company, established in the summer of 2013. The studio was established by Gary Parselle, who has more than 10 years of screen printing experience. Before setting up the Brighton studio, Gary worked extensively in some of London's most renowned graphic design and advertising agencies where he specialised in print production and this is where I met him (...at Interbrand I think). This is the reason that Gary has an in-depth knowledge of print, paper and finishing techniques.

The Private Press specialises in high quality, hand pulled screen prints for artists, illustrators and graphic designers. Below are the other prints from the 'Editions' series...

The Cloud Eaters

This is a recently produced silkscreen print of an artwork called The Cloud Eaters. It is by artist Joe Webb, who works mainly in the medium of collage.
The print has been created using 6 colours and had an iridescent varnish layer put down first. The print is an A1 size and is printed onto our StarFine White 300gsm.

The print has been produced by Gary Parselle at The Private Press. Gary is a collaborative silkscreen printer who works with artists to try and achieve the best possible representation of the artists work in sympathy with the original ...and he must be doing a good job as artists are queuing up to work with him!

The below image shows the framed print on display at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
You can see more of Joe Webb's work here:

Yorkshire House

Yorkshire House is a landmark 1960's building in Greek Street, central Leeds. Having undergone a major refurbishment, it now provides 83,000 square feet of prime office space. The refurbishment has been done in such a way that this is now a low carbon office environment. The scheme incorporates 'the Yorkshire Hub' which is a range of flexible office spaces specifically aimed at the creative and media industries.

This is the sales brochure for the new complex, which is designed to appeal to the design savvy clients that are the target audience.
The size is 297x240mm and the cover, or covers are silkscreen printed on 2000micron Greyboard, which has been mounted on the actual cover to make a nice chunky cover.

The book has two front covers, a format I have described before as a 'double-ender'. The white cover is the "Introduction to Straight Thinking" and the Red cover introduces the fact that this is a buzzing creative environment with a distinctive Yorkshire touch....
You can see below with the cover spread out...
The actual 4pp cover is printed on our Colorset Bright Red 350gsm (which then has the Greyboard mounted on the outside. The below spread shows the inside front cover, with the Colorset on the left, which has been silkscreen printed in one colour (white).
A striking feature is the 'three hole sewing' used for the binding (see below image). There are two 'banks' of three hole sewing - making six holes in all, using white thread.

The 32pp text is printed on our Omnia 150gsm. This choice of materials works with the design superbly. Lots of white space, with the paper feeling tactile and the predominant red and blacks looking really punchy and the four colour images looking fabulously detailed and crisp, in a way that they just wouldn't on a traditional uncoated paper.
Omnia has an uncoated look and feel but it has a surface treatment which means the printed result is similar to that of a coated paper - bright, vivid and punchy. The text throughout is printed offset litho.

The centre spread (below) with the two banks of three hole sewing in the spine.
Below image shows the top and foredge of the book and the way that the Greyboard is mounted on the cover. The total thickness is 9mm.
To go with the brochure, custom envelopes (324x265mm) were manufactured using Colorset Bright Red 120gsm and also silkscreen printed in white.

Art direction and design is by creative consultants Heavenly. Creative director on the project is Tony de.Ste.Croix.

Printing, including production of the silkscreen cover and the superb finishing and three hole sewing, is by Gavin Martin Colournet.

Euro 2016 Planner

As many of you will know, the UEFA Euro 2016 Football championship begins this week on Friday.

...well yesterday morning, I had a lovely surprise as I received a smartly packaged postal tube, containing a beautiful planner for the Euros - a gift from Crispin Finn, a Kent based design and silkscreen studio.
Simply produced in their trademark red, white and blue (all of their personal work appears in just these three colours) it has been hand silkscreen printed in red and blue. A truly stunning, visually stimulating planner.
The size of the planner is 510x700mm and is silkscreen printed on our Matrisse 200gsm, which is a perfect weight. Matrisse is a tactile uncoated white board with a high bulk. Below is a detail showing close up of the all important group B...
Each of the posters is embossed with their Crispin Finn seal.
It looks far to nice to put on the wall and write on! ...but I will. Every good design studio should have one of these on the wall - and luckily you can, because they are available on the Crispin Finn website! You can buy one of these lovely planners for just £10 plus shipping - it's a bargain - but you'll have to be quick, the competition starts on Friday:

My thanks to Roger Kelly and Anna Fidalgo for sending it on over.

Why Make Sense?

These are the tour posters for a band called Hot Chip. The tour follows their latest album Why Make Sense? This new LP features the acclaimed singles Huarache Lights and Need You Now. Recorded in Oxfordshire and London and produced by Hot Chip with Mark Ralph and mixed by the band, David Wrench (FKA Twigs, Caribou) and Jimmy Douglass (Timbaland, Aaliyah). The album features guest appearances from De La Soul’s Posdnuos and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside (Love Is The Future), as well as live instrumentation and backing vocals from touring band members Sarah Jones and Rob Smaughton.
The A2 size posters are silkscreened in three colours on each side and the inks have been changed to produce four different colour versions as you can see in the below picture.
The posters are printed on our StarFine White 300gsm and the result is simply stunning - depth of colour is superb:
The posters are designed by Nick Relph. He also designed the album covers, which due to a unique algorithm, randomly alters each album cover resulting in each cover being different. You can view the artwork, designed by Nick Relph, here: http://www.dominorecordco.com/whymakesense/artwork/

...and you can read about the album project here: http://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/hot-chip-why-make-sense

The prints were screen-printed by Gary Parselle at Brighton based silkscreen studio, The Private Press.

Fránçois and the Atlas Mountains

I've just been sent these great pics by Gary Parselle at The Private Press of a new tour poster he's just printed. The band is called François & the Atlas Mountains and they are a Franco-British pop group, combining indie pop, folk pop, and African rhythms ( ...so their website says)
This is the second time that The Private Press has worked for the band, this time the poster is for the UK 2014 spring tour,  in support of the recent album Piano Ombre ..and you can see a video here:
This A4 (210x297mm) size poster is silkscreen printed using an opaque white ink onto our Colorset, Bright Red 270gsm (which is 100% Recycled) and is available to buy exclusively on the tour.
The Private Press is a silkscreen studio based in Brighton run by Gary Parselle and as you can see, he does some really nice stuff!
