Jobs from the Past - Number 5

Regular followers will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" (see posts on 01.10.2009, 01.11.2009 & 01.12.2009 etc etc.) so that I can show some of the memorable jobs from times past, and here's one from back in 2007.

At this Rate - awareness campaign
This job is for the Rainforest Action Network. The purpose of the publication is to highlight the scale of the destruction of the world's rainforests. Design is by Studio8, Matt Willey and Zoë Bather were designers on the project. The amazing photography is by Giles Revell.

The size of the job is 220mm x160mm portrait and is best described as an 8pp cover with a 24pp text. The text is actually formed by a long concertina (with one join) and the 8pp cover, which has a 10mm capacity spine actually works as a "dustjacket". It was constructed like this for reasons of both economy and ecology! The whole job actually comes out of one B1 sheet of paper meaning that it was relatively economical from a printing point of view and it was also not wasteful which is in line with the clients aims and objectives.

The book forms a series of spreads which really show off the stunning photography and make the spreads very powerful. Below is "Every day we lose an area larger than all five boroughs of New York City" It is quite simply a stunning job both from the concept, design, photography, format, printing and finishing. It deservedly won 2008 DesignWeek award for Editorial Design. Thumbnail of the entire job is below:

The photography was printed as a Tritone with a high density black ink. The repro and superb print is by Granite. The material choice is Neptune Unique FSC 200gsm which not only printed fantastically but was also the environmental choice by having Forestry Stewardship Council certification.

I do still have a few copies available so if you would like one, send me an e-mail and I'll see what I can do!

ISTD Awards 2009

I was lucky enough to go to the ISTD awards last Friday and it was a great evening. It was held at the Arts Club in London's Mayfair. As with all ISTD events, there is a real air of friendliness and fellowship, whether this is because there is always an international element, I don't know. I was seated at a table with people from Holland (http://www.studiovanson.com/) who were a great laugh.

The series of three posters below is the ISTD Awards 2009 Overall Winner by Paris based, Studio Apeloig (www.apeloig.com)

All award winners deserve congratulations, but in particular, there are some people who I must mention:

Cartlidge Levene for the wayfinding & environmental graphics for The Guardian building - (I know it's not on paper, but it's still fantastic work!) http://www.cartlidgelevene.co.uk/

Barrie Tullett and Philippa Wood who are lecturers at University of Lincoln and who run The Caseroom Press for The Ghost in the Fog (pictured left).

This is a book that only contains the corrections and alterations of the author.

Congratulations on their Premier award (by the way, it's printed on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm)

NB:Studio won a Certificate of Excellence for their series of House magazines for Soho House, the covers of which are below: http://www.nbstudio.co.uk/
...and the list goes on - The Chase for their marvellous woodblock letters made from chocolate, Studio 8 for FUTU magazine and Henrik and Scott from A2/SW/HK for a clutch of awards.

Here's a very cheerful looking Paulus M. Dreibholz, happy with his well deserved Certificate of Excellence for the poster for the Institute of Architecture in Vienna.

Malcolm Garrett (http://www.appliedinformationgroup.com/) and David Coates (http://www.tothepoint.co.uk/), lurking behind the scenes!

...and a prize for anyone who can guess which dark horse from the NB:Studio table this is (answers on a nice postcard please!)
It was an excellent evening which showed a fantastic array of international typographic excellence. It is REALLY important for our industry that we retain societies such as the ISTD and we must take every opportunity to try and encourage membership, thus ensuring their continued viability.

So if you aren't a member, have a look http://www.istd.org.uk/ - for less than £10 per month - this is good value!

Grey Skies & Pigeons & Red Shiny Buses

Have a look at this poster. Designed by Studio8 this 'London' poster is an A2 2-colour screen printed poster. Numbered edition of 250. It is printed on a hemp paper (135gsm) which I had made as a trial some years ago. They had wanted an off white material which had a tactility to it and this paper fitted the bill perfectly.

If you like the sound of the paper, sorry but that was it - the very last sheets were used on this job! Truly a limited edition!

It was printed by Josh at White Duck Screeprint in Bath and he's made a lovely job of it. http://www.whiteduckscreenprint.co.uk/

Size Format Stock

Occasionally, I do lectures at colleges and universities (CSM, Uni of Lincoln, Portsmouth etc.) about materials, formats and production processes but was always conscious that I never left any concrete reference material. So after about 15 years, I finally got round to writing something!

I'm very pleased with finished product that the collaboration with Studio8 resulted in. I've had a fantastic reaction from both students and practising designers alike which is why I have ended up mailing it to all designers I work with, even though it was written intentionally for students!

Thank you to all those people that have sent me lovely e-mails about it and thank you to Matt and Zoë at Studio8 who made the whole project happen.

Here is a picture of them both hard at work in the studio, making it happen!

...and, we also collaborated with Grafik to insert the pamphlet with the July issue of the magazine to all the UK subscribers ...thank you Grafik!
