Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this publication is from the noughties. 

The Chase - 2004

From humble beginnings in a Manchester suburb, the Chase began with the ambition of providing a level of creativity that challenged the dominant London design groups. Now 34 years on, they are one of the most awarded creative consultancies in the world. Ben Casey (co-founder) still oversees The Chase and is also Professor at the University of Central Lancashire.  

This newspaper style format is a large finished size at 420x310mm and is a 12pp self cover, saddle stitched.

It is printed Offset Litho on our Redeem 100% Recycled 100gsm which is has a neutral white shade which gives the publication a 'newspaper' feel which really suits the editorial work that is being shown and which prints amazingly, as I hope these images show...

This publication was produced around the time that Harriet Devoy left Johnson Banks to join The Chase and set up the new London office. Since running the London office, Harriet joined Apple and was D&AD president last year. 

Below image shows the way the 12pp text sits nice and flat...

The publication isn't as light as a newspaper but it flows freely in the hand.

Design is by The Chase. I think it was printed by the New Leaf Press in Manchester, who have since closed.

Colorset - 8 new colours

For those of you not familiar with Colorset, it is our range of coloured text and cover papers which is 100% recycled and more competitively priced than some other well known brands of coloured paper! A few years ago we started to bring in our Colorset range in 350gsm, so we now have ALL colours in 120gsm, 270gsm and 350gsm - all in B1 size (700x1000mm).

We have now further developed the range with 8 new colours, making this a collection of 36 shades.

The new shades include five light shades and three deep shades. The new shades are Blush, Warm White*, Glacier, Storm, Hopsack*, Charcoal*, Spearmint* and Deep Blue (Note: four of the new shades with an asterisk* are virgin fibre)

The Colorset brand identity and swatch design was created by The Chase, some years ago but it's still going strong! Creative director on the project was Harriet Devoy and the designer was Monica Pirovano.

New Colorset Swatch

Many of you will know that a couple of years ago we started to bring in our Colorset range in 350gsm, so we now have ALL colours in 120gsm, 270gsm and 350gsm - all in B1 size (700x1000mm).

For those of you not familiar with Colorset, it is our range of coloured text and cover papers which is 100% recycled and more competitively priced than some other well known brands of coloured paper! Below is the updated swatch: 

The Colorset brand identity and swatch design was created by The Chase, some years ago but it's still going strong! Creative director on the project was Harriet Devoy and the designer was Monica Pirovano.

There are now 28 colours (including black and white) and two new shades, Chilli and Orchid -see image below

Jobs from the past - Number 51

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by...

Manchester Dogs Home Annual Review
2001-2002

This is a stunningly produced charity annual report. Manchester based agency, The Chase provided creative services for the dogs home on a pro-bono basis which resulted in many great pieces of literature being produced in the early 2000's. This report, under the title, 6,796 Dogs, was produced by the London office of The Chase and was much talked and written about, winning several awards. 

Size of the report is 420x297mm, portrait and is a 28pp 'self-cover' and is unbound. It was produced on our Optimale, Blanc Naturel 120gsm (which sadly is no longer available, since the mill closed).

The superb photography is by Manchester based photographer, Mat Wright.

The report won the DesignWeek Award for Annual Reports in 2003, was nominated for a D&AD award, received a Gold award from the Art Directors Club together with various other accolades and regional awards.

Creative Director on the project was Harriet Devoy at The Chase in London, senior designer was Stephen Royle. Harriet moved to Apple in 2007 and Steve has since returned to his roots in Manchester and is creative director at The Chase in Manchester.

 

The report was printed offset litho by New Leaf Press, based in Manchester who made a beautiful job of printing the project. The project was sponsored by the Co-Operative Insurance Services (CIS) who funded the printing, so it's only fair that over ten years later, they should get some credit.

Easter only comes one a year ... (with apologies to The Chase)

This is a superb April Fool that was sent out by The Chase. It comprises a Christmas card with a slip of paper inserted (photocopied and badly trimmed - deliberately of course) with a message (see below).

And of course the father Christmases were spelling out April Fool in semaphore. 

It's really clever and great to see that the creative juices are still wildly overflowing in Manchester. Creative Director on the project is Ben Casey.

Chase Calendar 2010

This is such a great calendar, so I'll let the pictures do the talking:

The size of the calendar is A2 (420x594mm). It is glued at the top edge and is drilled with seven holes for hanging and is "round cornered" as well. There is a page for each week and a total of 53 graphic/typographic designers have chosen their favourite typeface for a given letter and give a brief explanation for their choice - it's a great idea and really well executed.

I'm not going to list all 53 but they include people such as David Pearson, Alan Herron, Mike Dempsey, Jeremy Tankard, Phil Baines, Fernando Gutiérrez and the list goes on...! Below is the whole lot in one spread which Li Rui kindly sent me.

The calendar was printed on our Eco-Pure Recycled (100% Recycled) 100gsm which was a special making for this project. Printed and finished by DXG Media.

ISTD Awards 2009

I was lucky enough to go to the ISTD awards last Friday and it was a great evening. It was held at the Arts Club in London's Mayfair. As with all ISTD events, there is a real air of friendliness and fellowship, whether this is because there is always an international element, I don't know. I was seated at a table with people from Holland (http://www.studiovanson.com/) who were a great laugh.

The series of three posters below is the ISTD Awards 2009 Overall Winner by Paris based, Studio Apeloig (www.apeloig.com)

All award winners deserve congratulations, but in particular, there are some people who I must mention:

Cartlidge Levene for the wayfinding & environmental graphics for The Guardian building - (I know it's not on paper, but it's still fantastic work!) http://www.cartlidgelevene.co.uk/

Barrie Tullett and Philippa Wood who are lecturers at University of Lincoln and who run The Caseroom Press for The Ghost in the Fog (pictured left).

This is a book that only contains the corrections and alterations of the author.

It was an excellent evening which showed a fantastic array of international typographic excellence. It is REALLY important for our industry that we retain societies such as the ISTD and we must take every opportunity to try and encourage membership, thus ensuring their continued viability.

Rich Fairhead

I popped in to The Chase today and ended up having a chat and a cuppa (thanks Oli) with illustrator Rich Fairhead, so I took the photo opportunity to show you him and some of his work...

The alphabet and his robot illustrations are fantastic.

This Annual Report is an A2 finished size ...yes that's 594x420mm! It's massive! It's for the Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home and it's lovely.

The project was handled by Creative Director Steve Royle at The Chase in Manchester. The Designer was Mike Roberts.

It's printed on Redeem 100% Recycled 100gsm. It is A2 size 16pp and is just folded, no binding - lovely!

It was printed by DXG Media in Cheshire who have made a really good job of it.
