40 years of posters, circulars & talks...

Yesterday evening I was privileged to have been invited to the Typographic Circle 40th Anniversary exhibition, celebration and party!

TypoCircle, as it is usually referred to, was formed in 1976 to bring together anyone with an interest in type and typography. They stage a variety of type and typography related events including a series of diverse monthly lectures by well-known industry speakers, and the annual New York Type Directors Club exhibition. The list of previous speakers have included Alan Kitching, Stefan Sagmeister, Mike Dempsey, Ken Garland, Studio8, Erik Spiekermann, MadeThought, Michael Johnson, Anthony Burrill, Michael Wolff, Sir John Hegarty… to name just a few.  This event also launched the new logo (above) designed by NB: Studio and Studio Sutherl& and made by Bruno Maag.

Besides being serious about type, they are a very sociable organisation with a reputation for staging enjoyable events and this was certainly one of them!

The exhibition was curated in a large part by NB:Studio, working with Studio Sutherl&, Jon Bateson and everyone on the small but dedicated committee. The exhibition features 40 years of TypoCircle posters and Circulars, as well as some incredible ephemera, diligently squirrelled away by past committee members for such an occasion as this.

The exhibition includes a selection of nineteen issues of Circular, the Typocircle publication which in recent times has been designed by Domenic Lippa, printed by Richard Davey on paper sponsored by GF Smith.

This gives you an idea of some of the posters that were on display - printed by Gavin Martin Colournet on paper sponsored by GF Smith.

A publication comprising of three parts has been produced to support the exhibition. Designed in collaboration by NB:Studio, Studio Sutherl& and Jon Bateson. The first section is written by Lynda Relph-Knight and Sallyanne Theodosiou. The second is dedicated to spreads from all of the Circulars produced by Domenic Lippa and his team at Pentagram. And the final section contains 40 individual posters from the TypoCircle archive.

Above is a picture of the book, together with with the poster (designed by Studio Sutherl&) also printed by Gavin Martin Colournet on Colorplan 175gsm sponsored by GF Smith. The superb orange tote bag is sponsored by Streamline. Copies of the book are available from Typocircle.

Discussing the individual in type design

In addition to the presentation of his new typeface, this is an opportunity to participate in a discussion with Jeremy Tankard who will be sharing his experiences about some of the key issues influencing the contemporary type design field, not least the survival of an individual practice in an increasingly derivative design world.

In conversation with Catherine Dixon, the intention is to open out an initial dialogue to questions from the audience. Jeremy Tankard is a type designer who set up his own foundry in 1997, following early success in the field of corporate and branding design for leading consultancies including Wolff Olins. His typefaces will be familiar to many, with Corbel now a key system font for the Windows OS and Office Suite of applications. Other popular typefaces include Bliss, Aspect, The Shire Types and Enigma. Catherine Dixon is a designer, teacher and a writer with a certain preoccupation for all things typographic.

The event is being held at Regent’s Conference Centre in Regent’s Park, London on Wednesday 14th May 2014 at 7pm.

The evening is being presented by St Bride Foundation 
and the Wynkyn de Worde Society and half of the proceeds from the talk will go towards the Wynkyn de Worde Charitable Trust, which funds bursaries and seminars to assist in the education of those in future generations who will be involved in printing and related activities. Over 150 students have benefited from the Trust in the past year, attending events at the Letter Exchange, the Typographic Circle, the Edward Johnston Foundation and St Bride Foundation.

Typographic Circle Talk

Yesterday evening I was invited to a Typographic Circle talk at the JWT offices in Knightsbridge. The talk was by Studio8 with the title "Collaboration in Type & Print" and Zoë Bather went through a number of the studio's projects culminating with their identity work for the Central School launched earlier this year.

What was particularly interesting was the way she showed one project leading to another and the way that a friend, contact, previous colleague (etc. etc.) lead to another project and so on. It was cleverly illustrated as follows:

Digital just gets better and better!

This is a brochure produced for a conference hosted by the Prince's Foundation. It is A4 format and saddle stitched. It looks and feels great and yet the run was only 200 copies!

The job was printed on an Indigo digital press by Good News Press and the print result is fantastic. It is printed on our Omnia (FSC) 4pp cover on 150gsm and 20pp text on 120gsm.

Although Omnia was not developed for digital, it has been "sapphire treated" by the printer. This treatment is often applied to more unusual papers and provides a "key" so that the inks (which are different to litho inks) work on the paper surface.

As you can see from the spread below, the result is awesome!

Val kindly sent me a copy of the new Typographic Circle mgazine called Circular Sixteen and even though the paper was sponsored by another paper merchant (...based in Hull, guess who?), here's some pics, as it's very nice piece of work!
