The Burns Series

The Burns series is a range of greeting cards produced in Scotland by Solway Print who are based in Dumfries and Galloway. The cards feature quotations by Robert Burns accompanied by a small illustration. What makes these cards extra special is that they are printed letterpress.
Here are two cards from the series. The cards are 125mm square and are left blank on the inside. The outside of the cards is letterpress printed in 2 colours, black and deep red. Each of the cards has an explanatory note about each of the quotations on the reverse of the card.

The cards are printed on our Pure Cotton 350gsm, which is a range made using 100% cotton fibres. The board has a wonderful feel and prints letterpress superbly as cotton papers have a wonderful compressibility, allowing the type to sink into the paper (without having to crash/bash it!) You can see from the image below, just how good the crease works.
The cards are designed by Miranda Cloy who is a designer and illustrator at Solways. Many thanks to Miranda for giving these cards to my colleague Kerry and allowing them to be shown.

Bits and Bobs

This is a superb new range of small greeting cards from greeting card designer, publisher ...and now printer - Nineteen seventy three!

Based in Brighton, 1973 bought their first Heidelberg press a few years ago and now produce many of their ranges printed letterpress in house.
The 4pp cards are 120x85mm, portrait and they are printed on our Colorset 100% Recycled 270gsm in the Natural shade. Colorset is just perfect for letterpress as it's high bulk and compressibility allows the impression to sink into the board.
Here is a selection from the range, most are printed in two or three colours.
Above image shows reverse of cards, below shows detail:
The range all come with gummed ribbed kraft envelopes (90x125mm) in a cellophane bag and with a 'letterpressed with love' sticker

1973 Letterpress Collection

This is a superb new range of greeting cards from greeting card designer, publisher ...and now printer - Nineteen seventy three!

Based in Brighton, 1973 bought their first Heidelberg press over a year ago and are now in full production with many different designs.

The 4pp cards are 170x120mm, portrait and they are printed on our Colorset 100% Recycled 270gsm in the Natural shade. the Colorset is just perfect for letterpress as it's high bulk and compressibility allows the impression to sink into the board.
Here is a selection from the range. Some are just printed in one colour, although most designs are printed in two colours, sometimes incorporating something unusual such as a fluorescent ink.
...the picture below shows the detail of the card titled 'Paradise letterpressed' and is an ingenious design, printed in 3 colours.
...and the image below shows the texture of the board with the fluoro orange sitting in the Colorset Natural 270gsm beautifully:
