Newsletter with a history

This is the new publication for internal communication at the Historic Royal Palaces. It has been designed in a newspaper format but not as a broadsheet which is sometimes difficult to handle, so it is an unusual but easy to handle size of 430x280mm. It is only 12pp and loose bound, so it is concertina'd into thirds which makes it much easier to distribute.
It is printed on our Redeem 100% Recycled 100gsm which adds to the "newspaper" like feel but as you can see from the centre spread below which shows the "scientific" work of the "Royal ceremonial dress collection" the paper doesn't disapoint!
Although this publication is a small run of less than 1000 and produced entirely for internal distribution, it is an excellent example of well designed and thoughtfully produced literature working really well to engage the audience.

Digital just gets better and better!

This is a brochure produced for a conference hosted by the Prince's Foundation. It is A4 format and saddle stitched. It looks and feels great and yet the run was only 200 copies!

The job was printed on an Indigo digital press by Good News Press and the print result is fantastic. It is printed on our Omnia (FSC) 4pp cover on 150gsm and 20pp text on 120gsm.

Although Omnia was not developed for digital, it has been "sapphire treated" by the printer. This treatment is often applied to more unusual papers and provides a "key" so that the inks (which are different to litho inks) work on the paper surface.
As you can see from the spread below, the result is awesome!
Design is by Valerie Kildea at The Prince's Foundation and thank you for the lovely note.
Val kindly sent me a copy of the new Typographic Circle mgazine called Circular Sixteen and even though the paper was sponsored by another paper merchant (...based in Hull, guess who?), here's some pics, as it's very nice piece of work! There are articles about Lippa Pearce, Spin, Design Project to name but a few.

Midas Press goes bankrupt!

OK, get ready for a rant!

It turns out that Midas Press effectively “went bust” last week and yes, that means we (at Fenner Paper) like many other suppliers, won’t get our outstanding invoices paid and we are thousands of pounds out of pocket. Unfortunately that is one of the many risks of being in business.

Sadly this is an all too common occurrence in the printing industry but what really gets people upset is when the printer involved simply tells their customers (which will be many of you reading this blog) that they have "re-branded" or had a "management buy-out". What they will fail to mention is that they have shafted their creditors and literally walked away from their debts. This act in itself is unfair, but then life isn't fair - what is completely unjust is that they can just carry on trading as Midas Press (now PLC) with their customers (you) being completely oblivious as to what has happened.

So just to be clear, MIDAS PRESS HAS GONE BUST, but they are still taking on jobs and trading as Midas Press!
Please THINK AGAIN before supporting this type of phoenix company. How can you trust people who do things like this? According to the Printweek blog, apparently Midas Press have taken Paperlinx (the group who owns Robert Horne, Paperco and Howard Smith) for over £400,000!

If any of you want to see the kind of vitriol that goes with this type of appalling behaviour, have a look at the following links, especially the comments on the Printweek site!

...end of rant

Jobs from the Past - Number 5

Regular followers will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" (see posts on 01.10.2009, 01.11.2009 & 01.12.2009 etc etc.) so that I can show some of the memorable jobs from times past, and here's one from back in 2007.

At this Rate - awareness campaign
This job is for the Rainforest Action Network. The purpose of the publication is to highlight the scale of the destruction of the world's rainforests. Design is by Studio8, Matt Willey and Zoƫ Bather were designers on the project. The amazing photography is by Giles Revell.

The size of the job is 220mm x160mm portrait and is best described as an 8pp cover with a 24pp text. The text is actually formed by a long concertina (with one join) and the 8pp cover, which has a 10mm capacity spine actually works as a "dustjacket". It was constructed like this for reasons of both economy and ecology! The whole job actually comes out of one B1 sheet of paper meaning that it was relatively economical from a printing point of view and it was also not wasteful which is in line with the clients aims and objectives.

The book forms a series of spreads which really show off the stunning photography and make the spreads very powerful. Below is "Every day we lose an area larger than all five boroughs of New York City" It is quite simply a stunning job both from the concept, design, photography, format, printing and finishing. It deservedly won 2008 DesignWeek award for Editorial Design. Thumbnail of the entire job is below:

The photography was printed as a Tritone with a high density black ink. The repro and superb print is by Granite. The material choice is Neptune Unique FSC 200gsm which not only printed fantastically but was also the environmental choice by having Forestry Stewardship Council certification.

I do still have a few copies available so if you would like one, send me an e-mail and I'll see what I can do!

Clever design solution...

Here is a well designed, clear and thoughtfully produced little job. It is a membership booklet for Dartington, which is a charity with a long history back to the 1930's when the founders set up the "Dartington Experiment" at Dartington Hall in Devon.

This A5 booklet combines the need for clear information, a clever reply element (the pull out centre 4pp pages have a re-moist glue around three edges) and an equally clever delivery element - as the cover makes it's own envelope by use of a flap and an adhesive tape strip.

Picture above shows outside back cover and the pic below shows the front and back cover with the flap that forms the "envelope" style flap. Text on the cover has also been hot foil blocked in matt white foil which gives a rich contrast with the self-coloured cover board.
The project is designed by biz-R who are based in Totnes, Devon. Creative Director on the project is Blair Thomson and design and (some!) of the copywriting is by Blair Thomson and Tish England.

It was in keeping with the charity's aims to use 100% Recycled materials, so our Colorset Deep Orange 270gsm was used for the cover combined with another recycled text paper ...sadly not on our material (it was on cyclus offset).

Print was by local firm Kingfisher Print and Design based in Totnes, Devon.

Kino spotlight

Yesterday I went to Kino Design in London. They invited me to come in to one of their "Spotlight" presentations. About once a month they get people to come in and talk about what they do. Must have been a hit as I'm on their blog!
