Jobs from the Past - Number 8

Regular followers will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and here's one from three years ago.

Per Una Lookbook - Autumn 2007

This is a very luxurious looking publication published for Marks & Spencers fashion label, Per Una.

The size of the job is 230x305mm Portrait. It uses Flockage Colours 400gsm in Anthracite on the 4pp cover, which is "heat de-bossed" and foiled in pink. The catalogue has an Italian theme with the photography having been done in Venice. The lovely touch was to produce a "Venetian" mask out of the same material for the invitation to the premiere of the collection (see pic below).

The 28pp text is printed on Brand X FSC 150gsm which is a recycled and virgin fibre combination.

Design and Art Direction is by Angela Cann at Rare Creative, based in London.

The cover alone makes this a stunning job but the nice touches such as the invitation and heat de-bossing make it a really accomplished piece of work.

It is printed four colour process, offset litho by Spot On Print in High Wycombe.

Daniel Lock arrives!

Now many of you may be reeling at the recent news of Ben Stott's departure from NB:Studio but there is yet another piece of news from the Bankside based studio. In a totally unrelated departure, Senior designer Daniel Lock is also leaving NB: Studio to pursue freelance work.

Over the last six years Daniel has been designer on several projects that I have worked on at NB:Studio including HOUSE magazine for Soho House (printed on Omnia, Redeem 100% Recycled and Concorde Pure Brilliance):

and a wide range of other projects including this D&AD awards promo poster (on Offenbach Bible 60gsm)
Now it's a little ironic being on this blog, that his new business cards are printed on a Dark Grey 700gsm board with a cord emboss from a paper merchant based in Hull, but I'm not bitter! (sadly, no prizes for guessing the paper range). But they have been very beautifully produced by Gavin Martin Associates using Holographic Foil.
Daniel is now actively looking for engagements, so you can find him on http://www.daniellock.co.uk/ ...and don't forget to stick my commission cheque in the post!

Coast Spring/Summer 2010 Collection

Here is yet another stunning look book for fashion retailer Coast. It's the Spring/Summer 2010 collection and it's just looks great!

The job is printed using a Dali (Neve) cover in 285gsm and with a StarFine Natural White 150gsm text.

The cover is unusual because the flaps of the 8pp cover fold onto the outside of the cover, creating the look of a spine in a three dimensional way (see pic below).

The publication is three-hole-sewn which gives the job a lovely quality and works very well with the "material" type feel of the Dali feltmarked board.

The images which are printed on the StarFine Natural White have worked very well and I guess it would have taken quite a lot of work to get them looking as good as this, but they really are exceptional.
Art Direction and Design is by Six Creative (http://www.six-creative.com/)
Print is by G&B Printers (http://www.gbprinters.co.uk/)
Photography is by Lachlan Bailey (http://www.streetersnewyork.com/)

It is yet another lovely job for Coast. Beautifully photographed, designed and printed. An interesting thing to note is that this is not a combination of materials that many people would consider for a job like this and I guess (when it works!) this is what also makes the job special.

Vincent

Nick Vincent set up design company Vincent in 2008 and the business is just coming up to it's second birthday.
Nick has worked at some highly respected studios including NB:Studio, SAS and 300million before moving out of London with his family to his new base in Ashford in Kent. He recently did his website which I think works really well, because as a small company (especially based outside London) it can be difficult to know what approach and language to use on a website - I feel it's just right ...you can judge for yourself !

Central School of Speech and Drama

I just thought that this might be of interest, even though it's a type only, one colour job!
Studio8 have designed the new identity for The Central School of Speech and Drama based in Swiss Cottage (London NW3). The new identity was launched in February this year.

Studio8 created a new typeface for the identity and then worked with Bruno Maag at Dalton Maag to realise the font into a workable typeface.

The new typeface was then tested using a variety of different weights and by printing offset litho on a range of different papers (including some which weren't even ours!). I picked some of these "overs" up the other week - which are printed on Redeem 100% Recycled, 100gsm and I think they look rather good just as they are...

Links of London Christmas catalogue

I've just picked up some copies of this lovely promotion produced last Christmas for Links of London.

It is an A6 portrait format with a 4pp cover (240gsm) and a 16pp text (100gsm). It is produced on Redeem 100% Recycled which has a natural shade and feel to it but has reproduced the very detailed and exacting images superbly. The cover image is fantastic (in my opinion!)

Design and Art Direction is by Chris Bedson at Links of London.

Below are some of the spreads...

The promotion was accompanied by an additional 4pp card (Printed on Redeem 100% Recycled 315gsm) which had perforated tokens offering additional incentives for lapsed customers - very nicely done.
The job is very well printed and finished and was produced by The Midas Press in Farnborough which unfortunately went bankrupt in January this year [see my previous post http://justinsamazingworldatfennerpaper.blogspot.com/2010/02/midas-press-goes-bankrupt.html]

Bright future with posters on Colorset Solar

I've just picked up these file copies of posters designed by Hat-Trick last year for a series of lectures at Norwich University of the Arts. They are printed on our Colorset Solar 270gsm and are A2 in size.
I think they speak for themselves...
