Orange Peel

Orange Peel is a publication with one goal... to put a smile on the readers face. It is designed to provide a sense of joy through positive content. Issue No.1 is an accumulation of artistic forms, including photography, illustration, painting, screen prints, poems and interviews. These transform the publication into a collectable work of art that provides the reader with an experience.
“Orange Peel” is the final major project by Alice Emery, a graduating student from the Arts University Bournemouth on the BA (Hons) Fashion Branding and Communications course.

Orange Peel features our Crush Citrus 120gsm, which is paper made using residues (15%) from the processing of citrus fruit and juicing process in Italy. This is sustainably sourced paper from Favini that uses waste and recycled fibres reduces the number of trees required to make the paper.
Crush Citrus 120gsm forms most of the text pages and is combined with other papers from that other well known "Hull based" paper merchant! (GF Smith)
Alice says..."These colourful pages of artwork make the publication feel more vibrant with a happy tone with the textures providing a tactile experience to ground the reader. The publication is size 270x360mm. This large format compliments the artwork in the publication making it feel important. The publication is bound with two short wire bindings allowing the pages to lay flat to fully appreciate the artwork on each page for an easy reading experience. To open the publication there is a wrap around using orange ric rac trim that the reader needs to unpeel to get to the content inside. This changes the way the reader interacts with the publication providing a tactile experience they can get their hands on and enjoy!"
Alice Emery is from Portsmouth and has always loved being creative, enjoying painting and drawing in her spare time. She has just graduated with first class degree BA (Hons) Fashion Branding & Communications. 

“Orange Peel” was a real passion project for me bringing together my love of art and fashion into creating a carefully crafted publication including content creation, branding and marketing. I am hoping to launch my career in fashion marketing using these skills and developing my practice.

The publication was digitally printed by Dayfold in Dorset with silkscreened additions.

Le Fizz

It's Valentine's Day and what better way to celebrate than with a cocktail...

This A6 recipe card and accompanying tent card is printed on Omnia 320gsm...
Omnia was chosen because of it's rich natural look and tactile feel. However, as you can see from images, the "Grey Goose Blue" is really rich and the solid has to print beautifully, which it does on Omnia. Reverse of card below:
Creative direction and design is by London based branding agency Ragged Edge.

Printing is by Dayfold who are based in Dorset.

CSM Shifts

Since 2018, Boyle&Perks has been working with Central Saint Martins to create a visual language for the College. Designed to fit within the parameters of the existing branding for UAL, the resulting scheme uses typography, a colour palette and visual system to bring both cohesion but also the flexibility to represent the diverse creative community within the College walls.

A few weeks ago I received the below item in the post...
What a wonderful surprise! Enclosed are a couple of posters produced to demonstrate the new visual language, one in red
...and one in black
The posters are A2 (420x594mm) size and are simply, but beautifully, hot foil blocked on our Colorset Lemon 120gsm. They really do look amazing.

The following article explains about the development of the new visual language...

“The last thing we wanted to do was create another typeface,” confesses Elaine Perks, “then we went full circle because we came to the realisation that it was the only way to create something distinct within the constraints of the overarching UAL branding. It was the opportunity to create something that is anarchic, unpredictable and characterful within that system.” To achieve this unpredictability, the designers alighted on randomised typefaces that shift so the same word appears differently each time it’s written out. Colophon Foundry had just completed a randomised project so Boyle&Perks challenged them to create a typeface that could encompass Central Saint Martins’ past, present and future all at once. “They wanted a design that would be dynamic, changing every time you used it, but to celebrate these pillars of Central Saint Martins: the past (the incredibly rich heritage and history), the present (the students there now) and the future (which is obviously very ambiguous). That’s what we thought was really challenging, these three moments that are quantifiable, in some sense, but open to interpretation,” says Edd Harrington of Colophon Foundry.

My grateful thanks to Bill and Elaine for sending me the the wonderful hot foiled posters and it's great to see the fulfillment of a project which has taken well over a year to complete and which has received universal approval in the design world with DesignWeek describing the identity as “boisterous, anarchic and unpredictable”

Dermatology M

Dermatology M is an exclusive range of carefully designed topicals and cosmetic skincare creams, ointments and tinctures, developed by world-renowned dermatologist Mazin Al-Khafaji. Mazin is recognised as one of the leading experts in the field of dermatology and Chinese medicine, and for three decades has treated unusual and difficult skin, auto-immune and allergic diseases with great success.
This 2pp 'dispensary slip' is 175x112mm. Printed CMYK in offset Litho, these slips are laser printed in the dispensary. The material used is Shiro Echo, White 80gsm, which is very lightweight but has a wonderful feel in the hand.
Beautifully printed, the fine (small) type is crisp and sharp.
Branding and design is by Aloof and it was kind of Michelle to send me some file copies and a lovely note too.
Printing is by Dayfold, who are based in Dorset.

LCM Examinations Brochure

The London College of Music was founded by G Augustus Holmes in 1887. The College actually began as an examining body, but a teaching element was then created early in it's history. The LCM awarding body is the University of West London and this is the literature which explains the history, syllabus and accreditations.

The size of the brochure is 210x210mm, square, saddle stitched and features a 4pp cover printed on Omnia 280gsm with an 8pp text printed on Omnia 150gsm.
Omnia was chosen because it would work with the rich detail that is present in the images but that would still give a natural look and tactile feel. As you can see from images, some of the photography is quite dark, but there is no loss of detail, which is what can often happen printing on an ordinary uncoated paper.

Printed offset Litho throughout plus a dark grey special.
Printing is by Dayfold, who are based in Dorset, with David Crompton handling the project. Dayfold have made a superb job of it - colour reproduction and solids are excellent.
