Nothing is Permanent

Cross-disciplinary designer and printmaker, Paul Wolterink works across a range of media, believing "Anything can function as a carrier for information". From his roots as graphic designer, Wolterink's design vision is based on rapid instinctive 'design intuition' resulting in strong communication and simple visual language, that quickly burns on the retina - which is certainly true with this bright fluorescent print!

In Paul's own words: "Small edition re-print no. 2, in a new colour combination, of my ode to the classic marker pen series and, also, as a tribute to one of my favourite mottos 'Nothing is Permanent'. Useful in a headwind, but also in a tailwind. This Blue & Fluorescent orange version comes in an edition of 50 prints only".
Paul Wolterink finished screen printing this new colour way reprint a day before 14 days isolation. The size is 230x500mm and is hand silkscreen printed on our Matrisse 200gsm, signed and numbered
as you can see below...
Below image shows the screen...

ARKET Launch

ARKET is a modern-day market offering essential products for men, women, children and the home. ARKET’s mission is to democratise quality through widely accessible, well-made, durable products, designed to be used and loved for a long time. ARKET opened its first store on Regent Street, London in August 2017 and this is the launch invitation...
Size of the invitation is 148x105mm, which is concertina folded out to a finished size of 592x420mm. Below is a birds eye view...
The invitation is printed offset litho on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm ...and it looks and feels absolutely superb - it flops and folds in a delightful way when handling as I hope these images demonstrate. The above image shows the way it concertina's from top to bottom.
First fold, which concertina's out to 148x420mm
Fully unfolded to form a 32pp broadsheet...
The invitation is printed in just black, offset litho on one side only, although you might just be able to see ARKET as a shadow in the top quarter, which I hope you will be able to see better in the pictures below...
It is a very subtle effect, so how is it created? …the white letters are silkscreen printed by K2 Screen. Mathias Clottu worked with Mark Jenkins at K2 to create a bespoke white colour to match the tone of Offenbach Bible -  a pure white silkscreen would have been too visible. The below image shows the silkscreened reverse.
The below image shows how it looks with light behind it, although it was the subtlety of the matching white shade that was required and which works so beautifully on the finished piece...
Design is by Mathias Clottu Studio. Litho printing is by Xtraprint, silkscreen is by K2 Screen and it was concertina folded by ABS Finishers.

Harvey Lloyd - new prints, new shop...

Harvey Lloyd Screenprint is a silkscreen print studio based in the South East of England and their work has appeared on this blog many times over the years. Established 40 years ago, they produce work for some of the best names in the industry, Anthony Burrill, Mr Bingo, Spin Design, Pentagram, Tom Pigeon, Morag Myerscough, Adrian Johnson to name a few. Harvey Lloyd have gained a reputation for having artists at their studio (often with film crews) and working together to produce their images. By working interactively, they find different techniques which are developed collaboratively.

...and now, for the first time, Harvey Lloyd Screenprint have produced a series of their own prints:
Bale (pictured above and below) is produced in 3 colour ways - Fluorescent Pink, Green and yellow. The finished size is 600mm x 600mm.
The series Connect, Metropolis and Pyramid are all 400mm square
Connect
Metropolis
Pyramid
Spheres and Weave are A2 size and printed using 3 colours using an unusual technique- getting away from digital technology and back to analogue, a technique which Steve Fachiri and Tracey Day at Harvey Lloyd don't want to reveal, save telling me that the screens were created using torn paper for the stencils.
Spheres
Weave
...and of course I should have mentioned that they are all printed on our wonderful Matrisse 250gsm, which is an uncoated, white board range with a high bulk (330microns) is FSC certified and Acid Free.

These beautiful prints are available directly from their online shop here:

Basic Pleasure Model

This is a new book from photographer Rick Pushinsky, which is actually being launched this week - he'll be giving a short talk this Saturday about the book at the Unseen Book Market in Amsterdam, which is the event for self published books.

The size of the book is 320x240mm, portrait and the cover is produced on our SUMO, black 3mm thick. It is silkscreened in white and the image is printed on paper which is mounted into a debossed panel on the front cover.

Back cover...
The finishing requires a special mention. It has an "open" section sewn binding. This is where the book is finished as a conventional section sewn block but glue is applied without the "text block" being placed into a cover. Some people call this "Coptic binding" but I'm not sure that is really the correct term. It works brilliantly with the Sumo, heavy board
Design is Bernd Grether. Printing is by Kopa in Lithuania.

Notey or Nice?

Studio Small are a London based studio, specialising in the fashion, design and luxury sectors. Every year they produce a Christmas card, but rather than just producing a a clever card, they always produce something a little unusual and hopefully useful. This last Christmas it was this lovely notepad...
The pad is A5, size and includes 80 plain leaves (160pp) on which to write.
The cover of the pad is simply silkscreened in three colours (white ink and two fluorescents) on our Colorset, Bright Red 350gsm. The front is pictured above on the left. On the back of the pad is printed the Christmas greeting.
The pad is glued at the top - the term for this is 'glued at the head'. The text pages are using our Redeem 100% Recycled 60gsm.
The pad is bound using "Padding Glue", so the sheets can be torn off easily. The image below shows the glued head and the perfectly creased spine...
Binding is by Wayte Binding who are based in Tunbridge Wells.
Design is by Darcy Ward at Studio Small. The covers have been beautifully printed by Harvey Lloyd Screenprint, who are based in Wadhurst, East Sussex. It is worth having a look at their website for some of the great work they do for the likes of Anthony Burrill and Mr Bingo.

Jo Malone Notebook

Jo Malone is a London based company renowned for British bespoke fragrances for Women, Men and the Home. The brand is renowned for it's products being immaculately wrapped in a signature cream box with black corners - packaging which defines quality and an understated style. With these values in place, it's unsurprising that the company's literature is of equal quality ...but what shows how deep the ethos of quality runs, this is a notebook produced for internal use and visitors.

The books are A5 (210x148mm) portrait, they have a 4pp cover using our new Blackgold 290gsm which is a new range of black papers which is a super intense, deep black, produced without the use of Carbon Black pigment.

The cover is simply (but beautifully) silkscreen printed in one colour, which is their signature cream colour.

The 32pp text just has lines printed using offset litho and is printed on our Neptune Unique SoftWhite 120gsm, which is a paper that Jo Malone has used for many years

The book is simply saddle stitched with two wires...
The notebook has been beautifully produced by Mayfield Press who are based in Oxford.

Tom Pigeon is a creative studio founded by Pete and Kirsty Thomas in 2014. They met and started working as designers in the early 1990’s and since then have worked across design disciplines. As Tom Pigeon they design simple things for people to enjoy including prints, jewellery and stationery.

This is a print, titled 'Build' that they have designed for Social Bite Village - a development in Edinburgh which gives homeless people somewhere to live and all the support they need to get back to work and into long-term accommodation.

Carpenters Wharf

Just the cover makes the difference!
I've written on this blog about many projects where the cover "makes the difference" and this is just one of those projects. Carpenters Wharf is a canalside development by the Anderson Group in Hackney Wick and this is the sales brochure.

The cover is printed on our Colorset (100% Recycled) board in the Nero (black) shade in 350gsm. The cover is silkscreened in opaque white on the outside and inside covers:
 Detail of the silkscreen:
The below image shows the inside spread. The 60pp text is on a combination of coated and uncoated paper.
Another really lovely feature is the three hole sewing using white thread...
Design is by Jack Renwick Studio. Print and lovely finishing is by Gavin Martin Colournet.
