The Big Book Bonanza Catalogue

This is the  'The Big Book Bonanza' catalogue which showcases the new Autumn releases from HarperCollins publishers. Throughout the publication are the same wonderful psychedelic Kaleidoscope style illustrations as on the invitations to the launch event (see previous post) by Emily Forgot.
Size of the catalogue is 210mm square, saddle stitched. It is printed on our Omnia - 4pp cover on 320gsm and 32pp text on 150gsm.

The choice of material for this job was important, the reason being that the strong illustrations on the divider pages meant that it had to print solids really well but there's also lots of great commissioned photography included, so it was important to have a material which worked for both without compromising either and as I hope these pictures show, it looks really good.

The other very good reason that Omnia was chosen was the use of metallic gold pantone 'special' ink. On most traditional uncoated papers, metallics can look flat and with gold can just look a bit brown, but as I hope the below image demonstrates, metallic gold really does look metallic on Omnia.
Design and art direction is by Zoë Bather.

The catalogues are printed offset litho in four colour process plus metallic gold special. Print production was handled by Alan Mountain at Forward Print (sales@forward-print.com)

The Big Book Bonanza

This is the invitation to the showcase of new books from Harper Collins. Billed as 'The Big Book Bonanza' the function was held at the Crimson Bar at The Soho Hotel in May.
The invitation has a fantastic illustration by Emily Forgot, which is like a psychedelic kaleidoscope - great illustration and a really strong image.

The invitation is 180mm square and rather than being printed in CMYK, it is printed using black plus 3 pantone colours - fluoro orange, blue and metallic gold.
The material chosen is our Omnia, which works especially well with metallic inks, as they actually look metallic! and the solid fluoro colours jump out, but still with an uncoated, tactile feel.
As the invitation is just a single card, it is duplexed (2x320gsm) to make 640gsm. You can see the thickness in the image below.
Design and art direction is by Zoë Bather.

The invitations are printed offset litho in four colours as described above. Print and production was handled by Alan Mountain at Forward Print (sales@forward-print.com)

Size | Format | Stock - 2015 edition

The latest, revised, edition of Size|Format|Stock is now available. Size Format Stock is the booklet that I wrote in collaboration with Zoë Bather at Studio8. Originally written in mind for the students that I give occasional talks to, it has since become a firm favourite with many graphic designers.
This is now it's fourth printing and I've printed and distributed over 25,000 copies! ..through colleges, by post and also through Eye Magazine.
The booklet is A5 portrait saddle stitched with a 4pp cover on Colorset 120gsm and a 16pp text printed on Offenbach Bible 60gsm.
If you would like a copy, drop me an email and I'll pop one in the post.

Jobs from the past - Number 60

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by...

Quartet: 27.01.06
This is a stunning piece of literature produced for an event at the museum back in 2006.  Quartet: Four Literary Walks Through The V&A Quartet contains commissioned short stories by Nicholas Royle, Lucy Caldwell, Peter Hobbs and Shiromi Pinto.
Inspired by the V&A and its collections, the four stories in ‘Quartet’ were annotated with directions, mapping the routes described in the writers’ narratives and thus enabling readers to follow the stories as they moved through the museum.
Size of the publication is 307x255mm, portrait. It is totally unbound, just folded and loose, which given the materials just looks and feels right. Matt and Zoë, who were the designers on the project wanted an interaction between the pages which ties in the words with the layout and different floor levels in the museum. They wanted a lightweight material and a high amount of show-through which of course is NOT what our Offenbach Bible does - it has the most amazing opacity for such a lightweight sheet of paper. I suggest the use of a 'high density' black ink or what is soemtimes termed 'double density black' - this is normal ink, except it just has a higher percentage of pigment (colour) so results in a deeper black - thereby ensuring maximum show through - and a nice solid black as well! The picture below shows the way the design and type was structured to work through the paper.
The 4pp cover is printed on StarFine Natural White 200gsm, which is a good match to the shade of the Offenbach Bible. The text is all printed on Offenbach Bible 60gsm.
Below you can see the schematic which links the stories and their position in the museum.
Detail of the schematics:
The routes were also made available as downloads for Sony PlayStation Portable consoles as the show was upported by Sony Playstation
You can read more about the project here:

Design is by Studio8 where the Creative Directors were Zoë Bather and Matt Willey. Sadly, Studio8 closed in May 2012 and Matt and Zoë now work on their own projects, many of which have also appeared on this blog. This piece of work was awarded both Type Directors Club (TDC53), 2007 Citation for Typographic Excellence and an ADC 86, 2007 Merit (Corporate & Promotional Design)

This piece was printed in two colours, offset litho, by Principal Colour.

Big Book Parade Catalogue

This is the  'The Big Book Parade' catalogue which showcases the new books from HarperCollins publishers, in the Autumn. Throughout the publication are the same illustrations as on the invitations to the launch event (see previous post) by Brett Ryder (Heart Agency) commissioned to reflect the wide and diverse range of titles 'on parade' at the event and in the catalogue.

The size of the catalogue is 297 x 165mm, portrait and is saddle stitched. The 4pp cover is on our Modigliani Candido 260gsm, which has a "feltmark" texture similar to that of a watercolour paper which works brilliantly with Brett's illustrations. The 32pp text is on our Neptune Unique FSC 135gsm, which is a smooth uncoated with a dazzlingly white shade and the illustrations have reproduced fantastically.

The choice of material for the text of this job was important. Typically illustration on a coated paper looks "wrong" (in my opinion and in the opinions of many designers!) However, this publication also had lots of great commissioned photography included, so it was important to have a material which worked for both without compromising either and as I hope these pictures show, it looks great.
Design and art direction is by Zoë Bather.

The catalogues are printed offset litho in four colour process. Print was handled by Alan Mountain at Forward Print (sales@forward-print.com)

The size of the invitation is 145x975mm which concertinas down to 145x195mm. It uses our Modigliani Candido 260gsm, which has a "feltmark" texture similar to that of a watercolour paper which gives it exactly the right feel working with the beautiful illustrations of Brett Ryder (Heart Agency) commissioned to reflect the wide and diverse range of titles 'on parade' at the event.
Design and art direction is by Zoë Bather.

Jobs from the past - Number 46

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and here's one from 2007.

Franklyn Rodgers invitation
Black British photographer Franklyn Rodgers has amassed a body of work both personal and commercial, which is breath-taking in its volume and level of accomplishment. The invitation featured here is both a private view invitation and a promotional piece of literature for his first monograph ‘The Philosophy of Strangers’ published by Autograph ABP.

These incredible images simply draw you into the detail of each person and make no mistake, these are beautifully reproduced prints (there is another one in the series but unfortunately I don't have an image for it. although it is equally stunning).

The unfolded size of the invitation is A2 (594x420mm), folding down to A6 (148x105mm). As the invitation is unfolded, the information is revealed.  The photographic print is printed on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm, printed offset litho in four colour process. The reproduction is simply stunning.

Design is by Studio8. Creative Directors were Zoë Bather and Matt Willey. Print production is by Principal Colour and they really are an amazing example of what can be achieved on this paper.

Jobs from the past - Number 36

Followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and here's one from 2004.

National Portrait Gallery - Off the Beaten Track 2004

This is the invitation to the Press View for the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery called Off the Beaten Track, celebrating three centuries of women travellers in portraits. Journeying to distant parts of the world from the 1660s to the 1960s, before the age of mass travel, these women had experiences and encounters almost unthinkable today. The exhibition brought together 60 portraits from the National Portrait Gallery's collections, alongside souvenirs, photographs and paintings made by the women on their travels.

This 'passport style' invitation is 90x125mm, portrait and is saddle stitched with black staples (very nice) and also features round corners. It has a 4pp cover on Colorset Nero 270gsm with a 4pp text on Redeem 100% Recycled 130gsm. The cover is hot foil blocked with a matt white foil & blind embossing and the text is printed in four colour process.
Above: centre spread
Detail showing the printed 'intaglio' pattern. Redeem was chosen as it has a neutral white shade with an aged look and feel.
The reply card printed on Redeem 100% Recycled 240gsm and then rubber stamped by hand.

This beautifully conceived and produced invitation was by Frost Design, London. Creative directors on the project were Matt Willey and Zoë Bather. Designer was Laura Hains. The excellent foiling, print and finishing was by Matthew Glover at Orchid.
